5th grade is finishing up their Chinese New Year kites, so it's time for a new project! I thought we'd go in a more 3-d direction, and create some origami dragon eyes! The kids LOVE origami, and these aren't too complicated to do! I was cruising Pinterest, and found Krokotek's blog about creating origami eyes, and thought I'd try it too. & Sabrina Wingren, with A Space to Create Art, has this project for sale in her TPT store, if you'd like to purchase additional details of this project. There are also dozens of youtube videos, showing how to make similar reptile/dragon eyes, if my videos aren't sufficient. :) Here's how we made them and a sample of my students' work! Here's a closeup of the eye I colored in the time lapse above. We used oil pastels to color with, and those blend so well! It works a lot better than paint, IMO. I did go ahead and use black and my darkest purple to finish out the corners. We used the Crayola 28 packs to get such a wide array of colors. Here's how to fold one! After you fold your paper, you can start by creating the inner eye part. In my time lapse video, you can see how I layered and blended my oil pastels to create a shaded and shiny looking eye! After you color your inner eye, start on the outer! I chose colors that would blend well, started with the lightest color near the opening, and worked my way out with the darker colors. The yarn God's Eye is a longtime favorite kids camp crafts. It is called God's eye for the Eye of God. In Spanish, Ojo de Dios. It is a weaving usually made with wood and many different colors of yarn.
These spooky mummy eyes are such a fun Halloween project! I saw a version of this project online and just had to recreate it. The oil pastels are a bit messy but this is a no-paint project that can be completed in one art session.
Our first project this year has been a very progressive, multi step, multi media project that has really evolved as we created! Our first project when we got back from hurricane Harvery was to release some stress with scribbling to music.... Students spread out on the floor and scribbled to the sound of fast and slow music by “The Piano Guys” they love these songs because they recognize them from the radio but it’s all instrumental. The students were instructed to use large arm motions that cross over the body. Any motion that crosses from the right side of the body to the left or vise versa uses both hemispheres of the brain since each side controls one side of the body. It is very relaxing and the kids LOVED it!!!!!! The next class kids painted over thier scribbles with water colors, tempera paint, and India ink. They explored the way different paint resists or does not resist the crayon. We try to use all 5 senses for a while brain experience. We talked about abstract art, Kinetic art, And the experience of art. It is a process and not just a product that we create in art. After each experience we gathered on the floor and talked about how they felt in one word. Students said, “Free, alive, happy, exhilarating, dancing, creative, like a real artist, quiet, excited, open,angry, peaceful,etc” When the paintings were finished the students tore them up into strips! They were so upset at first. When they saw the next step they were so excited. The students glued the strips on a late paper for the collage. This took three 50 minute classes. Then students traced the eyes and nose of the animal they wanted and outlines the eyes, nose, and beaks with India ink. ( pictures at the bottom of blog) this is the resin I use. I paint it on with a brush. This resin must be mixed one to one ratio and it is toxic so you must wear a mask. Do NOT let the children use it. You have to do it for them if you want the ultra shiney eyes effect! Wear a mask and use gloves! You can sprinkle glitter in it too for extra FUN!!! Then they glued the eyes and nose on the collage. The next step was to embellish the face and add details. We used India ink and fan brushes to make fur and feathers. When the entire face was finished I added resin to the eyes to make them shine These are how the eyes and noses look before they cut them out. We used the fan brush for making fur. These are the travers they could use for eyes, noses and beaks

Today was day one of week three and man oh man has it been interesting so far (aside from a kindergartener throwing up on my brand new carpet today)! As many of you know I started at a brand new school this year - so I've had to start from scratch with my art program! I'm not sure why I just expected that the county would give me additional money for start up supplies (scissors, rulers, etc.)... cauuuuseee that didn't happen. In fact every art teacher in our county lost $50 each from our consumable budgets! :/ Sooo $400 for 1,200 kids? Awesome. Fortunately for me I have a pretty awesome principal who seems sympathetic to my position. So when day one rolled around and I still didn't have my county money, I had to rely on my own wallet for supplies. I bought some printer paper, crayons, colored pencils, and markers and started brainstorming for lessons. After much thought I landed on 'Creative Letter Drawings' for my 1st graders (a lesson I learned from my supervising teacher during student teaching). I started by reading the book "Louise Loves Art" by Kelly Light. The book is about a little girl who creates her greatest masterpiece (a drawing of her cat) but then her little brother cuts it up and makes it into something else (his greatest masterpiece). Then we talked about the idea of taking something and transforming it into something else. That's when I told my students that I was going to give them a letter of the alphabet and it was their job to turn it into something else (I suggested an animal). After drawing an example on the board, my students got to work! I LOVE LOVE LOVE their creativity!! *Some of these are not yet complete - but I just couldn't wait to post about it! As students finished their artwork.. I gave them the 'Alphabet Challenge.' They got a piece of paper with all the letters of the alphabet on it and were instructed to add a creative drawing to as many letters as they could by the end of class. I got a couple of really cute pieces! :) My teacher's example.
