This is a fun project that I got from my cooperating teacher when I was student teaching last year. She did it with her emotionally handicapped class, which consists of students in several grade levels. I chose to do it with 1st grade, but I probably would have gotten better results with 2nd grade. Even my 5th and 6th graders thought the examples looked really cool when they saw them in my classroom! This lesson can be used to teach a variety of principles of art, elements of art, or color theory. I focused on contrast, and told the students to pick the brightest colors they could find in their crayon box. Then, I asked them what the darkest color of all was (black), and we used black watercolors to create contrast. The dark background makes the bright colors really pop! Here are some examples of 1st grade students' work: Here are the steps to do the project: First, you need to pick three really bright colors, and make a dot in the middle of your page with one of them: Then, you make a swirl from the middle dot to the edge of the page: Add another swirl with another color: Add your last swirl with your last color. I think it looks nicest if you make sure the end of each line ends on a different side of the paper. For example, I ended my red swirl on the bottom side, the blue swirl on the right side, and the yellow swirl on the top side: Then, start scribbling back and forth on your first line with the same color that you used to draw it. It's important to press hard with your crayons to make your colors extra bright: Scribble all the way to the end. It usually looks nicest if you scribble wider at the end: Scribble on the other two lines as well: Use black watercolors to paint over your picture. The watercolors will only stick to the white paper, since wax resists water-based paint: The finished piece:

Sight Words Worksheets & PrintablesOur collection of sight words includes a variety of worksheets and hands-on activities for Preschool children through 3rd Grade. These worksheets will help your child recognize, read, and write high frequency words. All printable worksheets, flash cards, and hands-on activities use various methods to help children recognize sight words in different contexts and avoid the simple memorization of words. Teaching TipsTeaching StrategiesTeaching Tips Do not overwhelm kids with multiple new words at a time. They can achieve more success when they fixed their knowledge of one or two words before being introduced to more. Do not teach visually similar words at a time. Kids easily get confused and there is a higher opportunity for errors. Make it personal. For example, a child may be excited to read and write about mom or dad. A child who loves soccer may be motivated to learn words such as “like” and “play” so he can include them into the writing. Let them use magnetic letters, alphabet tiles, or letter stamps. They can create sight words using clay or write them in the sand, on salt trays, or in shaving cream. Teaching Strategies Link reading and writing. If a child can write a word, there is a strong chance that he can also read it. Practice short sentences that include the sight words you are focusing on. Choose texts appropriate for a child’s reading level. Regular exposure to sight words will help children learn them. Use “word walls” as a visual aid for children who are learning new vocabulary. Children use the word wall to help them while they’re writing, with the end purpose of learning how the word is spelled. Use of personal dictionaries. Personal dictionaries are a resource that encourages independence as children are learning to use sight words in their writing.

Tonight I'm thanking the good Lord above that the weekend has arrived. This week was r-o-u-g-h! Tuesday was just about the longest day of my life...I'm telling ya, it was never ending (you know that Lambchops song? I was feeling like it was the day that never ends!). I packed Wednesday for a Thursday/Friday trip for a district training and came back this afternoon to a faculty meeting where our principal told us she is moving school. It's been an emotionally draining week. Needless to say, my firsties and I trucked on through it. Here's a peek at our week: 1) We went totally buggy this week! My kids are obsessed with the word "schema" and love letting me know what they know. We recorded some schema, watched a BrainPOP then recorded some new learning. 2) We learned about a new insect each day and recorded facts about them, labeled their parts, and completed a directed drawing. Here are some anchor charts I hung around the room. 3) After learning about the parts of an insect's body, they had to build a bug and have a buddy check their work. 4) The day we learned about Caterpillars and Butterflies, we made a cute and fun life cycle activity with noodles to represent each stage of the cycle. 5) Another milestone has been reached, and why not celebrate!!! Ashely Sanderson from Flying High in First Grade and myself are putting together a 150 follower giveaway. She has become a great bloggy friend and both of our blogs have been growing at the same rate. Take a look at some of the great bloggers who are helping us out with our giveaway. Throughout the week, we will be adding a few more. Make sure you are following the bloggers below for easy entry when the giveaway starts! Have a relaxing weekend friends!
