Painting in Bay View It's been so long since I have blogged, let's see if I remember how to do it. Last week I finished up a busy week of classes with torrential rain for a few minutes on the last day. Fortunately, one of the ladies in the afternoon journal class had a wonderful front porch with a ceiling fan. It was an extremely hot week, and the thunderstorm didn't really cool things down. In spite of the heat, we always seemed to find a shady spot with a little breeze. At the beginning of June, we went out to California and brought back our two California grandchildren. Between the kids and classes, summer is speeding along. I'll go back through my sketchbook and try to get up to speed posting some of the sketches and demonstrations. Are you sketching? How's your summer going?
My next teaching gig is at EncaustiCamp (July 23-28) where I'll be teaching a wax printmaking class. I have lists drawn up and supplies I've been gathering for that. This year the camp is moving to much nicer quarters in Federal Way, Washington, on the water, and some folks from Northlight will be in attendance to gather photographs for a book that's being published on the event. If you want to give yourself a midsummer lift, it's not too late to sign up. Here is the class information. (My classes are filled but I believe everything else is available.) EncaustiCamp is the highlight of my summer. After that on August 8-10 comes a retreat with my good friends; Katie Kendrick, Misty Mawn and Stephanie Lee in Layton, Utah. We've been planning this one for over a year and we're all very excited about it. Stephanie will be giving each attendee a CD of her metalsmithing class and we'll all be presenting projects that we ourselves love. We're planning on a small group so you'll have lots of time with each of us and we get to take each other's classes as well. Bonus!! It's going to be a party. You can read more about it here. I'll have one more class announcement in a few days. Something right here in Portland for you painters. Yahoo! I've been sketching here and there and congratulating myself when I can wedge one in. The garden is doing well but we're back to rainy, cool weather again. The strawberries and cherries are ripe. My daughter is moving. I made a new journal and will show you the Australia pages in a later post. Everything is moving so fast around me. It's life as I love it. When it gets too hectic I chill out by pulling weeds and deadheading roses. The smell of the earth always brings me back to a quiet place. To be continued ...

Above: the April 29 page spread from my 2009 fake journal. I used Ziller Acrylic ink with a dip pen and Schmincke pan watercolors. Click on the image to view an enlargement. I have had to be away from the computer the past few days, so here is the next installment for folks reading along in my fake journal. I'll try to get back on the blog tomorrow and post the last page spread so you can have some "closure." I also hope to hear back from the judges about the contest on Monday. I'll post the results after the winner is notified. Because of time constraints I'm not going to type the text from this spread, but I think it should be pretty readable on the image if you click on it. If you have been following along and can't read it write to me and let me know and when I'm back at the computer consistently I'll post it.

Hello sweet JoMers! A bit of darkness, a bit of texture, a lot of video. Enjoy! Coucou les doux JoMeurs! Un peu de noirceur, un peu de t...
I have been an artist my whole life. It is what i do, it is who i am. I have taught art to elementary and high school students, camp kids and adults. I have created art for companies and manufacturers that have generated millions of dollars in retail sales. It's not as easy as it looks, but it is what i do. I am truly blessed that God gave me this gift of talent to share. Yesterday, i was having a conversation with my husband Tom, and my brother, Michael. Michael said, "No one loves their job, it's work! Name one person you know who LOVES their job!". To that, my husband replied, "Joanne does!". I got goosebumps! I DO love my job. When i first started licensing my artwork, i painted all my illustrations by hand with gouache and watercolors. I would occasionally us watercolor pencils to accent the paintings. That's all! I had no photoshop, or computer. Just crisp white paper and a palette of color. My supplies took up no space at all! Now years later, i have accumulated so many more art supplies, enough to have filled up my daughter's old bedroom, coverting it into my full blown in home art studio! I am able to go in there at all hours and explore with the piles of stuff that i love. The simple stash of watercolor paints and brushes has turned into "mixed media madness"! Pretty shelves, a full closet and little drawers house my journals, stamps, inks, reinkers, gel meduims, mists, acrylic paints and inks, pens, micron and pitt pens and gel and glaze pens and more pens, papers, ephemera, punches, die cuts, texture plates, modpodge, crayons, art books, markers, pencils and more!!! (breathe here) And then there are my Copics. Copics, Copics and more Copics!!!!! Oh how i love my art stuff. It gives me the opportunity to create every day, something new, exploring and experimenting. ***Note to self, i'll post a picture of my studio when i clean it up (do you ever think you'll see, it??)*** I consider myself an illustrator, but my current focus is stretching and experimenting with mixed media, using many products to enrich my creative process, while creating a pleasing work of art. That's the fun part of my "job"! Exploring with ink, paper, cardboard, paint, glitter, mists, pens, inks, stamps and modpodge. It's a far cry from just paint, paper and a brush! Inks, stamps, paper, pens, rub ons and mists…. Acrylic ink, watercolor, white paint pen... …and stardust glitter pens!!!!!!!! I have fallen back in love with blingy gel pens by Sakura. …watercolor, inks, black and white pens…. Yes Michael, i DO love my job. And i am truly grateful that i am able to employ myself as an artist.

I have boxes of all kinds of scraps that I use for my collages. Sold papers, patterned papers, vintage wall paper, vintage ads, type, stamps...When I cut or tear a piece of paper, the remainder goes in the box for next time. My collage for week 14 was made from scraps that needed no altering - everything came out of my boxes as is in shape and size. I used some Japanese papers, Japanese newspaper and a Japanese postage stamp of a woman in traditional dress. The collage was done on a heavy weight textured paper (which doesn't show in the scan) and is approximately 5" x 5.5". Collage Week 14
