Let me start out by saying this has been one of the most successful and visually stunning projects that I've ever done with my students. It is definitely the most exciting printmaking project that we've ever done at Thomas. I wrote the lesson and went into the project thinking that it would probably be pretty good. I told my students that I'm absolutely blown away by the results of their talent and hard work. This lesson is a keeper. My previous 4th grade printmaking lesson was decent, but not outstanding. It was too similar from an art-making perspective to the Wild Things I do with my 2nd graders. This year, I really wanted to push the medium a little more by printing with multiple colors. I ended up deciding to push it to three colors and add in a little vocab by also bringing in the use of complimentary colors. Check out the lesson plan here! Close up of the piece above. Wow. Whew. That was a lot of examples, right? I just couldn't help myself this time. They were all so good that I had to show them off. If you're still reading, you're in luck. I'm going to tell you how I did this project and I'm going to use pictures! Let your inner kid rejoice. Start with a drawing of whatever you want to print. I had my kids do animal portraits. I gave them each a piece of the foam they would be printing on, then had them trace around it to give them the size of the final artwork. I then collected the foam for use the following week. Tape your drawing over the printing foam and use a dull pencil or other blunt tool to press down on the lines of just the outline of the subject. Take the paper off and press down again to make sure the marks are deep enough to make proper prints. I had my students make sure they ended up with three good prints of the background on the first day of printing. Re-tape the original drawing the following class. Press down any remaining details. Cut out the subject along the line that was pressed down last time. Now print with this piece directly on top of the original prints. I had my students use at least one set of complimentary colors. On the final day of printing, cut out a small detail that makes sense to print in a third color. Then, you guessed it, print this piece right on top of the original prints. This was my demo piece I did with the materials above.

My theme this year is "Art Rocks" so in order to go along with my theme we created guitars to go along with our study of the color wheel. 2nd and 3rd grade drew guitars and had to color them with oil pastels and illustrate the primary, secondary, and intermediate colors mixing together. After studying the color wheel for a few weeks we did a color mixing excercise using oil pastels to blend analogus colors from red down the color wheel all the way to red-violet. Then we looked at electric guitars and talked about the different parts and shapes When they started their drawings I told them to make the neck of the guitar stop in the middle of the paper so their guitars would fit on the paper. Then I showed them how to make two different body shapes, but they could choose their own body shape or make up their own. We looked at a real electric guitar and talked about how you can only see one edge at a time from any point of veiw and how to draw the edge so it looks 3D Then they colored them with oil pastel and drew shapes in the background such as stars and music notes Second graders splatter painted their backgrounds with neon paint Third graders created a background by paper weaving and some of them splatter painted too if they finished early We used 3D O's to stick the stars on so they would pop up off the paper and add a 3D element to the finished product. I also let a few classes add rainbow colored yarn to the strings if they finished early

This is a very interesting and rare Beta 21 driven Piaget with a slight discolored dial; the watch turned from a soleil finished grey colour to a slight lilac hue! The indexes are also very unusual, they are “flat” but still three dimensional, very cool! Another strange and seldom seen feature is the way the hands assembled on the movement by means of a jewel! It’s not only interesting on the outside however; the watch houses a Beta 21 movement. In the early 60s, a number of prominent brands collaborated on the development of what became known the Beta 21 movement at the Centre Electronique Horologer (CEH). By the end of the 1960s approximately 6000 Beta 21 movements had been made, each virtually identical (except a few minor modifications on a brand by brand basis) and they were put into production. Patek used it in their Cercle d’Or, Omega in their Electroquartz pieces and Rolex in the 5100. I first saw this picture floating around Pinterest- I have since found out it is from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams. It is called "A Tribute to Music" and costs a pretty penny - $2000! I loved it the moment I saw it (not so much the price though). Well with the help of the copy lady at Staples - we figured out a way to create something similar! Here is my version: First you will need two 8.5x11 sheets of music (you can print some off the computer or use a copy out of a music book). Next I cut and pieced the two sheets together so that they created a new 8.5x11 with a horizontal orientation (I wanted my final artwork to be wider than it is long). If you want your final artwork to have a vertical orientation than you can skip this step! Next I had staples copy the music sheet onto 3 transparencies. By layering the transparencies on top of each other you get a jumbled mess of notes! Each layer should be shifted slightly down so that you can see the notes of each layer. Staples can then take these 3 layered transparencies and copy it onto one sheet of paper. Mine ended up being 11x11. Finally that was blown up to be 36x36. Staples can only blow up your image to be 36" tall - it can be as long as you want though. Since my image started out square, a 36x36 square was the biggest it would go. At this point you could frame the image or mod podge it to canvas. Hobby Lobby sells a canvas that is 36x36 but when we tried that size in my hallway we decided it needed to be bigger. So I found a 36x48 canvas at Michaels. The full price was $80 so make sure to use a 40 or 50% off coupon when you buy these! For an even cheaper DIY you could also find a large piece of artwork on canvas at a thrift store and mod podge the music over the top! ***UPDATE you could also attach the paper to a piece of 1/2 inch plywood rather than a canvas. You can have Home Depot or Lowes cut it to the size you need and it should only cost around $20. Simply attach corner molding to the edges to give the artwork a finished look as seen here at Maison de Pax. To fill my larger canvas I went to Staples and had them print me out another 36x36 sheet of music so I could piece the two sheets together on my canvas. It worked great - because it is a jumble of notes you really can't see where I pieced it together. I made sure my papers were lined up properly then folded them back halfway- brushed the mod podge on the canvas- then laid the paper back down, then folded up the other half and mod podged that side. Once all the pieces are glued to the canvas let it dry for about 30 min. then apply a layer of mod podge on top of the whole thing. Once that is dry you can leave it "as is" or distress it with some sandpaper, glaze, paint, or coffee. I simply used a couple of damp paper towels dipped in glaze and paint and just dab and wipe on different colors in different areas. There really isn't a "technical" way to do this. I also used the paper towels on the sides of the canvas so the sides matched the tone of the front. And that's it! Final Price: $50 for the canvas, and $13 spent at staples for the transparencies and two large 36x36 prints. Not bad! ***UPDATE: One of my readers made a .jpg file that you can use to create this artwork! Just click on the image below to make it larger, then you can save it to your own computer.
Here's a great idea I spotted on Pinterest.... I tried this lesson with my middle school students and they had so much fun with it! I originally used a copy machine to enlarge students' fingerprints. It was cumbersome and time-consuming. But then I figured out a faster, easier, and better way! For detailed instructions with photos, tips, writing prompts, a student gallery, and fascinating fingerprint facts, check out my fun resource on TPT! My pdf also comes with 3 ready-to-use fingerprint enlargements in case you don't have time to take students' actual fingerprints. This can also be helpful for students who arrive late or miss the first day when you work on these. Optional... use colored pencils to lightly add some designs in the background before tracing over your writing with Sharpie. This will personalize your self-portrait even more!

IF you are like me, you are looking for FUN, yet simple projects for the end of the school year!! I got this idea from this fabulous blog called The Lost Sock I found these great videos to show the students before they get started! Bubbles from baris parildar on Vimeo. First we talked about the properties of bubbles. I blew some bubbles for the kids to look at (with their hands in their laps...pure torture) but I really wanted them to use their eyes. What shape is the shiney? Where is the light source? For example a window will make a window shaped shiney! What color are the bubbles and why do they start as a clear liquid and then turn rainbowy? 1 First students traced as many different circle shaped objects I could fine!! 2 They added at least two shineys to each bubble 3 Then colored the bubbles using oil pastels, and making sure to leave at least part of the bubble black to make it look transparent So, first the students started drawing bubbles individually... Then, one student suggested that they put their papers together and connect their bubbles. Within a few minutes, I had an entire class on the floor connecting EVERY one of their papers to make a huge bubble mural! They were SO excited and I loved the conversations I heard as they ALL worked together as one giant group!! The end product was a masterpiece and the kids were SO excited!! Some classes drew bubbles together to form words. You can see the words " Pie is Good" at the top of this class' Art! The great thing about this project is that its fun for ALL ages! My four year old (below) drew her own bubble artwork (all by herself) and included herself blowing the bubbles in the bottom corner! She had fun searching for circles in the kitchen. There are Tabasco bottle circles, and salt shaker circles, coffee can lid circles, a soda can circle! So get out your oil pastels and go create some Bubble ART to kick off the SUMMER!!!! The great thing about bubbles is that they are inexpensive and fun no matter what age you are! My daughter got a bubble blower last summer that blew small bubbles inside large bubbles! We took this picture last August!

I found this very cool art piece from Dilly-Dali Art. They sprayed their hands with white paint onto black paper and it looked awesome! So I tried that with my kids today. Although I loved the look of having a bunch of hands on one big sheet of paper, I also wanted each of them to have their own to take home. So I put white paint in a spray bottle and added a little water. Then the kids took turns spraying each other's hands on black paper. When they took their hands away, they loved what was left behind (not to mention how cool their splattered arms and hands looked!). I put them up really close together so it looked like one big art piece. My only disappointment with this is that I think I added too much water. Or maybe construction paper absorbs too much. I just wish the white was whiter, you know? But it still looks cool!

Hunky Dory is a two-colour brioche knit with a very sloppy fit and fabulous voluminous sleeves. It’s knitted from the top down in the round and comes in sizes S through to XXL. It’s knitted on 12mm needles so although it sounds as though it could be a heavy knit it’s actually incredibly light and squishy. The pattern includes videos on how to set up the brioche, the brioche increases and decreases (at the cuff). If you’ve never done two colour brioche before, it really isn’t difficult and you can certainly give it a first go with this jumper but it’s probably not for a total beginner! The jumper is a very loose fit. We’d really recommend checking out the different size measurements if you want a closer fitting garment or are considering sizing up.
