The paper portrait is fun and easy way to create portraits for your students. This project for 3rd or 4th grade usually takes three, 45-minute class periods.
In 2008, I developed a self-portrait art lesson to help students express both their inner and outer selves, combining drawing, collage, and typography. I recently updated the project to include techniques like mixing skin tones, understanding facial proportions, and depicting diverse hair textures. This refreshed lesson not only enhances students' artistic skills but also encourages self-expression and identity exploration; find the full lesson plan on my website or TpT store.

6th Graders did a really nice job on this project. We started off by learning a lot about the artist Roy Lichtenstein. We watched this video and read through this handout. Using iPads and computers students worked on editing their photo to make it in a comic book style. They drew from the image they created. I had to stress to them to draw what they were seeing and not what they thought it should look like. After seeing Lichtenstein's work, students set to work using only primary color markers (and black). They were to fill in some areas solid, and use Lichtenstein's dots in other areas. I had two very different types of students with this project; one group were the students who totally embraced the idea of using interesting colors on their face, and the other who were so self conscious about it they would work with their drawing on their lap so no one could see it. Even in this day in age, you know of the "selfie," many students were just so embarrassed to do this project. It was not because of the colors, but the idea of the self portrait. Do any of you struggle with your older students at the idea of a self portrait? How do you go about problem solving it?

There are so many ways to teach Picasso portraits, I'm working with 3rd grade so I wanted to keep it simple. I'll show them some of Picasso's Portraits and then go into the project - demonstrating each step. I'm going to ask them to create diagonal folds, not even folds that create squares on their page, but more random folds. They should make about 5 folds and then using a ruler go over the fold lines with a sharpie. Looking at the lines on their page and turning it around from different sides they should see the suggestion of a face and they can begin sketching. I'm going to show them how to use the lines to begin the eyes, eyebrows, nose, mouth, chin etc... When they have a face they like they should go over it with sharpie. Now they can use watercolor to finish the portrait. I am going to emphasize complementary colors which is another way to force them to be more abstract, but also something Picasso did in his paintings. Student Work I passed out a copy of this worksheet to help them think of different ways to make the features.
