Or, il se trouve que cette modernité n'est pas arrivée d'un bloc par quelques prophètes qui font la joie des encyclopédies rapides de l'architecture. Je reçois un très beau livre : Félix Dumail, architecte de la "Cité-Jardins" dans la collection Carnets d'architectes éditée par les éditions du Patrimoine. Notons que cette collection est maintenant devenue un socle incroyable à notre histoire de l'architecture moderne, socle dont les volumes vont de Arretche, Aillaud, Perret ou encore Jean Bossu à plein d'autres architectes célèbres ou un peu oubliés que cette collection nous donne à voir et apprendre avec toujours un grand sérieux éditorial et scientifique, et aussi une qualité de mise en page superbe. On regrettera l'absence d'architecte femme dans cette collection... Donc, après la lecture de ce volume sur Félix Dumail me voici tout à fait convaincu que notre modernité et surtout celle liée à l'histoire du logement social doit beaucoup à ce type d'architecte ayant travaillé pour l'essentiel de sa carrière dans des programmes humanistes se mettant au service de l'habitat des plus pauvres avec dignité, qualité et même beauté. Des cités-jardins au Shape village de St Germain-en-Laye, Félix Dumail accorde attention au plan, à son implantation, au détail pratique ou esthétique pour que l'architecture serve d'abord au logement et donc à l'art de vivre ensemble. D'une discrétion parfaite, presque oublié, Félix Dumail est dans cet ouvrage porté à nouveau sur le devant de la scène démontrant que sa génération un rien à cheval entre le siècle précédent et la modernité des années 20, a su faire œuvre sans attendre la leçon à venir. Et, quand comme moi, on s'intéresse aux logements sociaux des Trente Glorieuses, au Hard French, on trouve dans cette personnalité et dans son œuvre un précurseur vivifiant qui renouvelle l'approche que l'on peut avoir de cette histoire.
