Naoi gCeád Bliain - Nine Hundred Years, the third of my Clann Lir/The Children of Lir series. Aoife decreed that the swans should spend their first 300 years on lake Derravaragh (County Westmeath), the second 300 years on the Sea of Moyle (North Channel between Antrim and the Mull of Kintyre), and finally the last 300 years were to be spent on the waters of Inis Domnann (off the Co. Mayo coast). When Lir learned what had happened, he was distraught, and cursed Aoife in her turn, transforming her into an air demon. The four children lived out the nine hundred years as decreed, and thereafter came to Inis Gluaire, where they were restored to their human forms and died. The story goes that they were protected and converted to Christianity by the hermit monk Naomh Mochua. They are said to be buried on the island, upright as though standing, with Fionnuala in the centre, Fiachra and Conn to either side, with Aodh to her front. I describe my work as narrative, drawing inspiration from diverse stories ranging from Irish legends to familiar fairy tales, from romantic tragedies to the meanderings of James Joyce’s Leopold Bloom, to mention a few. Having an interest in medieval manuscripts and early Christian art has influenced my approach to image making and I frequently use gold and silver leaf in my work, most particularly on pieces that relate to ancient legends. I see some Irish legends as a literary equivalent to found ancient artifacts, affording glimpses into a distant past and I often use fragmented imagery to help convey the antiquity of a story. Some of us are born to be magic. Aoife is an ordinary teenager, hanging out with her childhood friend Carla, putting up with school. The worst she has to contend with is that the boy of Carla's dreams is trying to get off with her instead. But then, after chasing a lost little girl no one seems to be able to see, Aoife starts to develop mysterious powers. Eventually her parents confess that she isn't their real daughter. Their human child was stolen by the fairies, and Aoife is the changeling left behind in her place. Shocked and disorientated, Aoife turns to Shay, the taciturn farmer's son who is the only person who might believe her story. Together, they embark on a dangerous journey, which takes them deep into the underworld and changes everything they thought they knew about fairies.
