This Silkworm unit is a great way to learn about silkworms and goes great alongside rising your own silkworms.
To wrap up our animal unit, we learned all about insects and life cycles! I used activities from my Insect/Life cycle unit if you are interested! We had already learned about insects back in kindergarten so we reviewed insects and did a sort in our science journals. The kids remembered lots of great characteristics such as six legs, three body parts, lays eggs, etc. They also remembered that a spider is not an insect! We then read books on insects and learned facts about different insects we were interested in. The kids then wrote 2 or 3 facts in their own insect books. They really enjoyed going to our classroom library to read insect books to use to find facts. Yay for research! :) To move on to life cycles, we started with the life cycle of a butterfly. In their science journals the kids illustrated the missing stage (pupa) and labeled all the stages. We also talked about the life cycle of a frog and did a similar activity but I forgot to take a picture! :) After talking about animal life cycles, we talked about how we have a life cycle also. The kids illustrated their own "I Grow and Change" books: At the beginning of the second week of our unit, I sent home a note asking parents to send in three pictures with their student (one of their child as a baby, one of them as a toddler and one of them now). I even showed them baby/toddler/kid pictures of myself and they LOVED THEM! I included some below so you could see :) I was so cute....what happened?? haha :) On Thursday, we used these pictures to write stories of what we were like at each stage of our life. The kids wrote what they looked like and could do at each age and drew a picture of the photograph they brought. Then they wrote a story about that time in their life. Here are a few examples: The kids really enjoyed learning about life cycles! We raised caterpillars last year so I didn't do it again....I wish I had taken pictures! I will try to remember to do that next year! :) We are about done with our Texas unit so I will have that up soon! And believe it or not we only have 9 school days left so we are right in the middle of our countdown to summer fun! Stay tuned for pictures!

Today was day one of week three and man oh man has it been interesting so far (aside from a kindergartener throwing up on my brand new carpet today)! As many of you know I started at a brand new school this year - so I've had to start from scratch with my art program! I'm not sure why I just expected that the county would give me additional money for start up supplies (scissors, rulers, etc.)... cauuuuseee that didn't happen. In fact every art teacher in our county lost $50 each from our consumable budgets! :/ Sooo $400 for 1,200 kids? Awesome. Fortunately for me I have a pretty awesome principal who seems sympathetic to my position. So when day one rolled around and I still didn't have my county money, I had to rely on my own wallet for supplies. I bought some printer paper, crayons, colored pencils, and markers and started brainstorming for lessons. After much thought I landed on 'Creative Letter Drawings' for my 1st graders (a lesson I learned from my supervising teacher during student teaching). I started by reading the book "Louise Loves Art" by Kelly Light. The book is about a little girl who creates her greatest masterpiece (a drawing of her cat) but then her little brother cuts it up and makes it into something else (his greatest masterpiece). Then we talked about the idea of taking something and transforming it into something else. That's when I told my students that I was going to give them a letter of the alphabet and it was their job to turn it into something else (I suggested an animal). After drawing an example on the board, my students got to work! I LOVE LOVE LOVE their creativity!! *Some of these are not yet complete - but I just couldn't wait to post about it! As students finished their artwork.. I gave them the 'Alphabet Challenge.' They got a piece of paper with all the letters of the alphabet on it and were instructed to add a creative drawing to as many letters as they could by the end of class. I got a couple of really cute pieces! :) My teacher's example.

Today I have another little teddy bear pattern to share with you - this time with a different body shape, where the legs and body are crocheted in one piece. I made two versions - one with regular cotton yarn and one with fuzzy baby yarn. I love them both, but the soft texture of the fuzzy yarn does make them extra cut
*THIS PURCHASE IS FOR ONE PATTERN IN ENGLISH ONLY!* *PATTERNS AND ALL OTHER DIGITAL GOODS ARE NON-REFUNDABLE* Thank you for purchasing Joey the Jumbo Baby Otter's Crochet Pattern!!! Now named after the Vancouver Marine Mammal Rescue's newest rescued baby otter in 2020, I first had this concept wayyyy back in 2016. However, it wasn't until August 2018 when I finally set my heart into bringing him to reality. Crocheting big plushes take up too much time and I simply was unable to spare any during that period. Since then, I've made significant changes to every part of Joey (yes -- even his shell!). Isn’t it interesting how even the tiniest things can be adjusted? Haha! I really hope you like this pattern as much as I do. Joey is probably the biggest plush I've made so far and I'm very happy about the final outcome. I hope you'll have tons of fun with this pattern too and that whoever you gift this chubby otter to, he/she will cherish him forever! * This is a level intermediate pattern. * Joey the Jumbo Baby Otter is created with acrylic yarn. * Dimension: Head to Tail = 12 inches In this pattern, you are provided with: - Step-by-step instructions with exact yarn used so that you can create your very own Joey the Jumbo Baby Otter - Detailed photos to guide you through each part - Tips and pointers to help you succeed All photos and designs are copyrighted and belong to the creator of this pattern, Jenn @ Croochet. This pattern is the colour chart only. The mittens are a puffin scene for the back of the hand and a caplin (fish) pattern for the palms. Thumb position has not been strictly set so as to allow for modifications by the knitter. An after-thought type of thumb is intended rather than a thumb gusset. Notes: I created the chart to be knitted using Cascade 220 yarns with 3.25 mm double point needles according to my own knitting tension; you will have to modify the needle size and/or yarn type to acquire your desired size. The chart can be modified by either increasing or decreasing the number of rows to change the length of the finished mitten.

I've been meaning to upload the photos of the finished 'birthday tracker' wall display for a while and am finally getting around to it! The kiddos have really enjoyed this design. I was unsure of my decision to mount the display at their level - afraid that they'd get too rambunctious and pull the names off - but they've done a fabulous job. In fact, it's been fun to see them perusing the names before class, during free time, etc. and they're always super careful. My assistant, Maddy, and I love helping our preschoolers find their name, as well as match the other name plates to their classmates. Most of them can recognize which circle is their own, but it's great to see them learning how to recognize/identify letters and sounds to figure out what the other name plates say! If you want to know how I created this display, be sure to check out the full post --> Safari/Jungle Theme Birthday Wall.
