When one thinks of the word “sweater” or “knitwear,” one of the first images that comes to mind is a classic Aran knit sweater. Also known as a “fisherman's sweater” or an “Irish sweater,” it's a style that has truly stood the test of time. The Aran sweater (or Aran jumper, as it's called on the other side of the Atlantic), gets its name from the Aran Islands off the western coast of Ireland. A traditional Aran sweater is usually cream in color, the shade of 100% natural, unwashed sheep's wool. The first Aran sweaters were knit by fishermen's wives on the islands.Part of why these sweaters were originally knit for fishermen is because lanolin, the waxy substance secreted by sheep, made the garment water-resistant, and therefore able to be worn even when wet. Today, lanolin is usually stripped from wool when it is processed, making it less allergenic for those with lanolin allergies. Aran sweaters are also distinguished by the complex textured patterns stitched into the sweater, often multiple different types of stitches combined on one sweater. Many of the stitch patterns we see used today hold significant meaning. The honeycomb is a symbol of the hard-working bee. The cable symbolizes a wish for safety and good luck when fishing; it also represents the cables and ropes that were a part of an Aran island fisherman's daily life. The diamond stitch is a wish of success, wealth, and treasure. The basket stitch represents the fishing basket, a hope for a plentiful catch. These stitch patterns usually extend down the sweater in vertical columns. The Aran sweater began to gain more widespread popularity in the fashion world once the knitting patterns were published in the 1940's and articles about the sweaters were written in Vogue in the 1950's. By the 1960's, the knitters on the three Aran islands had difficulty fulfilling all the orders coming in from around the world.Today, Aran sweaters similar to the originals hold a position at the forefront of street style and runway trends, updated by contemporary styling. Don't expect to see the Aran sweater going anywhere anytime soon!Image Sources: 1 / 2 / 3 / 4Fine Peruvian alpaca only improves on the already beloved style, adding luxurious softness and an enhancement of its original moisture-wicking, all-weather properties. Cloud Sweater is worked from the top down. First the back yoke is worked back and forth while short rows are worked to shape the shoulders. Then each shoulder is worked separately, back and forth and with short rows. The shoulders are then joined to form the front yoke. The front and back yoke are joined at the underarms to form the body, which is worked in the round on a circular needle. The sleeves are worked from stitches that are picked up and knitted along the armhole openings. The sleeves are worked in the round. At the end, the stockinette stitch funnel neckline is worked from stitches that are picked up and knitted along the neck opening. Knit a swatch before beginning the project to check if the recommended needle size gives you the correct gauge. Size guide Cloud Sweater is designed to have approx. 25 cm [9¾ inches] of positive ease in the smaller sizes and then gradually less positive ease in the larger sizes. The sizes XXS (XS) S (M) L (XL) 2XL (3XL) 4XL (5XL) are designed to fit a bust circumference of 75-80 (80-85) 85-90 (90-95) 95-100 (100-110) 110-120 (120-130) 130-140 (140-150) cm [29½-31½ (31½-33½) 33½-35½ (35½-37½) 37½-39½ (39½-43¼) 43¼-47¼ (47¼-51¼) 51¼-55 (55-59) inches]. The measurements for the finished sweater are listed on the front page of the pattern. Measure yourself before starting your project, to determine which size will fit you the best. For example, if you measure 90 cm [35½ inches] around your bust (or around the widest part of your upper body) you should knit a size S. A size S sweater has a bust circumference of 113 cm [44½ inches] which in the given example would give you 23 cm [9 inches] of positive ease. I finished knitting the back, front, and sleeves of the redesign. I am really happy with the back. I am not as happy with the neckline on the front. It looks a little unwieldy. I'll put a sample neckline on it and see how it looks then. I don't want to sew the shoulders and sleeves together until I'm sure the front neckline is good to go. Measuring the width of the sleeves at the shoulder. When I am not gazing off into space, visualizing the neckline, the sewn in sleeves or thinking about the best way to write up the pattern, I have been doing a little fun knitting. This is the ribbing for a sweater for Kiti. If you look carefully on the left edge, you can see a buttonhole. The sides have five buttons and buttonholes along the ribbing and up about 2 more inches. It is going to be a nice design feature. I found the Cotton Fleece by Brown Sheep Co. at my lys, Anacapa Fine Yarns. It's smooth and soft to work with, but it splits if you're not careful to hold the yarn taut. One day soon this yarn will be a v-neck, long sleeve, ribbed sweater.

This knitting pattern is in Swedish. It is excellent to knit with 60 Garner Nord's own yarn from Hjelholt's 270m/ hg together with Soft Silk mohair or Heavy Merino together with Soft Silk Mohair. Moby Sweater is knitted from top to bottom with structure and braid knitting. First, the back is knitted with shortened rounds to shape the shoulder slope. Next, stitches are picked up for the shoulders, which are then brought together at the front to knit the front piece. The front piece and the back are in turn brought together under the armhole to continue working on the torso, which is worked straight down. The sleeves are knitted in the round on double pointed needles or with Magic Loop technology. Finally, an elastic edge is knitted in the neck, which is folded double and knitted down. Do a swatch to check which size stitch to use to get the right stitch strength - note that this can vary from yarn to yarn. Be careful to wash the swatch before measuring as textured knits can stretch when washed. Size guide The Moby Sweater should have a range of motion (positive ease) of 15-20 cm in relation to your bust measurement. The sizes XS (S) M (L) XL (2XL) 3XL (4XL) 5XL correspond to a bust measurement, measured on the body, of 80-85 (85-90) 90-95 (95-100) 100-110 (110-120) ) 120-130 (130-140) 140-150 cm. The measurements of the finished sweater are given on the front of the pattern. Measure yourself before you start knitting to determine which size will fit you best. If you e.g. measures 90 cm around the bust (or the widest part of your body), you should knit a size S. A sweater in size S has an overall width of 106 cm and in the mentioned example will give a range of motion (positive ease) of 16 cm. Elisabeth Blouse by Petite Knit The Elisabeth Blouse is worked from the top down. First the collar is worked so that it has stockinette stitch with the RS facing out on both front and back. language French and English Language English Level The Comfy Cable sweater is of an intermediate/advanced level: you must be familiar with cable patterns, and with basic circular knitting techniques. You also must be comfortable reading charts. Unlike most Trust the Mojo patterns for which the instructions are in very detailed written form, the pattern is here mostly presented mainly in the form of charts. You’ll be guided by the text through each step, and will have to refer to the charts in order to follow the cable patterns. Construction The Comfy Cable Sweater is worked top down in double strand with 8 mm needles, in flat and circular knitting. You will start by knitting the back, with increases on either side of the collar to form the offset shoulders, then you will work the back until you reach the underarms. You will pick up stitches along the cast on edge to knit each shoulder separately, with increases along the front edge to shape the neckline. You will join the shoulders, with cast on stitches for the front neckline. Once you reach the underarms, you will join the front to the back, and you will cast on stitches for the underarms, and you will work the bottom of the body in the round. The very bottom is worked in 1x1 rib stitch with 5 mm needles. You will pick up stitches around the armholes to work the sleeves with the Magic Loop technique. The end of the sleeves is shaped with a few decreases, and finished in 1x1 rib stitch with 5 mm needles. The collar is worked in 5 mm needles as well, in 1x1 rib stitch, with a few rows of double stockinette stitch to mark the fold. Coupe et tailles Sizes XS (S – M – L – XL – 2XL) are suited for an approximate bust circumference of 80/85 (85/90 – 90/95 – 95/105 – 105/115 – 115/125) cm, with an ease of 20 cm to 10 cm depending on the sizes. Make sure to take your measurements in order to choose the size that will fit you best. For an oversized look, chose one or two sizes larger than your usual size. There are two length options for this pattern, the mid-length version stops more or less at the hips, and the long version is 5 cm longer. You can try your sweater in the making in order to adapt the length to your convenience, keeping in mind that once blocked it will gain a lot of length and width. Of all the Nutiden colourways this one must be my favourite so far. It spent more than a year on my shelf before I knew what kind of special garment it should become. Purpurea is no regular cable sweater. With a beautifully accentuated mock (turtle) neck, a well fitting round yoke with a pattern of growing cables and a body with super practical side slits, it is a very modern yet potentially timeless garment. The pullover is knit top-down in the round and split into two halves to be worked flat at the waist line. Side slits are optional and the amount of positive ease can be easily adjusted before the separation of the body and sleeves. The pattern also comes in three body length versions: cropped, slightly cropped and regular. You can take a closer look at my sample and discover the design process in this podcast episode. Sizes The pattern is written for nine sizes: 1 (2, 3, 4, 5) (6, 7, 8, 9) to fit 74 (84, 94, 104, 114) (124, 134, 144, 154) cm // 29 (33, 37, 41, 45) (49, 53, 57, 61) in bust circumference with ca. 10-18 cm (4-7 in) of positive ease and a finished bust circumference of ca. 92 (96, 110, 118, 128) (136, 150, 158, 172) cm // 36.25 (37.75, 43.25, 46.5, 50.5) (53.5, 59, 62.25, 67.75) in. The sample is shown in size 2 on a 160 cm (5.3 ft) tall model with ca. 84–66–94 cm (33–26–39 in) body measurements. For more of the finished garment measurements, please refer to the schematic. Yarn ca. 385 (395, 440, 480, 525) (555, 620, 645, 700) g of Nutiden yarn from Honer Och Eir, 100% Swedish wool with approx. 500 m (546 yds) per 100 g plate, held double, shown in colourway Oxalis; or an estimated yardage of 963 (988, 1100, 1200, 1313) (1388, 1550, 1613, 1750) m // 1051 (1078, 1201, 1310, 1433) (1515, 1693, 1761, 1911) yds of any other worsted/light aran weight yarn with a matching gauge for a cropped version. Make sure you have enough extra yarn if you want to make a longer version. My sample is worked with 2 strands of unspun yarn (Nutiden) held together. It did turn out quite bulky, giving me a sort of Teddy Bear feeling. Some of the Nutiden colors are more gentle/light, others are more sturdy/heavy. Oxalis was on the heavier side. So if you have a heavier unspun yarn (that also includes Plotulopi) and want a lighter version with more drape, think about using 1 strand of that yarn held together with a strand of lace/light fingering weight yarn to get the gauge. Needles and notions 3.0 mm (US 2.5), 3.5 mm (US 4) and 4.0 mm (US 6) circular needles; spare cables, spare circular needles or scrap yarn to keep stitches on hold; a few stitch markers; a 4.0 mm (US 6) cable needle (optional); a tapestry needle or a crochet hook to weave in the ends and for bind-off. Gauge 16 sts & 24 rnds in 10 cm (4 in) measured over stockinette stitch worked in the round on 4.0 mm (US 6) needles after blocking; 20 sts & 24 rnds in 10 cm (4 in) measured over cable pattern of the body worked in the round on 4.0 mm (US 6) needles after blocking. Adjust the needle sizes if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
