Fiona, your stormy sky is spectacular! I don't get the chance to travel much. But that doesn't mean I don't love seeing, hearing and reading about exotic locales. Anthony Bourdaine, The Travel Channel, The Amazing Race, and travel memoir books - you might say I'm an official arm chair traveler. So I thought it would be fun to create some surreal hot air balloon collages with my classes this month, allowing each child to choose their own locale. My original post can be found here. I found some great landscape and global landmark calendars from the .99 Cent Store. So the first step was letting each child choose their destination from my collected calendar pages (these were cut out). From there, they created wet on wet watercolor sky backdrops using their choice of colors. On white construction paper, we created one large hot air balloon following a basic step by step lesson. These could be customized and designed using markers or oil pastels. Smaller balloons were created using painted paper and scrapbook paper to give the collage pieces a sense of depth and perspective. This was a fun project for my kindergarten through 5th grade groups. This lesson was inspired by and dedicated to my dear friend Gretchen, who traveled the world and lived life to the fullest!
Well, in my 14 years at Zamo we never had rain to contend with during our Celebration of Art festivities... until last night, that is. I must say, that although unusual for San Diego in July, the rain did not dampen the spirit of the event at all:) Attendance was robust and their were tons of smiles to brighten any gloom that drops from the sky may have brought. Again, our incredible classroom teachers and staff were amazing while leading 10 different activities for our community to participate in. Our PTF rocked ticket and food sales. Our administration hung tough in the wet silent auction area. We were visited by our School Board President, the San Diego County VAPA Coordinator, and this morning our SDUSD Superintendent stopped by too. I am so proud of what our kids accomplish every year. It's so great to be able to share the creative work of our students with our school community and VAPA decision makers at the district level and beyond. Thanks to everyone who lent a hand in making the event another great evening of art making and art appreciation! We couldn't do it without you. our school musicians kicking off the evening. rain! Up, up and away! Miffy and her balloon is one of her most iconic images. The simple illustration and bold, bright colours of the poster make it a fun-filled addition to your child's bedroom wall. Or even on the wall of your own sitting room, perhaps? Dick Bruna's iconic Miffy illustrations are instantly recognisable across the world. The bold colours and simple lines have also made Miffy a bit of a design classic! The yellow background is joyful and fun, and the balloon itself is an image of childhood innocence and play. Miffy, of course, embodies all these qualities, so it's no wonder that this is one of our favourite Miffy prints! Printed in the UK, our mini posters are printed on 11" x 14" semi-matte 280gsm gallery grade paper, for the utmost quality of print.
