Looking at this board I was struck by the tulips and their color ..... so I thought, since I don't have a stamp with this flowers, to create the print by drawing it by hand with a microfine Copic marker on watercolor paper. Then to give a more realistic effect I colored with the Tombows using the purple for the petals, the green for the stem and leaves and finally a gray-blue to create the shadow with grey Spectrum Noir. Then I used the Simon Says Stamp die-cut Believe on kraft paper (which I love ... I almost always use it on my projects) and doubled with gray creped rubber to give depth and depth to the sentiment. Then I created a kraft matting. Finally some drops of Nuvo to recall the dew that is very spring ... and voila! Finally a touch of light with the Sakura white gel pen. Photography has many tips and tricks of the trade used both by amateurs and famous photographers - the many uses of light, perspective, darkness, exposure, and many other bits are what makes beautiful pictures. All of that wouldn't come to one unified look without shadows though as they are what gives the image depth or in some cases, changes the view entirely. Also, they're free, they're everywhere, and there's no limit to what you can do with them if you have the know-how.

Today's artist spotlight is dedicated to the truly amazing drawings of Brooklyn-based artist, Zaria Forman. She is bringing awareness to global climate change by capturing the evolution of the arctic landscape through her large scaled chalk drawings. Her arctic landscapes are part of her Chasing the Light exhibition, in which she traveled up the coast of Greenland to observe the effect of climate change on the arctic landscape. She also traveled to the Maldives, the lowest lying country, to acknowledge that the rising tides will more than likely submerge this country first. When I think of chalk, as a medium, I usually think of fluidity and a general "smudginess"- and yes, I just now invented that word : ) But Zaria's work makes me rethink chalk completely. I am amazed by the vast and detailed landscapes she is able to create. I can almost feel the jagged edges of the ice when I look at her drawings. They are both beautiful and haunting at the same time. I absolutely LOVE them! A big THANKS! goes out to my very good friend Kelly for introducing me to her work : ) You can find original artwork available at Artsy, and you can purchase prints at ArtStar.
