In 2008, I developed a self-portrait art lesson to help students express both their inner and outer selves, combining drawing, collage, and typography. I recently updated the project to include techniques like mixing skin tones, understanding facial proportions, and depicting diverse hair textures. This refreshed lesson not only enhances students' artistic skills but also encourages self-expression and identity exploration; find the full lesson plan on my website or TpT store.

My kids are obsessed with all things trucks and construction. This theme was a blast to put together, and my boys had the best time learning and playing. Construction Preschool Theme This pack is full of hands on learning activities to practice various math, literacy, and writing skills. Tool Painting- Grab your play tools and add some PAINT! This is a fun process art activity. Our favorite was our toy drill. The paintbrush fit perfectly into the drill for an awesome painting experience. Shaving Cream Blocks- We love our foam blocks. I added some shaving cream and my boys had a blast building. Block Painting- We used the foam blocks again for this painting activity. We dipped the blocks in paint and stamped different designs and buildings. Building Block Letters- Use blocks to build each letter. Rock Letters- Use small trucks to find a rock with each letter. Drive it to the matching letter. Subitizing Number Sort- Sort each number. Popsicle Stick Letter Build- Build each letter with popsicle sticks. Then trace each letter with dry erase marker. Counting Rocks- Pick a number card and count that many rocks into the truck. Dirt Writing Tray- Fill a writing tray with cocoa (dirt). Form each letter in the tray. Construction Name Craft- Build each child's name with cones. Print with Legos and paint on the background. Construction Sensory Bin- I threw some black beans, rocks, and toy trucks in this sensory bin. My boys build several chutes and ramps out of recyclables. They were a fun addition to the bin. Sticky Blocks- I taped Contact paper to the window, and my boys used the foam blocks to build. Building this way was a fun change from building on the ground. STEM Tray- Popsicle sticks and plastic shot glasses make a simple and fun STEM tray! Count the Room- Place the counting cards around the room. Walk around the room and count the pictures. Ten Frame Counting- We used loose parts to count each number on the ten frame. Dot Measurement- Use dot markers, or dot stickers to measure each line. Play Dough Letter Fill- Build each letter with rocks or play dough. Roll and Add- Roll dice and add using nuts and bolts. Hammer Smash- Use a hammer to read and smash play dough balls. There is a letter and sight word version. Build a Number- Use popsicle sticks to build each number. Build a Shape- Use Wikki Stix or Play Doh to build each shape. Hammer a Letter- Write letters on a foam block. Pick a card and hammer a golf tee into that letter. Construction Preschool Theme For more learning ideas, follow us on Instagram @michele_dillon.

I am completely CASEing this from a fellow cardmaker, Tommi, on the OWH facebook page. I thought it was so clever when I first saw it. I figured it would sit in the back of my mind for awhile UNTIL I saw these flip-flops at Michaels. I quickly snagged them with my 50% off coupon and came home to play. Once again, a GREAT use of scraps! And the "sand" is rice paper that my mentor Barb gave to me over a year ago. The whole card is mounted on white, which doesn't show well here but let me tell you... it is gorgeous in person! I tried other colors for the background but white just made it swim. Get it, swim... And so begins our plunge into summer...
Ever since I was a little girl, building a home was always a dream of mine, but it never seemed like it could be a reality. I always loved watching home makeover shows, This Old House with my Dad, and of course, my beloved Fixer Upper. I love, love seeing a home come to life, and sometimes I wonder if I should have been an interior designer and architect, because I love to be creative, but math is also my favorite subject. When building a home actually became a reality for us this year, I knew we had to make the building process special. Have you ever seen people writing their names or writing a quote in their walls during a renovation?! I wanted to take that a few steps further and write scriptures on our framing. This was something that was very meaningful to me, and it's kinda cool to think that there are scriptures within our walls blessing our home, our marriage, our future children, and anyone who walks through our doors. Today, I'll be sharing those thirty scriptures that we wrote throughout our home and the perfect place to write those scriptures, too! Front Entry Way Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out. Deuteronomy 28:6 I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you. Joshua 1:5 Peace be to this house. Luke 10:5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6 Garage Peace be to you, and peace be to your house, and peace be to all that you have. 1 Samuel 25:6 Where you go, I’ll go. Where you stay, I’ll stay. Ruth 1:16 Love your neighbor as yourself. Mark 12:31 The Lord will protect you from danger; He will keep you safe. He will protect you as you come and go, now and forever. Psalm 121:8 Powder Room Give us clean hands and pure hearts. Psalm 24:4 Stairwells/Stair Landings By wisdom, a house is built and by understanding it is established; by knowledge the rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures. Proverbs 24:3-4 For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything. Hebrews 3:4 Family Room Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love. 1 Corinthians 16:13-14 Kitchen My cup overflows with your blessings. Psalm 23:5 Give us this our daily bread. Matthew 6:11 Dining Room Build homes and plan to stay. Plant gardens, and eat the food they produce. Jeremiah 29:5 They broke bread together and ate together with glad and sincere hearts. Acts 2:46 Living Room As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. Joshua 24:15 Love one another as I have loved you. John 13:34 Laundry Room Clean me, and I will be clean. Wash me and I shall be whiter than snow. Psalm 51:7 Master Suite Love is patient. Love is kind. 1 Corinthians 13 I have found the one whom my soul loves. Song of Songs 3:4 We love because He first loved us. 1 John 4:19 His mercies are new every morning. Lamentations 3:23 This one is in between the two windows where my vanity will be. It will be a silent daily reminder for me as I get ready each and every day. Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s fault because of your love. Ephesians 4:2 Spare Bathroom Now that I, your Lord and teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. John 13:14-15 Upstairs Hallways (in between bedrooms) Train up your children in the way they should go, for when they are older, they will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6 God is our shelter and strength. Psalm 46:1 Office or Girl's Bedroom She is more precious than rubies. She is clothed with strength and dignity and she laughs without fear of the future. Proverbs 31 Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4 Spare Bedroom For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11 If you ever get the chance to build your home, or maybe you're going to be renovating your home soon, add a few of these scriptures to your framing. It will be a silent reminder that God is always with you, He loves you, and He is forever blessing your home, your life, your family, and all of the amazing people who will come through your doors. To begin their spider web art project, 5th grade students had to first draw two spiders onto black construction paper using glue. After the glue dried, students used colored chalk to draw converging lines from the center point of their papers out to create the illusion of depth for their background. The papers were then wiped off to soften the background lines and then students drew a rotational symmetric spider web on top using white chalk.

Tommy Amelia Robbie Ella Middle school work at last! This is a project I designed during my student teaching at RISD. The goal for this lesson was to study a painting and recreate it in a three-dimensional model, applying the artists' painting technique and color palette. It was also to understand scale and construct models. We first looked at a slideshow of different landscape paintings and analyzed them using elements and principles of design while also answering a worksheet that required students to look closely at their piece. Students then cut out the main features of their painting out of paper, traced them onto illustration board, and cut them out with x-acto knives. Before painting their model, students practiced painting certain elements separately and then painted their final boards with acrylic. They all came out am-az-ing! I was also happy to find out that a RISD professor has been assigning this project every year with the foundation students. It's a great way for students to expand their painting skills.

I created this PDF worksheet to help students to think creatively, elaborate, and tell a story. I've used this when I taught in elementary (as young as kindergarten) and used it also in high school. There is no right or wrong answer and it is fun to see all the creative solutions that students come up with. My high school students taking the animation pathway especially liked this worksheet. We always share the results in class to see all the different solutions. I've included a blank sheet that you can have students create their own sheet and then switch with a partner and create a drawing from it. This adds a sense of challenge and game element to it.
