La délinquance comme forme d'art. « Alors mon but sera atteint.

I took a long weekend trip to Riga in September 2005 - what a very nice city. I was expecting Communist gray but it was a very modern city with a really nice old town. Good walking city - and a lot of Jugendstil (German Art-Nouveau designed) buildings everwhere. Excellent food and beer too; lots of pretty women but no photo shoots - bummer!

This wonderful concoction of Art Nouveau fretwork and terracotta tiles appear on a grand Edwardian villa in a leafy tree lined street of the Melbourne suburb of Elwood. Almost enclosed by a frothy "frou-frou" of white painted wooden fretwork, the verandah looks like the perfect place for an Edwardian family to sit and take tea. It is the most perfectly intact example of fretwork on a verandah that I have ever seen in Melbourne. It is also one of the more ornate ones that I have seen. I love the circular pattern that keeps reoccuring in the fretwork, particularly the two large circles that frame the Art Nouveau front windows. Built around the turn of the Twentieth Century, the house has been built in theQueen Anne style, which was mostly a residential style inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement in England, but also encompassed some of the more stylised elements of Art Nouveau, which gave it an more decorative look. Queen Anne style was most popular around the time of Federation. With complex roofline structures and undulating facades, many Queen Anne houses fell out of fashion at the beginning of the modern era, and were demolished.
