This week was our first week back and, boy am I tired! My class is great though...very inquisitive and eager to learn. They take their work seriously and are actively working most of the day. Who could ask for more?? We did quite a few things this week, but I want to share with you one "get to know you" project we did that really came out great. I seriously can't stop staring at it! I saw this pin on Pinterest. I love how it looks and thought it would make a great welcome sign. Now, on the pin, the hands seemed to be just colored in. I wanted something a bit more. So we started with creating Circle Maps about ourselves. What made us special? What are some things that have shaped us? Where did you go in your life? etc....Most of the kids finished these Circle Maps in class on the first day of school. I then asked the students to trace their hands and arms on a piece of 11 x 17" piece of paper. They then had to draw, write, decorate, etc...the traced in hand with items from the Circle Map. The goal was to teach their fellow classmates about themselves in a visual way, without giving away too much information (ie: I didn't want them to write paragraphs.) That is pretty much how far we got in class. So, the first homework assignment the students had to finish the project at home. I gave them this sheet so that they could be a bit more focused on their project and add a bit if they wanted. (but if you are going copy-less, just forgo this. They can write the information on a sheet of paper instead.) The next day, the hands came back to school...and they were great! I had the kids get into groups and share what they decided to put on their hands and why. The kids learned a lot about each other in that 15 minute session! You can see some of them used words as well as pictures to tell about themselves. I love the one directly in the center of this picture! Others just used pictures, like the one in the middle here. When I went to put them around a piece of poster board, like in the original pin, they didn't fit :( I think if I had used a smaller piece of paper to trace their hands to begin with they might have. Oh well! I decided to put them up as if the hands were all in a line, raising up.....and it came out great! I overlapped the hands, so I was able to get 5 or 6 on one piece of large construction paper. I then mounted them on my wall. I love it! All in all, this was a fun little project that served as a great way for the kids to get to know each other and make a nice display! What is something you do during the first week of school to help the kids get to know each other and for you to learn a little about them? Follow me on Snapchat for even more teaching ideas!

Truly a "hands-on" art project, this fun activity gets the entire class collaborating on a group work of art. This art project is the perfect complement to the Cave Art PowerPoint introduction (see my products) . Prehistoric cave art is truly a topic that captures students' imagination and stirs their creative impulse! The goal of this collaborative, “hands-on” class art project is to create a collective work of art similar to that of the prehistoric communities that left their mark on the interior of cave walls. Tens of thousands of years ago, in many parts of the world, prehistoric artists made handprints on the walls of caves. These handprints are often reverse images or stencils. In other words, the artist began by placing one hand on the cave wall, then blowing pigments (ground-up minerals or clay) through a blowpipe made from a hollow bone. When the artist pulled the hand away from the cave wall, the traced image of it was left behind for us to marvel at thousands of years later. When combined with the PowerPoint overview, this art project aligns to Common Core standards for Speaking & Listening, and History/Social Studies: SL.K.1, SL.K.5 SL.1.2, SL.1.3 SL.2.2 SL.3.1C, SL.3.1D, SL.3.2, SL.3.3 SL.4.1 SL.5.1 SL.6.1, SL.6.2 SL.7.1, SL.7.2, SL.7.3, SL.7.4 SL.8.1, SL.8.2, SL.8.4, SL.8.5 SL.9-10.1, SL.9-10.2, SL.9-10.5 SL.11-12.2, SL.11-12.3, SL.11-12.4, SL.11-12.5 CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RH.6-8.7 CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RH.9-10.9 CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RH.11-12.9 Prehistoric Cave Art Project: The Cave of the Hands, by Art History with Dr Laura, is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Unported License. So.... have you heard the new Stampin' Up! 2021-2022 annual catalog is coming soon? If not, do you live under a rock? Because almost everyone I know in the stamping world is talking about it and, if they were lucky enough to do a demo preorder, sharing samples made with the fabulous goodies! And that's what I plan to do right now. First of all, may I just say how much I LOVE all the new In Colors this year?! I've made up little samplers to go out with the new catalogs so everyone can see for themselves how lovely the colors are. (BTW, if you aren't already a demo and don't have a demo you usually order from, and would like a catalog, contact me.) You know how I love layers, and you know I also love dies, so the Color & Contour bundle was made just for me by Stampin' Up! (Not really, but they sure do seem to "get" me!) Look at those lovely dies - they have pierced, dotted, stitched, and embossed ones! So naturally I had to pair them with two new In Colors, Soft Succulent and Evening Evergreen, along with a pop of Bumblebee (from the Pansy Petals DSP). And look at that adorable little bee embellishment! Isn't it the bee's knees? So I guess there are five sneak peek here: Two new In Colors, the Pansy Petals DSP, the bee embellishment, the Scalloped Contours Dies, and the Color & Contour stamp set. Check back tomorrow for another card using this bundle on the Create With Connie & Mary Saturday Blog Hop!
