Today's Eric Carle book was The Mixed-Up Chameleon. After teaching the kids about chameleons (like how they actually change color according to their mood or temperature, not to hide!), I read the story and we got to work on our craft. When I made my example (above), I cut out two chameleons. But when I prepared the craft for the kids, I only cut one out. I traced a chameleon template (from a coloring sheet I found) onto a paper plate. I left little spots on the head so they would have some place to attach the neon wiggle eye. The kids took another paper plate and painted it with watercolors. I really like all the colors blending together. I was tempted to have them "paint" the plate with just water first, and then go over it with watercolors, but I didn't. Once it was dry, I found the center of the plates, used a scissors to poke a hole, and used a brass fastener to attach the chameleon plate on top of the painted plate. Then the kids could turn the plate to make their chameleon change colors! I didn't think it was a big deal if I just eyeballed the center of the plate, but if you are a perfectionist you might want to measure. If the fastener isn't in the exact center of the plate, when you spin the plates you will get this: Eventually the plates won't be lined up anymore. It didn't bother me or the kids, though. I'm glad I left a spot for the eye. I only wish I could have made the tail look more like it was curled up instead of just a ball, but I didn't know how. Fun Fact: A chameleon's tongue is often as long as its body!
First graders have been working on this painting the past few weeks. We are studying weather patterns and having fun learning new techniques with watercolor like blowing, dripping, and adding salt! Third grade is painting these fun jellyfish watercolor resists! I LOVE this Liquitex gloss Medium and Varnish!! It makes a great resist! We just painted this gloss medium right on the paper to create our jellies... We are using warm colors for the Jelly and cool colors+salt for the water I just LOVE the texture from the salt! One of the high school teachers in our district used the Liquitex Gloss Medium and Varnish to make these gorgeous multimedia watercolor resists for Dia De Los Muertos. They stamped the Gloss on the paper, drew their design, and painted over it. We are going to use this technique with our Sureal Self Portraits this year! Cannot WAIT!!

Hello Friends. Do you do anything with your kiddos for April Fool's Day? Since it's just around the corner, I wanted to share an easy and fun thing that you can do with your class that takes NO PREP. NO. PREP. My favorite words, especially this time of year. Although I'm not in the classroom anymore, I home educate my own kiddos, and BELIEVE me when I tell you that I am dragging... no.. craaaawwwling towards the finish line. And that's just with 3 kids! April Fool's is on a school day this year. Our family is full of jokesters. We've had plastic wrapped toilets, water cups positioned to spill when cupboards open, fake emergencies...... you get the picture. I wanted to do something fun while not taking away from the learning that needs to happen during the day. That's why I'm pulling out my favorite resource for April Fool's again this year! My middle son loves gems and minerals so it was perfect that we read about pyrite and why it is called fool's gold. After reading it, we did a little comparing and contrasting on an organizer. We also had fun with our Fooling Facts! The idea here is that you follow "Prankster Pete" around as he travels around and messes up all sorts of grammar and math skills. I love this packet because there is something for everyone since it has 2 levels. My little one got to practice racing to 20 with addition and subtraction While my other one got to work with money and making change. We even reviewed some language arts I'm excited to use this resource again so that we can have some "safe" pranking during school hours. After school? Well, I can't promise that everyone will be safe from a house full of jokesters. I've already caught my kids Pinteresting some good pranks, so I'm going to need a few tricks of my own. :) You can grab a copy of my April Fool's Day resource here:
