Arts Enrichment is an extra music/art time a week taught by the Art teacher Mrs. Divis and the music teacher Ms. Moon. Photo Credit The Lion King on Broadway Trailer For the next two Mondays students will be learning a fun dance to "The Circle of Life" and making African necklaces. Students will wear the necklaces while showcasing "The Circle of Life" dance at an upcoming school assembly. Photo by: Swiss.frog After those two weeks students will explore The Lion King theme more through various art projects and music activities. Some of the music activity videos are shown below: Hakuna Matata: The Lion Sleeps Tonight Music Video Lion Sleeps Tonight- Just Dance 2 Video I made two different arrangements of Lion Sleeps Tonight (and found the ukulele online) for grades 2-4, to align with what instruments they are learning in general music class. Grade 2 will learn the song on boomwhackers, grade 3 on the barred instruments, and grade 4 on the ukulele. I will also give a brief description of some common African instruments and add appropriate percussion parts (likely only one or two per grade of the percussion parts listed below). Below is a video from a 2nd grade class of students playing the boomwhacker part and some African instruments. Here is a 3rd grade class practicing the mallet accompaniment to "Lions Sleeps Tonight". Although the Lion King takes place in Kenya, the theme of the unit opens up the wonderful opportunity to explore musical activities from all parts of Africa. Obwisana is a folk song from Ghana. Students will play a rock passing game while singing the song. The words of the song mean "The rock has crushed my hand, grandma." I found this description in a book I have: "A child singing this song is repeatedly receiving a message of security and comfort, even in the context of a phrase and game which tells of injury. The injured child can take comfort in the fact that he or she can turn to "Nana" for sympathy and assistance- the ever-present circle of relatives supports Ghanaian children and adults during times of misfortune and celebration both." Che Che Koolay is also a folk song from Ghana. The words have been said by some to be nonsense words. But the movements to the song lean toward this translation: Hands on your head Hands on your shoulders Hands on your waist Hands on your knees Hands on your ankles Hands on your ankles Hands on your ankles, hey! Notation found here Students will learn a dance similar to the popular American song, "Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes" to Che Che Koolay.

I've got a little Secret Code Spelling sheet here. I have the students write each spelling word then draw the picture for each letter next to the word to make a code. I use this as a Word Work center, but if you need a time filler - or something for your sub plans, this sheet could be put under the document camera and done whole group with the spelling list for the week. For a variation, you can have the kids mix up their spelling words and write the code only, then give it to a classmate to "break the code". Not matter how you do it, my students like this one:) Click on the picture to go to my Teachers Pay Teachers store and download this for FREE. Because I love Caldecott books and critical thinking skills, I combined them into a set of fun products -- Story Sleuths. Here's how it works: Read a specific set of Caldecott books to your students. Post a set of clues that describe 1 of the books. Students have 1 week to submit a guess as to which book is described. On Friday, winners are announced and given a certificate. A new set of clues is given on the following Monday. Play continues in this way for 4 weeks/unit. Story Sleuths are designed for K - 4 classes. They are CCSS aligned. Originally created for use by an enrichment teacher, librarian, or art teacher, they are readily usable by individual classroom teachers. Students involved in Story Sleuths exercise many levels of Bloom's Taxonomy. At the same time, they enjoy great literature, learn about artistic media, and participate in collaborative problem solving. Better yet, they love these units! Best yet . . . all Story Sleuth products are now on sale for 30% off the regular price. Hurry! They won't be marked down for long. Even the bundle is on sale!!

Boggle! I love this. This is so easy and fun for the kids. Boggle Upper and lower case letters match This is a simple activity that can be put together to create a center. You will need to print laminate and cut out the wheels. You will then create a set of clothes pins with each letter of the alphabet on them. One set upper case and one set lower. The students will match the pin to the correct spot on the wheel. Upper and Lower case letters Beginning and ending sounds This activity is the same concept as the upper and lower case letters. You can reuse your clothes pins!!!! This time students will find the clothes pin with the correct ending or beginning sound. Beginning and ending sounds Sight words are a very important part of grades k-2. A great way to use them in your ABC station is to have students build them with cookie sheets and magnetic letters. In your station you can have a variety of list so the students can pick the list that is just right for them. Then they begin to build. You can do this very easy to put together activity with sight words, math, science, or vocabulary from different books in class. The attachment I have on here is blank and an open file so you can save a blank document and then add the words you wish. In the Very Hungry Caterpillar unit there are vocab cards made and ready to use. Blank sight word cards At the start of the year another activity you can do in the ABC station is working with the students names. Each student will get an apple card ad write their name on it. Then you can take a picture of each student and put it on another apple. Picture taking is a great thing to come and let parents do and often they will even take the pictures and have them printed. Once the names and pictures are on the apples I would laminate them. Put the apples in center and have the students match the names to the pictures. If you are going to let students help pass out papers this is a great way for them to start learning each others names. Once they master this they can begin to put the apples in ABC order. Apples Here is a cute upper and lower case letter matching activity. I am working on a basketball match and it is coming soon! Upper and Lower case letter match Here's basketball! upper and lower case match
We've been reading the book, Seedfolks by Paul Fleischman, in Language Arts class. It's a story about a poor, broken neighborhood in Cleveland, Ohio that is changed when an empty lot in the neighborhood is turned into a garden. The story is told through different characters who lives are changed by the garden. In this assignment, called a "one-pager" we were told to draw a poster showing the name and author of the book, two direct quotes, a one-paragraph reflection on the story and picture that represents the main idea of the story. My poster shows four hands of different ethnicities linking together, making strength. The border is all the vegetables they planted in the garden. It's drawn with sharpies and prismacolor pencils.

Better Than a Book Report! Students Must Examine How a Character Thinks & Feels. Teacher Example (For The Diary of Anne Frank) Follow These Easy Steps: 1) Student selects a literary character or teacher selects characters for students. 2) Students take about five minutes to brainstorm any ideas they have about what is likely going on inside their characters' minds such as: recurring thoughts, fears, joyful thoughts, strong memories, recent feelings, recurring images, dreams, convictions they live by, things they say a lot, how their minds work, etc. Students can make lists or quickly jot down ideas on a scratch piece of paper. 3) Using the template provided below, students turn their ideas into images, quotations, and miscellaneous "thoughts" going on in their characters' minds. The final product should be visually appealing and neat. In my example below, I focused on about 13 total "thoughts" going on in the mind of Anne Frank.
