A blog about how a failed painting made me rethink the theories of composition in my painting of Donegal, Ireland.
This week 4th grade is starting their Robin Mead inspired landscapes! She's a contemporary artist from Georgia, and you can check out her work on her website here! I was also inspired by the awesome art teacher, Lauralee Chambers, from her beautiful student examples on Instagram! Here's Robin Mead's Instagram too :) She has a Youtube channel too! Here's how we created ours! Materials: Sax 90 lb paper pencils Sharpies Crayola artista II watercolor Big Kid's Choice Paintbrushes Robin Mead examples Day 1: Show examples of Robin Mead's work, and show examples of other 4th grade work from Lauralee Chamber's art room. Then I demonstrated how to add the water, ground, mountains, and sun. After I drew it out, I traced it with Sharpie, and let them get to work. When enough had drawn and traced, I demonstrated how to blend their watercolors in a way similar to Mead's work. They did a great job, and enjoyed creating their own landscapes! Here's some examples of Robin's work! It's so beautiful and colorful!! Here's a video, showing how to draw a Robin Mead inspired landscape! Here's some great student examples on day 1 of instruction! here's Mrs. Braswell's class, working hard on theirs! Here's Mrs. Torres' class, finishing up! Just beautiful!! Happy New Year! Despite the long pause in postings, I did actually complete a few more sewing projects in 2014. January 2014 - Drawstring book bags for Allie and Cate's birthdays February 2014 - Robert Hughes baby quilt (I really need to consider taking a "how to photograph your quilts" workshop:) quilted with stars and spirals May 2014 - Amy Becker's HS graduation lap quilt Amy picked out fabrics at Fabric Depot during her Portland visit, Christmas 2013. I supplemented with a few fabrics I found at The Stitching Post and at Kapaia Stitchery during a trip to Kauai (always looking for an excuse to fabric shop). The blue batik with butterflies was the first fabric Amy chose. Other colors were built around that. quilted with vining flowers and leaves Now Amy has this nice warm lap quilt - perfect for her college years at the University of Arizona in Tucson. She assures me that it does get cold there, especially when the air conditioner is running. November 2014 - New curtains and duvet set for the Sisters house After 20 years, Stefanie and I decided it was time for a change in the upstairs bedroom in our Sisters house. We found some curtain fabric at IKEA (seen below in the medium-sized pillows). After a futile search for a coordinating duvet cover I decided we just needed to make our own. Not as cheap, but so much more fun! On the bed in Anna's old room at our house (tempted to keep it here, but...) Had to add a border piece as it was just a bit too small. Found a fun coordinating fabric at The Stitching' Post. Shams and throw pillows. The quilting in the shams mimics the print in the curtain fabric. All set up in its new home. On to 2015... January 2015 - Jeanne's lap quilt This quilt was made for my good friend and fellow swimmer, Jeanne. She will be out of the water for a bit, recuperating from surgery, so of course this called for a quilt! My daughter, Anna, suggested the colors - perfect for a swimmer. Another swimmer friend, Jenn, joined me for a shopping trip to Fabric Depot and also helped with part of the sewing. Sandi and Jeanne The design incorporates over 60 small blocks with names of some of Jeanne's friends. Next Up???? cityscape art quilt based on a photo of Roussillon, France art quilt based on our Croatia travels last September flower/plant themed art quilt for the Hardy Plant Society Hortlandia Plant Sale in April hopefully taking Hilde Morin's Bowl Art class

Thank goodness we live in an age where we can get inspiration from teachers all over the world! Most art teachers are alone in their building, so we do not have the opportunity to collaborate with our peers as much as the other teachers do. I'm so blessed to live in an age where an art teacher clear across the country or world is accessible in mere seconds! We can all share our great ideas, and not have to leave the comfort of our pj's if we don't want to! Anyway.... As I was scrolling through Instagram, I came across this beautiful project from Art with Mrs. E. Her 4th graders did such a great job, I wanted to try it out with ours as well! We will be starting this when we come back from Christmas break! I love this technique of spreading chalk to create the look of the Northern Lights. Here's how I did it. Materials: Sargent Art chalk pastels Crayola White oil pastel Crayola Artista II white paint 9x12" Tru-Ray construction paper Sax 90 lb paper First start with black paper, and a piece of 90lb white paper. Tear that 90lb piece of paper 3 or 4 different ways horizontally. Then, use chalk pastels to add color to the top of the tear. Rub in an upward motion to spread the chalk onto the black paper. Oh, and add a thick white line in chalk for the snowy ground! Add more color than I did in this picture! I realized I didn't add enough when I starting spreading it, and not much color was coming off! Here's a new video showing how to color and spread the chalk onto your black paper For some reason the warm colors spread and colored better than the cool did. I did 4 layers, but you could do more or less, or even do them going in a different direction! Maybe vertical instead of horizontal! I'll try that next! The next class the students can add paint to their picture, by painting black evergreen trees, their reflection in the water, and stars or snow in the background. Now that I've completed mine, I'll do the stars before I do the trees next time! Whoops! Guess my trees will just have snow on them! When I instruct the students to do the stars, we will rub the bristles with our fingers to create the stars, so our paint dots are much smaller! After they paint the black trees, add the reflection of the lights with chalk to the water, in a horizontal motion. Then, add the reflection of the trees in a horizontal motion with black tempera paint. Stay tuned for some awesome art! Hope you and yours have the happiest of holidays, and a wonderful New Year! Last week we had a 1-2 hour delay, each day, so I haven't had 4th grade until today! Mrs. Fambrough's class is off to a wonderful start, and as usual, Mrs. Stacey is so very proud of them!! Dr. Fambrough's class did a great job today, too! “Lauren Stacey is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com.”

Through a luxuriant series of embroideries, Litli Ulfur translates thick landscapes into lush entanglements of brown and green stitches. The abstract forms consider the intricacies of nature through an aerial perspective, contrasting micro- and macro-views in every inch. Each piece is created organically and uniquely, ensuring no two are alike. The textured works are inspired by natural sources, like jungly forests and the human nervous system, that are reflected through French knots, tufts, and flat patches. More

As a drawing teacher for years, I've found that these six worksheets are at the core of what all students must know to tackle landscape drawing. They are always introduced to my own art students at the beginning of any landscape drawing unit and these techniques and terminology follow them throughout the unit. Take it from a seasoned drawing teacher...these six worksheets are essential and game-changing. These would work well for all students from upper elementary through high school and beyond. Your students will learn to draw basic landscape elements such as tress, rocks, clouds, grass, and mountains. They will also learn how to draw 18 unique landscape compositions which are all constructed with a minimum number of lines. There are two line-only worksheets, and two corresponding shaded worksheets which are dedicated to considering the direction of the light source and shadows. A blank sheet (empty boxes) is also provided for the students to copy these examples and/or explore creating their own landscape compositions utilizing the foreground, middle ground, and background concept seen here. I trust your students will find these as beneficial and enlightening as mine do. Enjoy! (Bo, The Art Guru) *** If you like this smaller grouping of worksheets then you may opt to purchase my larger offering: "50 Needed Worksheets for Art Students and Art Teachers". There you'll find these six worksheets as well as other worksheets covering topics such as perspective drawing, drawing landscapes, how to draw backgrounds, tests and quizzes, the elements and principles of design, color theory and so much more.

To my eye, these little colorful compositions are landscapes... and I'm working on building harmony and balance. Even on a tiny 3x3" card there are an abundance of variables to work with! So I work very quickly, not analyzing, making snap decisions.
