You don't really see the beauty of this c. 1930 quilt until you capture it with a photo. I think it sparkles with the light and dark fabric. Feedsack like, not a feedsack expert. Not a four patch or nine patch. Just random two inch squares. It is a very utilitarian quilt. Don't think I have ever seen this straight line quilting before. Looks like maybe they used a yardstick and drew lines on the back. Needs a day at the spa. But otherwise in pretty good shape.

Happy Birthday Mom! Mom's Birthday was earlier this week and one of the things that we did to celebrate was to go to Quilt Festival Chicago last weekend. They had a fabulous exhibit of quilts by Edyta Sitar of Laundry Basket Quilts. This one is my favorite. I would love to do this pattern with wool applique... Those blues and creams! *sigh* They were all so lovely! We also had a chance to visit a few quilts made by the friend of one of the Bittersweet Stitching Sisters. So very talented And the absolute best in the Primitive Quilts section! Love the free bag we received from Rainbow fabrics! I tried so hard to be good and limit my purchases. ( I am after all trying to Stitch from my Stash!) I think that I was pretty good. I did buy two new wool patterns. Love the Clipboard Quilt Series! Mom bought one too. Lori Smith had a booth and let me just say that these are even more gorgeous in person! I love Kai scissors so much that I decided to try one of their rotary cutters. I liked the small size of this one. Rag Spun Studio had the best buttons! Can you believe that the buttons on top are made of leather?! How cool is that?! I had two favorite booths at the show. The first was Brooklyn Haberdashery They go around the world to find the best artisan made notions. The pins above are blown glass with tiny flowers - made in Japan. The teeny scissors were made in Italy. I love Japanese packaging! And what was inside? Traditional Japanese pottery The spool is a magnetic needle/pin holder. (And perfect for my new scissors!) And the little button is also a magnetic needle holder. I used my hand to show their small size. Aren't they sew sweet? Mom bought a spool as well. Our other favorite booth was Epicurean Boutique. I think we could have spent all day in their booth! I was good and didn't buy anything, just enjoyed the inspiration. Unfortunately I didn't take pictures of Mom's purchases there. But let me just say their booth was amazing! I sure enjoyed Mom's birthday ;) and hope that she did too! My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him. Altijd spannend...... Applique is so much fun! All those colors together; it keeps surprising me. You can have an idea in advance, but until you see the outcome, you never know if you were right. This is month 5 of the Rowdy Flat Library Quilt BOM by Susan Smith (click). Sweet leaves, small insects, cute flowers..... I love it! Even een paar close-upjes.. A few close-ups.. En ik kon het hartje niet laten.... I just had to put in a little heart.... My Lincoln quilt is on the road to the quilters! The pattern came from Barbara Brackman and so did some of the fabric. Please read about the quilt on her blog here. It has only been a little over a year since I won the pattern and fabric so I am right on my normal schedule! I opted to make my blocks 8" instead of 12, so I made a few more. My finished quilt size is approx 64x 72. I had some of this awesome Lincoln fabric from my friend Jill and couldn't think of a more appropriate quilt to use it on. And I added some homespuns, one which had this slice in it I noticed while ironing the completed backing. I used some fusible and the same fabric and fused it closed from the opposite side. I'm sending it off to Diane, Butterfly Threads Quilting to do baptist fans for me. I knew this quilt would need a simple all over pattern. I'll be adding this quilt to my "Reruns; Quilts Inspired by the Past" lecture!! I hope you all are having a terrific week.

As I wrap up work on more UFOs (hopefully to share with you soon!), I am letting myself cut into new projects with much less guilt. This week I added a few more fabrics to one of the stacks I posted last month.

The computer catalog of their quilts is a good place to start and we spent a long time looking up our friends and favorite quilters to see what works were there. We wrote down the catalog numbers and the next day, some of the quilts were presented on the tables in the viewing room you saw in the last post about the Quilt House. This is by one of my authors, M. Joan Lintault from NY. It is one that isn’t in her book so I was excited to see it. It is a printed design on the fabric and then quilted. Just spectacular detail in the leaf designs and the colors are beautiful. Here is the Libby Lehman they own. One of her ribbon play quilts with vibrant colors after all these years! Of course, Libby is on everyone’s mind in the Quilt world and we are hoping for a complete recovery so we can see more of her work! Goats by Ruth McDowell. ONe of my friends owns a large horse piece by her so I had to see what the museum had. I regret not taking a class with her! These beautiful full quilt shots were generously provided to me by the museum. Any that are odd or badly lit were ones that I took. I couldn’t get an angle to shoot some and of course didn’t have ideal lighting so it’s the best that I could do under the circumstances. Some of the quilts that are filed flat are ones that have embellishments so can’t be folded into boxes or are too delicate.For example, this is a crazy quilt made famous by being on the cover of a Penny Mc Morris book. This embroidered bedcover from 1710-1730 has lots of gold thread, very heavy and intricate. The center medallion is a bed of gold thread and I think the base fabric is silk. As a contrast, this white wholecloth quilt from 1750-1800, France, is just fantastic free motion quilting! It’s over 5 ft so just close ups here. This is a Mughal ‘floor’ quilt from the first half of the 18th century and is silk with silk embroidery, wood-block cotton print on the reverse side. The embroidery is tiny here and amazing! I wonder if it was truly for a floor or a repro of an image on a floor? The vibrant colors of this silk were a standout and I could study this for hours. It is one of the 3 quilts that I found inspirational because of the small pieces used in the quilts. I’d like to try creating with tiny pieces. Here are the other two below. Detail in the Gallery. Pieces were about half inch at the smallest center. Made by Bertha Neiden in Lincoln, NE about 1910 of wool and probably wool scraps from clothing! Wool and felt pieced by hand! It reminds me of many gameboards all together! More photos coming in future blog posts!
