Painting Sunflowers 1st Grade Collaborative Art Each child drew one sunflower and painted it with a dabbing technique to represent Vincent van Gogh's style of painting. They created visible brushstrokes and applied thick paint. The sunflowers will then be cut out and glued to a large paper with a vase drawn on it. The vase will be filled with the sunflowers from one entire class. Collaborative art is a great way to promote class unity and a creative community. The students were inspired by Vincent van Gogh's Sunflower paintings. Here is a throwback from 9/24/2011. I love the "Sir Cumference" math series and plan on using them with my fifth graders. There are a few new books that I need to add to my collection. My students LOVE using the elastic to create geometric shapes. Great way to get the kids up and moving. My principal walked in last year while I did that lesson and she wrote it up for my evaluation. (love when that happens) Original Post: My first math unit in Every Day Math is Geometry. I was pretty relieved because I taught it in late spring with my third graders and it is a unit that they love. There are only a few new vocabulary words introduced at this level . I read a few of my favorite geometry books and planned activities to reinforce our standards: We used compasses for the first time. It went better than I thought. No one tried to poke anyone and there were no accidents. We practiced drawing concentric circles. It also reinforced our multiplication facts. Another activity that we did was break into several groups and use our bodies with elastic to create polygons and to demonstrate geometric terms. I read the lesson on-line and it said to use Chinese jump-ropes that I could not find anywhere. (you know you are old when the kids don't know what they are) I ended up buying 3 packages of sewing elastic (3/8") and tying each one into a big circle. Here are the kids demonstrating intersecting lines. Another activity that I plan on doing next week is using toothpicks and glue to create geometric vocabulary pictures. I also found this idea from Pinterest.
I thought I would try creating a sort of vocabulary of visual elements, and use almost arbitrary combinations of them as starting points for a series of work. This was inspired by images I saw on Pinterest by Olivier Umbecker. I'm not saying that he approaches his pieces this way, just that his work gave me this idea. It is something I'm going to try out at Big Fat Art Weekend next week, see how it goes over with the group. Here are the pieces, some tentatively finished, others in process: painted shapes, paint scribble, graphite scribble, pattern, collage, loose line painted shapes and scribbles, and paint outline shapes, pattern, graphite scribble, loose line This one might be done. I added the green cellular thing at the bottom as an element. This one is definitely in process, or else I will keep it as a "demo" piece. I like the new marks. I used that sort of cellular shape thing again in this one, but in fine pen. The second one on the video. Still in process. The shape in the upper left is done with plastic wrap through a stencil. Give THAT a try! Work in Progress This might be finished. I like the spare quality, all that space around the elements. Agony and Confusion This is the first one I did on the video. It's still in progress. As I look at these all together I see some aspects I'd like to investigate further: maybe leaving more space around the elements, maybe trying to use fewer elements in each piece. I would also like to see how this approach works on a larger scale. These are all 12"x12". If you are inclined to try this, I would love to hear how it goes, and if you find it a productive way to work or get jump started. You could tack these up to your wall as a reminder.
Tommy Amelia Robbie Ella Middle school work at last! This is a project I designed during my student teaching at RISD. The goal for this lesson was to study a painting and recreate it in a three-dimensional model, applying the artists' painting technique and color palette. It was also to understand scale and construct models. We first looked at a slideshow of different landscape paintings and analyzed them using elements and principles of design while also answering a worksheet that required students to look closely at their piece. Students then cut out the main features of their painting out of paper, traced them onto illustration board, and cut them out with x-acto knives. Before painting their model, students practiced painting certain elements separately and then painted their final boards with acrylic. They all came out am-az-ing! I was also happy to find out that a RISD professor has been assigning this project every year with the foundation students. It's a great way for students to expand their painting skills.

We made farms, colorful farms, crazy farms with rivers running through them - complete with bridges, and ponds, and bunnies... Well, best just to show you. We started with stamped rectangles, 5 paint chips and a river... then we added texture on each square with stamps dipped in paint, stamps in ink, watercolor dots, zig zags and swimming fish... and bridges connecting the colorful islands over the river teaming with fish... and houses made of paint chips... and happy rabbits jumping in the trees... and smelling the roses... and happy bushes... and happy students... and a happy teacher... ahh what a perfect little world... Here was the original that I made using a monochromatic scheme, but of course their dynamic colors look oh so young and imaginative! The goal was to experiment with layers and different media and to keep going until it seemed just right. We analyzed the pieces as we worked and persevered until the art finally seemed happy. Ik heb al jaren flesjes Stampinback water color staan en ook al jaren niks meer mee gedaan. Water color heeft wat weg van ecoline en shadow paint. Voor dit kaartje heb ik aquarel papier nat gemaakt en met de druppelaar die op het flesje zit verschillende gekleurde banen getrokken. Daarna met een tandenborstel er wat waterdruppels op laten vallen en de boel laten drogen. Het heeft zo wel wat weg van alcohol inkt maar door de structuur van het aquarel papier en de frisse kleuren is het toch ook helemaal anders. Met StazOn Jet Black bestempeld en afgewerkt. Onderaan heb ik de grassprieten stempel een paar keer afgedrukt en op de puntjes van de sprieten een klein stempeltje gezet wat bij een kerst serie hoorde. Groetjes Ank
