This is the most beautiful and competently worked sampler I have found. In excellent restored condition. Rectangular and vertical in orientation. Work finished by Sarah Grimsteed the 2 November 1822 aged 9 years as embroidered towards the bottom of the sampler. Worked on a fine background in beautiful colours of green, pink, gold, brown. I cannot believe the intricacy of the cross stitch and embroidery. It is a stunning piece. A decorative Regency sampler which has been professionally restored. Small areas of wear to the background which are hard to see. The subject matter is delightful with birds, squirrels holding a nut, dogs, flowers, plants, trees, baskets of fruit, flower buds in cross stitch and embroidery. A fine decorative border of green leaves and gold flowers. A spectacular central display of a large flowering plant in an urn with a dog either side on an intricately worked plinth. An attractive tree with flowers and birds atop. Intricate plants in pots and fruit in baskets. A row of leaves and flower buds towards the bottom. The name and date are so neatly worked towards the bottom in brown thread. The sampler is in a period maple wood frame with a gilt slip and glass. A little veneer missing to the right side. Two metal rings and string to the back. The conservator’s label and record card for work carried out also attached to the back. This is the neatest, most intricately worked early sampler by a young girl which would grace any home and collection. Width of sampler 31.5cm Width of frame 44cm Height of sampler 41.5cm Height of frame 54cm
