We have been studying birds for the past month at Art and Soul Preschool, and we plan to continue with more bird exploration, especially as winter comes to an end and spring begins. In our journey so far, we have talked a lot about the noticeable features of birds; beaks, wings, feathers, shapes of the body, different species of birds. Shortly before we began our study, I hung up our viewing bird house. We still haven't found any tenants, but we are hoping that once nesting season really takes off, we will have a family move in. It would be wonderful for the children to be able to watch the eggs hatch and see the baby birds. In their art explorations, the children each chose a bird they wanted to study and do a drawing of. We talked about the shape of the body, the physical attributes of their bird of choice, and then they set to work drawing their birds. I loved how intensely many of the children studied their birds before and as they drew. After they completed their drawings I wanted the children to revisit their drawings again, so I had them take Wiki-Sticks and try and recreate their birds using a line and a sort of sculptural manipulation. I love how they turned out, and the kids really enjoyed the process. The wonderful thing about Wiki-sticks is that the children could place the sticks over their drawings and recreate them, but they are also a pliable wax stick, so with a little pressure they are able to make the lines stick together and hold their shape. I love the crown of feathers on this bird. Later I mounted their drawings along with their wiki-sticks and the original picture of the bird they chose to draw. A close up of a drawing and wiki-stick bird. Because the children loved these birds so much, we had to share them with others and so we put them in the annual Outside the Lines art show. Outside the Lines features artwork from the different schools throughout the county. Each year it is a delight to be a part of this gallery show. Unfortunately, I failed to get a really good picture of the display, but it looked wonderful having all thei mounted bird pictures on the wall. He said "He needs long legs for walking, you can't see them in the picture because they are in the water." A very excited artist who found his artwork at the art show. Some friends who made it to the Art Opening. \ We have also been trying to feed the birds with a group project making a bird feeder, but alas, I think the kids were a little over zealous with their stickers, because the birds seem to be afraid of the feeder. However, just like them, it certainly is cute. They also made bird binoculars during project time, I am looking forward to warmer weather and exploring with these. We will continue to enjoy the birds and life at Art and Soul and do not be surprised if you end up reading more about our winged friends, in future posts.

I am very proud to share my "Birds of a Feather" quilt with you today! With fewer diagonal lines.... Most of the blocks came from my delightful friends in the Mid-Century Modern Bee! I hope I have done justice to their beautiful feathers? I find the quilting part the most stressful.... (Not knowing whether my quilting is good enough or if I have done enough?) I quilted with 40 weight Aurifil in a lovely silvery grey colour (#2615) with lots of randomly spaced straight(ish) diagonal lines... with some 'arrows' echoing the feather points at one end... In this photo you might be able to see the variation in background fabrics I used... and the other... I chose a scrappy orange and turquoise binding.... It finishes at about 60" square. Here's the back with it's siggy blocks... I do have a few more photos to share.... the obligatory 'rolled up' quilt! hanging on a fence... and lounging on a seat! And, by the way, I love it! The past few months my students have been making feathers for a group mural. This idea was inspired by my friend and celebrity in the art community, Cassie Stephens! Head on over to her blog and check out her magical art teacher'n treasures at Cassie Stephen's Blog!! Her original inspo was international street artist, Kelsey Montague. Her inspiring murals challenge people to ask the question "What Lifts you" "What makes your heart Soar?" My students are going to be writing about their passions and inspirations that "lifts" them! I want each student that comes to my art class to feel as though they are walking out with wings on their back, so they can bravely rise up to their dreams with courage and passion! I want them to feel confident in themselves and know that the sky is the limit! First, students painted on watercolor paper with tempera paint using a value gradient of tints and shades using one color plus black on the left and white on the right. They had to blend the colors so thet the different shades did not look like stripes One group did primary and secondary colors red, orange, yellow, green blue, and violet. The next group would paint intermediate colors, red-orange, yellow-orange, yellow-green, blue-green, blue-violet, and red=violet Fourth and fifth graders used 9' by 24' paper and 3rd graders used smaller paper the next class, students then traced different shapes of feathers using white prisma color pencils and cut them out then they decorated them with unique lines and designs with white prisma color pencils My wonderful and extremely talented student teacher, Naz Kaya Erdal and I layed them out on three large sheets of black butcher paper until the feathers looked symmetrical. Once we finished the shape, we taped each feather down to the paper with painter's tape Then I hung that bad boy with TONS and tons and TONS of staples!! The next morning the kids were SO excited to find their feathers turned into GIANT wings!!! I hope the parents who come to visit will snap a pic in front of the wings and post to #ArtisFly and #riseupandsoar hashtags for social media!

These guys like tropical and subtropical climates. They get bigger than most other eagles. This particular one, a male, weighs about 10 pounds.
