Some of my small space paintings went over the border from "astronomical" to abstract. This is one of them. I was trying out a spatter painting technique over the usual blue nebula, and I wanted to use another color than my usual reds and purples. So I added golden yellow to the picture and got this texture. Then I painted glitzy stars over it. So there's a little bit of Liberace (a famous costumer pianist showman of the 20th century) about this one. I named it "Golden Rain" after a garden tree with star-like yellow flowers. "Golden Rain" is acrylic on illustration board, 7" x 10", July 1992.

Spring is finally here! I love finding ways to integrate art into content areas such as language arts and math. I cannot think of a better project to welcome spring than by creating echo art flowers through a directed drawing exercise. After completing our flowers, we measured with paperclips since we are working on measurement this week. Each student added a sentence under their artwork that stated how many paperclips tall their flowers were. These flowers definitely make an awesome statement for Open House!
Listening and following verbal or oral directions is an important skill that many students lack. You may relate to Charlie Brown's teacher after going over step-by-step directions. Students often hear the sound the teacher's voice is making, but fail to tune into the meaning of the words. When students aren't actively listening, they miss important information that can impact their academic AND behavior in the classroom. One way you can help your students practice active listening so they will follow directions is with a fun activity called Listen and Draw. Listen and Draw is a great activity to do with your class at the beginning of the year when you are teaching class procedures. Include these with your plans after breaks as a warmup plus a good reminder about practicing listening and following directions.
