Im Rahmen des Förderprogramms der Bundesregierung und des Landes Niedersachsen für die nationalen UNESCO-Welterbestätten wurden in Hildesheim neben umfassenden Erhaltungs- sowie Sanierungsmaßnahmen am Mariendom und der Michaeliskirche Verbesserungen im städtebaulichen Umfeld durchgeführt und geplant. Zum 1000-jährigen Jubiläum von St. Michaelis in 2010 wurden bereits Fassadenarbeiten zur Aufwertung des Gebäudes sowie der Umbau der Außenanlagen und der Zufahrt abgeschlossen. In Hinblick auf das 1200-jährige Jubiläum des Bistums Hildesheim in 2015 sollen weitere Arbeiten rund um die beiden Weltkulturerbestätten geplant und ausgeführt werden. Die Arbeiten innerhalb des Förderprogramms gliedern sich in drei Teilprojekte: Teilprojekt 1 befasst sich mit St. Michaelis und seiner direkten Umgebung, Teilprojekt2 behandelt den Mariendom und Umgebung und Teilprojekt 3 sieht die Vernetzung prägnanter Bauten im Hildesheimer Stadtgefüge vor. Das Lichtkonzept ist Bestandteil des 3. Teilprojektes und wurde in dichter Anlehnung an den landschaftsarchitektonischen Entwurf, basierend auf der sog. "Rosenroute", von nsp landschaftsarchitekten stadtplaner ausgearbeitet. "Vernetztes" Lichtkonzept Hierbei galt es Barrieren abzubauen und die Welterbestätten nicht nur untereinander, sondern auch mit der Innenstadt zu vernetzen. Dies ist über das gut 1,2 km lange und aus rund 3000 großformatigen, hellen Granitplatten bestehende Welterbeband gelungen: Besucher werden entlang des Pfades wie selbstverständlich vom Markt zu den Sehenswürdigkeiten geführt. Vom Marktplatz – Start und Zielpunkt – führt der Pfad entlang des Kurzen Hagen auf den Michaelishügel entlang der Michaelisstraße zu St. Michaelis. Von dort leitet das Band die Burgstraße hinab zum Dom und über den Domhof zurück zum Markt über Kreuzstraße, Pelizaeusplatz, Hoher Weg und Rathausstraße. Die in den Granitplatten eingehauenen Schriftzüge "Welterbeband", "Dom" und "St. Michaelis" unterstützen die besondere vernetzende Funktion des Welterbebandes, das von Lichtstelen und eingelassenen Lichtleisten vervollständigt wird. Bestandteil des Beleuchtungskonzeptes sind die Verbindungswege zwischen den Welterbestätten sowie der Dom selbst und sein direktes Umfeld. Neben der landschaftsarchitektonischen Planung wird die Verbindung der Welterbestätten maßgeblich durch die Lichtplanung unterstützt. Zusammen mit einem einheitlichen Plattenband wird durch das Lichtbild eine visuelle Einheit erreicht und somit auch bei Nacht deutlich als Leitfaden erkannt. Im Mittelpunkt stehen dabei sowohl eine moderne und elegante Tagwirkung der Leuchte als auch das funktionelle Licht, welches maßgeblich der Aufhellung der Umgebung sowie der Orientierung dient. Die Beleuchtung begleitet das Band entlang des Weges in Form von Lichtstelen und unterstützt die Wegeführung sowohl bei Tag als auch bei Nacht. Sie haben neben der verknüpfenden Wirkung weiterhin die Aufgabe das funktionelle Licht durch die Einhaltung aller technischen Anforderungen und Vorgaben zu erfüllen. Lichtlinien und Lichtstelen leiten den Weg Ein wesentliches Element im Beleuchtungskonzept sind die Lichtlinien, die zwischen den Granitsteinen eingesetzt wurden. Sie machen das Welterbeband auch im Dunkeln sichtbar und haben so eine primäre Leitfunktion in der Nacht. Dazu wurde in die Platten ein Lichtband integriert, das großzügig und weitläufig die Straßenzüge Hildesheims illuminiert und dekorativ in Szene setzt. Eingesetzt wurde eine schlanke und elegante Bodenlichtlinie des Typs "instalight 1060 LN" mit warmweißer Lichtfarbe von Insta. Diese LED-Bodenleuchte dient der Beleuchtung von Wegen und Plätzen und ist gerade deshalb sehr robust ausgelegt, z.B. komplett aus Edelstahl gefertigt und mit Spezialverguss versehen. Außerdem ist die Leuchte rutschfest, begeh- und überrollbar, witterungs- und UV-beständig. Im Projekt der Verknüpfung der Hildesheimer Welterbestätten mussten sowohl gestalterische als auch technische Aspekte berücksichtigt werden. Für unterschiedlichste Stadträume musste eine Lösung gefunden werden, die optisch einheitlich ist und ins Stadtbild passt sowie eine Leitfunktion übernehmen kann und überall die technischen Anforderungen erfüllt. In einer umfassenden Produktrecherche untersuchte und bewertete man Lichtstelen unterschiedlicher Hersteller unter gestalterischen und wirtschaftlichen Gesichtspunkten. Aspekte, wie Lichtpunkthöhe, Leuchtenabstand sowie asymmetrische Lichtverteilung durch lichttechnische Berechnungen auf Grundlage der DIN EN 13201 wurden unter anderem bei der Recherche beachtet. Weiterhin wurde die hausseitige Abschirmung und Blendungsbegrenzung sowie Vandalismussicherheit in Abstimmung mit den Herstellern konstruktiv abgestimmt bzw. gelöst. Die Kosten wurden ferner in Abstimmung mit der Stadt, den städtischen Partnern bzw. Dienstleistern geprüft und vorkalkuliert. Verbrauch und Unterhalt auch aus ökologischer Sicht bezüglich CO2 Verbrauch, Wartungsfreundlichkeit, Montagefreundlichkeit, Lampenlebensdauer und Reinigungszyklen waren schlussendlich auch Gesichtspunkte, die in die Recherche einflossen. Der Mariendom war ebenfalls Teil des Beleuchtungsprojektes. Der Dom wurde hier als Mittelpunkt des Domhofes dezent herausgestellt und so als wichtiges Denkmal der Stadt ins rechte Licht gerückt. Nutzen für Bewohner und Besucher Vom Welterbeband würden nicht nur die Bewohner des Michaelisviertels profitieren, sondern auch Besucher aus Nah und Fern, denen unmittelbar Orientierung auf ihren Wegen zwischen Innenstadt, St. Michaelis und Dom gegeben wird, so Oberbürgermeister Kurt Machens über den Schlusspunkt eines der größten Hildesheimer Bauprojekte der Nachkriegszeit. Nicht nur die Welterbestätten sind damit seitens der Stadt ins rechte Licht gesetzt worden, sondern "nebenbei" auch die Sehenswürdigkeiten des historischen Marktplatzes. "Das Welterbeband zieht sich als Konstante durch unterschiedliche Stadträume und wurde so konzipiert, dass es sowohl in der Fußgängerzone als auch in den Wohnstraßen des Michaelisquartiers und um den Dom mit ihren jeweiligen Texturen funktioniert", ergänzt Thorsten Warnecke (Fachbereichsleiter Stadtplanung und -entwicklung) mit Verweis auf die intensive Bürgerbeteiligung bei der Gestaltung. Eingeflossen sind nämlich auch Ideen aus einem Workshop mit Vertretern aus Kunst, Politik, Verwaltung, Kirchen, Marketing und Kaufleuten.
