Happy Sunday friends! I am excited to spend the next couple of weeks sharing with y'all some recap posts from the girls trip that I took four years ago through New England, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia (along with some new posts from this time that I never shared also!)! I hope that it encourages you to consider taking a road trip (in part or in whole depending on your circumstances) this fall to these beautiful places in the world. Hello friends! Today I am so excited to continue to share more about out time on Prince Edward Island, specifically all about things related to "Anne". If you are an "Anne of Green Gables" fan than I hope the next few posts will be helpful in planning your own trip to the Island to visit "Anne". Today I am excited to share about the Anne of Green Gables Museum. For our time on Prince Edward Island we devoted an entire day to "all the Anne sites". For the most part we were able to see all of them and the Anne of Green Gables Museum was our first stop. To be frank we chose it as our first stop because it was practically across the street from where we were staying (Montgomery Inn at Ingleside) so it was an easy choice for a beginning. *smiles* The museum is the former Campbell home, which Montgomery called "the wonder castle of my childhood". The home was built in 1872 by her Uncle John and her Aunt Annie Campbell. It is here that Montgomery was inspired to write many novels, specifically her famous novel of Anne of Green Gables and was the setting for Anne's Lake of Shining Waters. Montgomery was married in the Campbell home on July 5, 1911. The organ that you see in the corner above and most of the furnishings of the room are still in the exact place as it was when she got married. The museum covers both floors of the Campbell home and visitors can see both the downstairs and the upstairs rooms in your visit. Sprinkled throughout the home are so many unique and wonderful things that belonged to the Campbell's and to Lucy Maud Montgomery herself. I will be honest that I feel that the reviews about the museum are pretty accurate and fair. If you go into the museum looking for information about the movie or even the book Anne of Green Gables I think that you may be disappointed with the experience. The museum actually covers more about L.M. Montgomery than about things related to Anne (except for the displays of the book, quotes from the book signaling her inspiration , and the different book translations that you see throughout the house). I walked away feeling like the title of the Museum would have been better called "The Lucy Maud Montgomery Museum" rather than "Anne of Green Gables Museum". That is not to say that I don't think that you should visit or that this should not be included in your tour of "all things Anne". Instead I say this as a bit of caution for those who are hoping to see more about Anne or references to the beloved movie (which there were none except for the opportunity to purchase the DVD's in the gift shop). After we toured the home museum, we walked outside and walked along one of the paths. The grounds are stunning and it was a beautiful day to see the property. As we walked we saw Matthew's Carriage sitting outside. The museum offers carriage rides along the property and beyond (depending on the time frame you choose). The cost of this is the most expensive "Anne thing" to do on the island so we did not do this (carriage rides start at $75.00 for 1/2 hour) but it is a cute option that the museum offers if you are interested. As the website suggests make sure you call to make a reservation for this as carriage rides are first come first serve (after reservations). You can find out more information about the carriage rides HERE. Our time outside, walking along the property, was one of my favorite parts about visiting the museum. To me this was the area that felt more "Anne of Green Gables" than inside the home. Walking outside, beside "The Lake of Shining Waters" felt like you were seeing L.M. Montgomery's imagination come to life. The museum is open from May 20 through October 15th with May hours from 11-4pm, June hours from 10-4pm, July and August hours from 9-5pm, September hours from 10-4pm, and October hours from 11-4pm. The cost of the museum entry is $6.00 (CAD) and there is also a small gift shop that is on site. I hope you enjoyed reading more about the Anne of Green Gables Museum! If you have any questions please let me know! If you are interested in finding out more about the Anne of Green Gables Museum you can do so on their website HERE.
