(sign up to follow by email) April 2, 1941: The radio personality Dr. Demento was born Barret Eugene Hanse in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Barret Hanse created Dr. Demento in 1970 while working at a radio station in Pasadena, California. He played offbeat novelties on his rock oldies show, which led to the all-novelty gig. The Doctor may be best known for bringing parodist "Weird Al" Yankovic to national attention. He funded Yankovic's first EP, Another One Rides the Bus, which eventually led to a record deal and pop chart success in the 1980s and beyond. Read more: Wikipedia April 2, 1961: The Everly Brothers peaked at Number 7 in the US with "Walk Right Back." Sonny Curtis, of Buddy Holly's Crickets, wrote "Walk Right Back" while in the army and showed it to The Everly Brothers when he was home on leave. The Everly Brothers Roger Miller must have liked the song because he wrote his "Engine, Engine Number Nine" right on top of it. You can sing the two at the same time. April 9, 1977: ABBA earned their only number 1 hit in the United States when "Dancing Queen" went to the top. Dancing Queen was the lead single from Abba’s fourth album, Arrival. Released in the summer of 1976, it got to No 1 in 15 countries including the UK (where it stayed at the top for five weeks) and the US. ABBA It first came to life a year earlier, when Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson were in their tiny songwriting cabin on the Swedish island of Viggsö, trying to craft their own take on early disco. They loved the loose, languid drumbeat of George McCrae’s 1974 hit Rock Your Baby, and used it as an inspiration. The great producer had made the California duo famous, and he’d put all his genius into producing tracks like “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling,” the duo’s breakout hit. And Righteous Brother Bill Medley had learned from watching Spector. So as soon as they got the chance, the Righteous Brothers bolted from Spector’s Phillies imprint and signed with the jazz-centric label Verve instead. Paul McCartney obviously wrote it about Linda, and she got a co-writing credit. I’ve always wondered how it would feel to sing backup on this song that’s clearly about you. Instead, it’s a moony, meandering collection of sweet nothings, some of which could’ve used a rewrite: “When the cupboard’s bare, I’ll still find something there with my love.” But McCartney still recorded the thing with a 50-piece orchestra in Abbey Road. The song was originally written and produced by Tony Macaulay, an English author, composer, and songwriter. In addition, “Don’t Give Up on Us” was Soul’s debut single.
