We work on drawing lines, drawing shapes, drawing faces, drawing people, filling up the white space, adding details, adding words, various illustration techniques and building stamina. We will end our drawing unit with a Mo Willems author study and a hot dog party. This is a great resource for this unit... this is our chart for our drawing unit... {Jake assured me that is an extra fin on the back of the whale...just in case you were wondering:)} books that we have been reading for our mini lessons... I also have a lot of "how to draw" books that the children like to use. Check out my $1 anchor charts on TpT! Here are some that support drawing...

The Reading Mat is a component of Reader’s Workshop but can be used in any reading program that encourages independent reading and rereading to build fluency. Please click on the preview to see photographs of the Reading Mat in action! You are going to love this! This resource includes BOTH color and black and white versions of: My Reading Mat cover with directions Go Stack Stop Stack To begin, adhere the “My Reading Mat” cover page to the top of a file folder. This will provide your students with a visual reminder of how to keep track of what they are reading and build stamina. The “Stop” and “Go” mats are adhered to the inside of the file folder. Students begin by placing their stack of books on the “GO” side of their mat. They place the harder texts at the bottom and the easiest on top (to be read first). When they finish a book it gets placed on the “STOP” side of the reading mat. When all the books are read, students then “make their way back” as they reread their books, each time placing in on the “Go” side of the mat. This will encourage your young readers to stay on task and avoid returning to the classroom library to peruse for additional books. You want your students to reread to build their fluency. It is encouraged to provide your students with a post-it so they can tally how many books they have read during independent reading to keep track of their growth. This will help them set goals and take ownership of their reading growth.
