Ever wanted to see a rabbit riding a human snail while fighting a dog riding a rabbit with a broken neck? Well, now you can!
A painting by Alex Colville shattered the artist's previous auction record at a sale held Wednesday in Toronto.
These are samples of 4th grade cave paintings on "rock" (no, it is not traditional clay - read on to find out the crazy material we used). Students did their artwork after learning about the paintings in Lascaux and other caves painted over 15,000 years ago. First, we brainstormed about the possible materials that would have been used, since there was no Wal-Mart 17,000 years ago to buy art supplies! And we discussed possible reasons for prehistoric man to have created these greart works of art. Then, we created our own hunks of cave wall for our artwork. To prepare in advance of this lesson, I gathered bags of shredded paper from the school office, and poured in some hot water to soften it up. The next day, I mixed up a couple of batches of Art Paste (shown in the yellow box below), and poured a bunch into the bags of softened recycled paper. Some kids came in at lunchtime and were thrilled to be able to help squish the "dog drool" into the gloppy paper. When 4th grade art class time arrived, I handed each student a bundle of "glop", and as we discussed the story of Lascaux and brainstormed for ideas, each student continued to knead his lump, breaking down the paper so it became a textural claylike substance by the end of the class. Here's my hands demo-ing kneading the lump. Then, each student "patty-caked" their lump into a slab of rock wall. Before putting it away to dry, students inserted a paper clip into the top to serve as a hanger. Now for the big adventure! Students had looked at animal pictures and prepared drawings in advance of "entering the caves". When they arrived for art class, they found the tables either draped with fabric or blocked off with large sheets of cardboard. Their paper clay had dried out and was rock solid and virtually unbreakable. The lights were dimmed, a CD with the sounds of wolves, rain, and other natural sounds was turned on, and students took their needed materials into their caves (under the tables). They used pieces of vine charcoal to draw, and I provided various neutral colors of paint. Paint was brought into the caves by placing small dips of colors on sheets of scrap paper, which also became mixing palettes. Some students preferred the solitude of their own corner of a cave, while others chose to crowd into a cave together. Some used flashlights as torches, and others occasionally emerged from the cave to check out their color choices. The kids were thrilled. You would have thought that I gave them the best present ever, and not just the opportunity to sit on the uncomfortable floor under a table! After the rock was painted, the kids also had the opportunity to either stamp or stencil their hand on a sheet of brown Kraft paper, which became the backing paper on a bulletin board. The 4th graders are very proud of their "prehistoric" cave paintings.

My groups first created their Alaskan snow-capped mountains using oil pastels, blending with baby oil and cotton swabs. As an added bonus, the room smelled great when we were done! Skies and seas were painted with watercolors and tempera. After these were dry, they added a splattering of white paint for their breaching whales. Hey, y'all! If you follow me on the Instagrams, then you've seen my oversharin' ways of this here fourth grade color-mixing, landscape-paintin' project. It's proven to be a super fun lesson that my students have really enjoyed (and learned a thangie or two which you just can't beat). But before I dive into the how's, why's and whutz-its of this here project, I'd like to share some exciting news with y'all... The lovely Heidi Easley of theaccidentalartistonline.com recently interviewed me as apart of a free online summit. She's interviewed over twenty artist from all over the world to share their story of makerin' and their journey of creativitiness. I had so much fun chatting with Heidi and my lil chat will go live this Wednesday, April 22nd. So! Get yourself all signed up and I'll see you on Wednesday! And now, back to our regularly scheduled post... This lesson started with an intro to the Swiss-born, Mexican-raised artist Xavier Castellanos. You can check out the prezi I created and shared with my students here. After our chat, I told the kids they'd be using the following: * 9" X 12" paper. This is small for us. But I wanted the kids to be able to really get into the details and not be overwhelmed by a massive piece of paper. * Recycled styrofoam plates. These worked great for color mixing and could be rinsed off and reused the next day. * Sax Versa Temp Paints. The kids were given the following: red, magenta, yellow, turquoise, blue and white. After a coupla days, they got some brown for trees. I know they coulda made it but they were longing for a rich brown. AND they totally spotted it on my paint shelf. Busted. * Royal Langnickel brushes in a variety of sizes. After our lil chat about Xavier, I covered what you see here in this clip. I really emphasized the color wheel and how to read it. They became pros at looking at my simple color wheel and mixing up their desired color. Sticking with my rule of only mixing two colors together (not including white) prevented the kids from entering Muddy Town. By the end of the first day, we were about here. And, because I'm a talker, the end of the second day looked a lil like this. I did blow their minds a bit on the second day by telling them that you could in fact mix more than two colors together if, and only if, they were analogous. This opened a whole new realms of possibilities and kept 'em on the color-mixing toes. We did chat about creating patterns for fields as well. Here's another vid clip to give you an idea. I do hope that makes a lic o' sense. If not, imagine how my poor students feel! What I think the kids really enjoyed about this project was color mixing. It always seems magical when you create a color that is beautiful. The kids were convinced we should frame their palettes alongside their paintings which I kinda think woulda been a swell idea had I not needed them for my four fourth grade classes. Once complete, some kids opted to add clouds to their skies, different patterns to their land. Some added trees and buildings while others did not. And others went the more evening-time, comet-zipping-through-the-sky-route. An artist after my own heart: in elementary school, I was obsessed with Haley's Comet (1985 was the year it was zipping my way and I still have all of the souvenirs, newspaper clippings and drawings to prove it). I love this painting so. I love how each of the kid's personality's shined through these colorful and happy pieces. The final optional stage was to outline each piece of land with a bold color. Many kids decided not to and I think their work looks lovely. But I do love how bold the outlined landscapes look as well. I must admit: usually when I teach landscape, it's in the form of a collage. That way the kids can literally see the difference between back, middle and foreground. Now, with this project, I'm a total convert. Especially with the heavy color-mixing element. I love how each child's personality really shined through every piece. Doesn't this one have a Grandma Moses feel to you? Check out this detail... You need: drawing sheet A2 size black strips 1,5 cm wide colored construction paper in red, yellow and blue ruler scissors glue black marker This is a teamwork lesson for two students. Draw squares and rectangles of various sizes on the colored paper. Make sure they are straight: start from a right angle and measure carefully. Cut the squares and rectangles and spread them on the white sheet. Make sure same colors do not touch each other and stick them. Continue with the black strips. Decide by yourself how many strips and where you want them, but there are four requirements: the strips must be sticked straight! (use your ruler) black strips must be sticked around all colored area's use the black strips to create white area's (squares and rectangles) don't use to much glue. Let some strips stay loose so you can put a Haring figure behind it Draw three or more Keith Haring characters on the colored paper. Cut them and paste them on the Mondriaan sheet. Be sure there is no yellow character on a yellow area. Outline the characters with a black marker and draw some 'move stripes' around them.
In this project we take the larger Dragonfly and attach to a background for a nice portrait. I'm going to show you a few options for backgrounds ranging from canvas to paper. MATERIALS REQUIRED: For Dragonfly: - paper, pencil, eraser - DRAGONFLY TEMPLATE or you can make your own - thin cardboard (cereal box), chipboard, manila tag or posterboard - white paint or gesso, optional - acrylic or tempera paint - sharpie - old book pages, text - Mod podge - clear glass gems from the Dollar store For Backgrounds: - primed canvas, heavy cardboard, posterboard, or paper I'll go thru each background in the tutorial including the materials you need. PROCEDURE: You need to trace your template onto your thin cardboard, chipboard, posterboard, or manila tag. Cut out. I was using a cereal box so I primed mine. This makes painting in the colors easier. If you are using posterboard or manila tag you can skip this step. Paint in the body of the dragonfly. I've left my wings white. At school I know depending on the grade that this might not be possible so you have options: - you can cover them with text like in the previous post - you can go back over them with a coat of white - you can glue a white paper wing on top Because the wings are large you can pair this project up with a poetry or writing exercise. Here I've cut out words in old book pages to compose a little poem on the wings. You could also print it directly on with sharpie or print the text off the computer and add it to the wings. Other wing options are making it look realistic by adding fine lines with a fine tipped sharpie. Another nice option is to add some watered down paint to the wings and then while still wet place a piece of plastic wrap on top and smunch it up a little bit. Leave the plastic wrap on while the paint dries. For all wing types I added some glitter glue for that sparkle. For the eyes I took some glass gems and painted on some Mod podge where I wanted the eyes to go and then stuck the gems on. Now you could just use glue but I like Mod podge as it dries fully. In fact it leaves a real nice texture under the gem. You can seal the entire dragonfly with a coat of podge at this time as well if you wish. BACKGROUND OPTIONS: The background at the beginning of this post was a primed canvas. I wanted some texture on it so I used one of my favorite products, Drywall compound or filler. I use my spatula to spread it on the canvas and then I use my finger to add some detail. I also used a coffee stir stick to add some fine lines into the drywall. Leave to dry, about 6 hrs. Now if you do not have a primed canvas you can do the same technique on corrugated cardboard. This is cardboard that I primed with some gesso/white paint. I usually prime any cardboard as I find if I leave it plain it tends to darken my paint colors. Once the drywall is dry paint your background/substrate with acrylic or tempera paint. Start with the sky as it is furthest back, then the reeds. Glue your Dragonfly onto the background. This is primed canvas. This is cardboard. Another background option is posterboard. Here I'm using blue posterboard and then taking a variety of painted papers, scrapbooking papers, and whatever was in my stash I cut reed shapes and glued them down. Add your Dragonfly. Here is another option. I painted a background on some paper. Let dry and then using just construction paper and kraft paper I cut out some reeds and glued then down. Attach your Dragonflies and you have a great project. If you have each child make 2 large Dragonflies you can send a portrait home and use the extra one in a large bulletin board display. Second graders loved Robert Wyland so much that we did two projects inspired by him. Out first was Warm and Cool Waves, the second were these AWESOME underwater self-portraits inspired by this, this AND this project via pinterest. I Can statements: I Can draw a self-portrait with my features in the correct places. I Can draw a sea creature realistically. Day 1: To kick off the project we looked at portrait photographs that were taken underwater and discussed what looked the same and different as above water. I showed them this video of Wyland painting underwater to connect back to Wyland. How freaky and awesome would it be to paint underwater!? After all this chatting we got to work drawing the self-portraits. I did a draw along with them up on the SMART Board to help guide where to put features and how to draw the snorkel and mask. Day 2: I checked out a large variety of sea animal books from the library and had them look through the books and choose a sea creature they wanted to draw. Before they added it to their portrait they had to practice drawing it using the books and attempt to make it look more realistic. I really pushed drawing from the images and not from their minds. This was a little difficult of a concept for them, but by the last group of 2nd graders, I finally found the right way to describe what I meant. When their practice was done I gave them their portrait to add the creature to. Nearing the end of class we came back together to talk about what good coloring looks like with crayons and how to achieve it so those that were ready to color could start. Day 3: Refreshed our coloring discussion and then they got busy coloring. When the first few were done coloring, I showed my demo of using liquid blue watercolor to do a wash over the entire page. I really made a point to explain that any paper that was showing was going to turn blue so "bad coloring" would be really visible. Make sure they color the white of their eyes or their will possibly be tears when they turn blue.... These just make me so incredibly happy to look at!
