A fine antique German Baroque inlaid marquetry walnut dowry chest coffer circa 1700. The coffer having a lift up lid enclosing a storage space for clothing or linens, the chest is fitted with a lidded candle till to the left side, (candles at this time were made from tallow & kept moths away from the linens). The coffer front having three sqaure panels with geometric inlay surrounding three beautiful flowering urns inlaid with fruitwood & ebony. The chest has the original lock and key and bronze lockplate. To the interior the chest has the original silvered iron strap hinges and to the sides the original wrought iron handles, the chest is raised on carved bracket feet. A rare and magnificent antique Tuareg peoples mixed metal mounted wooden chest / coffer / monumental table box. Most impressive size, hand-crafted in Mauritania, Northwest Africa, around the turn of the late 19th / early 20th century, very high-quality craftsmanship, construction and materials, exceptionally executed highly decorative traditional Tuareg peoples design, featuring a rectangular solid rosewood case with strap-hinged lid, adorned with elaborate applied arabesque reticulated iron, copper and gilt brass overlay, surmounted by turned finial handle. The locking lift-top with ornate reticulated pierced hand-etched lockplate opens with the original key to reveal a spacious red fabric-lined interior storage compartment. Mauritania African tribal folk art; the country's name derives from the ancient Berber kingdom of Mauretania, located in North Africa within the ancient Maghreb. Berbers occupied what is now Mauritania beginning in the third century AD. Antique English Oak Mule Chest - Circa 1700's Height 78 cm x width 135 cm x 54 cm Here we have a beautiful Antique oak mule chest, circa 1700's, in original untouched condition. The chest features a heavy molded plank, hinged plank lift up top, with a stunning deep triple paneled front, with a pair of lower drawers, raised upon short stile supports. This type of chest would have primarily been used for storing bedding and clothes. In the eighteenth century, built-in wardrobes did not exist! A mule chest was often the only item of furniture that a family owned. It is believed that such chests were called “mule chests” because slippers, called mules in the 17th and 18th century, were kept in the drawers of the chest. Blankets and bedding were stored in the larger compartment above. This mule chest with drawers boasts a rich warm oak colour and retains the original polish, it has a beautiful colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received. This large antique chect would look stunning in a variety of rooms from the hallway, to the living room or bedroom, not only as an ornamental piece but also a very useful storage chest. As you would expect this is a very old mule chest and there are shrinkage splits with a few knocks, and cosmetic scratches but all part of the unique character of this chest, such a wonderful part of history that is still standing and structurally solid and sound.
