UPDATED AUGUST 2023!! This classroom-tested unit will take you and your students through the process of planning, drafting, revising, and polishing an argumentative (or persuasive) essay. The first few days are structured, whole-class lessons. After that, the class moves into a series of writer’s workshop days as students complete mini-lessons and work on developing their own essays. __________________________________________________________________________ WHAT'S INSIDE __________________________________________________________________________ Unit Plan: Detailed lesson plans guide you through 5 days of direct instruction and 10 days of writer’s workshop using mini-lessons. Mini-Lesson Handouts AND Slideshows: (NEW) Each mini-lesson walks the writer through the concept and gives specific directions for what to do next, so students can complete the lessons independently. PowerPoint slideshows contain a full lecture script and are formatted to work on Windows, Mac, and Google Slides platforms. Handouts are packaged both as single PDFs, for a paperless classroom, and all together in one document, to make printing easier if you prefer print copies. Mini-lesson Topics: * Writing a Thesis Statement * Choosing Evidence * Integrating Evidence Into Your Argument * Building Background Knowledge * Considering Your Audience (includes forming counter-arguments) * Citing Sources (MLA 9 Style) * Title, Hook, and Closing * Transitions Performance Assessment: All learning activities in the unit lead to the performance assessment, which has students plan, draft, revise, and polish an argumentative or persuasive essay on one of six topics: 2 new topics added in 2023! Rubrics: A separate, fully editable rubric is provided for grade 7, 8, 9-10, and 11-12. Each rubric comes in two different styles and is aligned with Common Core standards for the identified grade level. Real-World Resources: Students are given a library of online articles to use as support for their essays and as models for effective writing. Articles are grouped by topic to match the four topic choices in the performance assessment. Note: Students will need internet access to read these articles, or the teacher will need to create print copies from the original online articles. Student Materials: Printable materials help students study the craft, plan their writing, and track their progress through the unit. Teacher Materials: You’ll get a carefully written set of instructions for implementing the unit, including advice for setting up the materials, tips on pacing, instructions for setting the unit up in a paperless classroom, and a full list of the Common Core standards aligned to the unit. Other materials, like answer keys and wall signs, are included for specific lessons. Sample Essays: A sample essay is provided, showing students how the writer plans, drafts, then revises an essay that fulfills the same requirements as their performance assessment. The revisions made by the sample writer line up with the skills taught in the mini-lessons, and changes are highlighted in bold so students can easily see the revision process in action. To help students understand the variety of ways they can write an argument, a second sample essay is provided, tackling the same topic with a different approach. __________________________________________________________________________ UPDATE: This unit now also includes an editable version of the Essay Planner, the graphic organizer students use to plan their essays. If you just want the organizer, it is being sold separately here. __________________________________________________________________________ Is this REALLY for Grades 7-12? __________________________________________________________________________ This unit was taught in its entirety to four groups of 7th and 8th grade students of varying abilities. Any activities that didn’t meet the students’ needs were taken out, and those that worked well were refined and improved. Advanced students were able to move through the materials without much assistance. Their writing showed significant improvement, because the lessons and sample essays set a pretty high bar for middle school writers. Other students needed more teacher support, but were able to accomplish most tasks in the unit. Based on this experience, I would say that this would be a challenging unit for grade 7 and 8, but it would definitely be manageable. For grades 9 and 10, this unit should be just right: Not too difficult for these students’ cognitive abilities, but certainly a challenge for most students. Most high school teachers tell me they have a large number of students who struggle with this kind of writing. This unit will give them practice with an excellent set of skills they can use for the rest of high school and beyond. The majority of students in grades 11 and 12 will still find these activities challenging. If many of your students are already accomplished writers, this unit will provide the structure and guidance they need to write a solid argumentative essay, but you may need to set your expectations higher when you score their work. The scoring rubrics are editable for that purpose, allowing you to adjust your expectations if you feel your students need more of a challenge. __________________________________________________________________________ NEED A NARRATIVE WRITING UNIT? Hi Everyone! Caitlin here from EB Academic Camps and The Styled Teacher where I blog about teacher fashion. I won't take up too much of your time today because I'm sure you're either thoroughly enjoying your Spring Break, or you're thisssss close to freedom for a week or so :) I have to be honest. I never had to do test prep in my classroom. There were never any state tests.* No tests that dictated the future of my students. My future. My school's future. I had none of it. And it was awesome. So, with that being said, today I simply want to share a really awesome resource with you that will be a HUGE help for your students in your classroom. One of my biggest areas of focus when I was teaching was in evidence-based, argumentative writing. To help students keep track of evidence while reading a chapter, studying a poem, or throughout the course of an entire novel, I had them keep track of evidence that would later help to support their claim or thesis for the essential question. (If you want to learn more about creating your own essential questions and how to do it, ----> click here.) And this resource helped us do just that! We also recently created this resource in a DIGITAL version, so you can use it over and over again in your paperless classroom! Please let me know if you use it in your classroom and if your students find it helpful! Thanks again for stopping by for all things Middle School :) *I taught at a private school and apparently we just kind of do whatever we want ;) In all seriousness though, we did have yearly and quarterly tests our students took as benchmarks to help us direct our instruction, but nothing that weighed as heavily on our shoulders as I see currently for all of my public school teacher friends :/

Okay... I've mentioned before that I'm super uncomfortable writing a blog post that is all about one of my TpT products. But, with that said, welcome to a blog post all about one of my TpT products! And, I'm okay with it. Because, for real, this product ROCKS! If I do say so myself :) So, argument writing is hard stuff. I love teaching it. And eventually, I think the kids like knowing how to do it. But, it's hard. SO.HARD. Especially in the beginning. I was looking for a cool way to ease us into it. A way to slide in so that it didn't seem so intimidating. An approach that made it seem exciting, even a little bit FUN! But, I couldn't find anything! And so, like anytime Google lets me down, I got creating and this little gem is the fruit of my labor! The Debating Game is fun. My kids LOVED it! So much so that they asked to play it every day for almost a week during free write time. And while playing, they are practicing supporting claims with reasoning and evidence... exactly the skill necessary for opinion/persuasive/argument writing! It's a total win-win. Fun and learning! You should know, this product does take some time to put together, so please don't buy it if you need to use it exactly five minutes later. There is laminating and cutting and organizing involved in putting these together. I made six total games for my classroom (I stored each complete game in a pencil case). I also went to the dollar store and bought one-minute sand timers and golf pencils to put in the case along with the game pieces for easy playing (though they are totally not necessary!). And you'll see I used a standard die, but there is a template for making your own dice to use when playing, so it is not necessary to have your own. It took me about an hour to print, laminate, cut, and organize all 6 games. But, now that they are together they are ready-to-go anytime we need them. I definitely see myself putting these in a writing center, using them for an anchor activity for early finishers, and leaving them in my sub plans. The kids enjoyed playing far too much to put them into storage until next year! So, if you teach opinion/persuasion/argument writing and you are looking for a fun way to practice the skills necessary for this, The Debating Game might be for you! My own students loved it and if you try it out, please let me know what yours think about it! Happy Teaching!!
