Engage little artists in a project-based study of Piet Mondrian, lines and primary colors in this introductory unit of the Famous Artist series. Inside the unit you'll find a 19-page unit guide full of information and tips for teaching this series of art lessons to students in preschool through grade 2. The unit is broken down into three 40-minute sessions. For each session there is a guided presentation that has already been prepared for you and can be used via Google Slides or PowerPoint. The presentation also introduces and guides you through completion of a studio project and follow-up activity. The 66-page combined PDF and Google Slides full resource includes: An original digital storybook designed to expose students to famous artworks and details about Piet Mondrian A digital step-by-step studio project guide with clear directions, supply lists, and work sample photos A printable studio project follow-up activity A printable early finisher activity A digital lesson overview A printable self-assessment SUPPLIES White construction paper Red construction paper Yellow construction paper Blue construction paper School glue Scissors Cotton Swabs Pencil MORE ABOUT THE FAMOUS ARTIST SERIES FROM KIDS ART PROJECTS 101 This series is a project-based approach with ties to famous art and artists. The projects are designed for use with young children, and they heavily emphasize play and experimentation, but they also target specific skills, techniques, and understandings. Inside each structured unit the plans are organized into three to four 40-minute sessions and can be paced out in whatever way works best for your situation. This approach is awesome because it layers art history connections with guided instruction about the elements of art and principles of design. Each unit ultimately results in a completed art project. These projects were originally developed for use in a public school art room with kindergarten students, but have been adapted into a scripted PowerPoint format so that they can be easily utilized in a variety of settings and with a slightly broader age-range. WHY? Most school-age kids are ready to learn about famous art and artists! Such engagement exposes them to diverse pathways to success and creative expression. The problem is that figuring out HOW TO DO THIS WELL WITH YOUNG KIDS can be time-consuming and overwhelming. Teacher trainings, even well-organized ones, can leave you feeling ill-equipped for: Selecting kid-friendly masterpieces Translating art/artist facts in a way that feels accessible and engaging to little ears Making time for art history integration, in what is usually a very short time-allotment for hands-on artmaking Assembling supplemental resources (videos, stories, assessments, and early-finisher activities) Aligning famous art with hands-on projects Breaking hands-on projects into manageable and concise kid-friendly chunks The project packs in our Famous Artist Series do all that work for you! This resource will have you feeling more relaxed, prepared, and purposeful about engaging young kids in art learning! >>Click here to see all of the existing units in the Famous Artist Series Not sure where to start? This is a challenging 5th grade Pop Art project for art teachers wanting to infuse literacy into their art lessons. These are still a work in progress...but I am already loving them so I wanted to post what I had so far! We began our project with the book LMNO Peas by Keith Baker. It is a fun alphabet book about these tiny green peas that show action. It is a great book for talking about action verbs and having students come up with verbs that would go with each alphabet letter. I had mine try and predict what action the peas would be doing as I turned each page. By the end of the book they were getting much better with developing their action verbs! One of my friends that teaches Kindergarten had given me these great alphabet stamps that she had purchased from Lakeshore. They are jumbo and perfect for little hands. So, naturally, printmaking came to mind and who better to go along with the alphabet book than the king of printmaking....JASPER JOHNS! So we did an artist study on Johns and I displayed several copies of various art pieces in the room. Then my 2nd and 3rd graders completed an art writing piece about Johns where they reflected on interesting or intriguing aspects of his work and stated some facts that they had learned about Johns. They glued these writings to the back of their finished art work (I decided if they actually keep their artwork then they will always have the background information on Jasper johns. We did print making with the alphabet stamps in cool colors then we painted around the letters with warm colors. I love them! My K-1st graders completed a slip with the photo of the cover of the book printed on it and the statement “___ is for ___”. I had them put their first initial and their first name in the blanks. This week they are finishing by using green paper and cutting out small peas and giving them faces to glue on their piece. Here is a short power point on JJ: http://www.authorstream.com/Presentation/huskeyj72501-1347957-jasper-johns/

There was also art on boards throughout the school. 2 grade penguin display! Got many complements! Love this shot of the kiddos pointing out their work! I decided to turn a storage room off of the gym into a "Keller Cave." The lights were out in there so students had to use a flash light to go in and look at the cave paintings. The music teacher also made a CD with cave like music to play in the cave. It was a HUGE hit! The families loved it! Inside the cave (the flash from the camera makes it look pretty bright in there). We even hung a spider for an extra touch! I had simple art projects for the kids to make. Here I am shrinking their shrink-y-dink necklaces. Kids love watching them shrink right before their eyes!
