There are days when it feels like all we do in the classroom is solve conflicts. Here are eight tips to help kids solve their own problems at playtime.
The perfect way to end your Around the World, All About Me, or Family Units... a lapbook project that ties together social studies and ELA! As each student dives into a search of their multicultural roots, they will practice their reading, writing, and speaking skills while gaining a deeper appreciation of the cultures that make up their family tree. Though most of the project is completed in class, three parts are taken home for family input (a flipbook, a family tree, and a family recipe card) encouraging school-home connections. All project pieces are organized inside a file folder lapbook decorated to resemble an old-fashioned suitcase! In addition to the lapbook, I have also included suggestions for a culminating activity in which students introduce their unique cultures to their classmates through a brief oral report. The best part about this project? When it's complete, you have an awesome display that celebrates your classroom's cultural diversity, and your students have a precious keepsake of their family heritage! ⭐How editable is this product? Existing colors, artwork, and text cannot be changed, and no pictures can be added. Only a few of the included pages are editable allowing you to fill in due dates and other information unique to your class. This is a PDF document, which means you will be able to type into textboxes that have already been placed on the editable pages, but you will not be able to add your own textboxes. Please use the latest version of ADOBE ACROBAT OR READER ONLY when editing this resource (Mac users should avoid using Preview.) All pages within the PDF file are contained within one continuous document. If you need to save one or more pages of the file on its own (i.e. to email to students), you will need to type those page numbers in the print dialogue box, choose "print to PDF," and save as a new file on your computer. Please email me at [email protected] if you have any questions regarding the editability of this resource. I will respond promptly! ⭐Please view the included PREVIEW for a closer look at the project to see if it is a good fit for your class! INCLUDED IN THIS RESOURCE YOU WILL FIND... a list of student objectives encompassing art & fine motor skills, grammar, writing, geography, and speaking/listening. a list of Common Core standards that apply to the project a basic outline of the project and sample photographs of a finished lapbook a project supply list (all of which can be found in your office supply cupboard!) detailed project directions and lesson suggestions a parent letter to send home explaining the project* homework directions for the project pieces that will be completed at home with family input (a flipbook, a family tree, and a family recipe card)* "Where in the World is My Family From?" Flipbook encouraging students to interview their parents about where their family originated (color and black & white) [Editable version added 9/16/21] "Ticket to Success" writing lesson, pre-writing idea organizer, and final draft ticket pattern leading students to consider future goals and cause & effect a world map for identifying the continents found in each students' family tree a family tree pattern (color and black & white) [family portrait alternative piece added 11/19/21] a pocket for a special family recipe related to the student's cultural background a mini country research project disguised as a "passport" with a separate worksheet for research notes* (cover available in color and black & white) instructions for a culminating oral report activity pattern pieces for turning a basic manila file folder into an old-fashioned "suitcase" lapbook with project-themed "travel sticker" and luggage tag (some pieces available in color) ⭐⭐NEW! ADDED 9/16/21: I have added a more editable* version of the family flipbook and directions page (you may type in the names of the adults in the student's family/ black & white version only.) This is found in a separate file within the project zip file. ⭐⭐NEW! ADDED 11/19/21: As not all students may have much knowledge of their family tree and some may come from atypical home situations, I have added a family portrait "frame" piece (in color and black & white/ NOT editable) that can serve as an alternative to the family tree piece. This is found in a separate file within the project zip file. *Editable versions of these forms are included so that you can fill in due dates and other information unique to your class. Any existing text is NOT editable. No images are editable. Please VIEW PREVIEW to see what is included. Don't hesitate to contact me at [email protected] with any questions regarding my resources!
