Art history can be an incredibly complicated topic and a really tough nut to crack for anyone who hasn’t spent years upon years learning the various intricacies and subtleties needed to master the subject.
I’m getting excited thinking about our upcoming unit on American Artists! Every January and February we do six art projects, each focused on one artist per project. Studying these historical artists is such a fun way to incorporate a little art history into our homeschool week! It’s also a great introduction for the art history...
The daily practice of art history warm-ups will develop art criticism skills while investigating a broad range of artists throughout history.
A Creative Way to Get Your Secondary Students Excited About Art History Connections % %
When I was a girl, the grocery store my mother shopped at sometimes sold oddball items - including, for a time, lovely oversized books about famous artists. Fortunately for me, my mother was happy to buy me one of these books each time she shopped, and soon I had most of them. I used to pour over them and dream - and my life is richer for it. There are a number of reasons I've wanted to include art history in our homeschool. Certainly I want to expose my children to lots of different types of art in order to spur their own creativity. But art is also an important piece of history. Every kid should be able to recognize famous works of art and know who painted them - and at least a little bit about the artist and the time period in which he or she created. The great thing is, you don't need to buy curriculum in order to supplement your child's education with art! You'll want to have access to the artist's work; your library will probably have some books to help here - and it's also easy to find famous works of art online. (For example, to find famous paintings by Van Gogh, just Google "Van Gogh paintings" and click on the "images" link at the top of the page.) /P> There are also free videos, coloring pages, and other resources online that can be helpful. But mostly, you'll want to learn a bit about the artist, observe his or her style, and then let your kids try their hand at painting or drawing something similar. Let your children experiment - and don't be concerned if they decide to go off on their own creative tangent. For this, of course, you'll want a few art supplies - paper, crayons, and water colors will do, but also consider having pastels, colored pencils, finger paints, acrylic paints, and colored markers on hand. Each week, I'll share with you great free resources for adding art history to your children's lives. For young kids, consider keeping their coloring pages/art projects in a folder, then staple them all together into a book at the end of the year. For older kids, consider having the student keep a notebook; each page would have the artist's name, some basic information about him or her, plus a sample of artwork. By the end of the year, your children will have an excellent "book" to browse through and be inspired by. Currently Available Lessons (more coming every week!): Vincent Van Gogh Leonardo Da Vinci Claude Monet Pablo Picasso Rembrandt Henri Matisse Michelangelo George Seurat Andy Warhol Thomas Gainsborough Mary Cassatt Grant Wood Edgar Degas Grandma Moses Georgia O'Keeffe

History is full of war, famine, and plague, but you can't accuse it of being cruel. It's what we made it. So if anything, it's people who are vicious and wicked. The past is just... indifferent. An open book, ready to be explored. Or in this case, a Twitter account.

Simply type it into a google search and click "images" to easily share it with the class by projecting it on the whiteboard. You do not need any particular websites to complete this unit. Common Questions Answered: Which materials are neeeded? These art projects purposely use only inexpensive and easily accessible art supplies. I have worked at low-budget schools and know how expensive supplies can be. Therefore I have designed the lessons to be completed with simple supplies such as paper, scissors, markers, paints, pastels and other common items. You can see a materials list in the preview if you are not sure. How much background knowledge needed? You do NOT need any art history background to begin - you may find yourself becoming an art history expert along with your students! How much time is needed? The time needed will depend on the age group of students, and whether or not you choose to complete all the projects, extension projects and related writing activities within each unit - there are a lot of different things to choose from! Each unit will take approximately one hour for the class discussion/teacher read-aloud script and art lesson / clean up. Another hour may be needed to do additional art lessons and writing extensions. Do lessons have to be completed in order? Although the lessons are organized chronologically through history, you do NOT have to complete all the projects - you can pick and choose. You can also pick and choose between the activities included and do not have to complete them all. You may wish to complete the art projects during art period, then use the extension writing projects, word searches and coloring pages in your writing center each week, or for early finishers! What are the Literacy and Geography Components? There are many literacy components to this program as well, so it will fit in well with your writing and social studies (an early sense of history, culture and geography). A simple world map is included so students can mark the areas that each lesson focuses on. What is the Read Aloud Script for Teachers? You do not need to have ANY background knowledge of art history to teach this unit! The teacher read-aloud script guides your conversation as each lesson begins, with questions included to ask your students. You can turn to page one and begin teaching! What About Early Finishers? I have included reflect/review writing pages to work on when finished the art projects, as well as various printables, word searches for each lesson AND coloring sheets for each art period or artist. These can also be used in literacy centers or as extension lessons. What Kind of Reference Materials Will I Need? All lessons also have are easily supported visually with a simple web search. For copyright reasons the art pieces are not included, but it's more beneficial to project digital versions so all students can view paintings properly. I have listed the artist and title of the artwork clearly at the beginning of each lesson. Simply type it into a google search and click "images" to easily share with the class by projecting on the white board. You do not need any particular websites to complete this unit. How Can I Manage Student Work? All projects can be kept in a scrapbook, which results in a great portfolio and keepsake! A scrapbook cover is included. I am sure you will also want to display the fantastic artwork on the wall as well, but later it can be glued into the scrapbook along with any extension projects for that time period.
