Jerry Poindexter is a carving judge and the author of Songbirds I and II (measured drawings, containing 50 patterns). The hooded oriole (Icterus cucullatus) measures between 7 and 8 inches in length and has a long neck and a long, curved bill. The Western population of the hooded oriole has a slightly longer bill than the Eastern birds and slightly longer wings and shorter tails. The hooded oriole is named for the orange-yellow hood on the male. The hoods on the Western birds are a paler yellow than those from the East, and there is a deeper yellow on the head. The reference for the pattern and painting notes came from study skins provided by the School of Life Sciences at Arizona State University in Tempe.
The Superb Bird-of-paradise (Lophorina superba), also called the greater lophorina, superb-bird-of-paradise, greater superb bird-of-paradise, or greater superb-bird-of-paradise is a species of the Paradisaeidae (bird-of-paradise) family. It was considered the sole species in the genus until in 2017 it was recognised that there were three species (L. superba, Lophorina minor, and Lophorina niedda). The greater lophorina is distributed throughout rain forests of New Guinea. It inhabits most common
I first heard of the junco when I was a young boy coloring eggs for Easter. Deciding to do things my way, I found a second bowl and began to mix a little of each colored dye to make my own special color. I ended up with a dark, bluish-purple and my mother laughed and said the egg I dyed looked like a junco. That was the first time I had heard the word, but I liked the sound of it. Later my mother told me what a junco was. Even when I was very young, she knew I had an intense interest in birds. I had to wait until the next winter before I could get a good look at a junco. Here in northeast Ohio, this slate-colored member of the sparrow family is commonly identified as the “snowbird.” In Ohio, we use the same name for seniors who head to Florida and points south for the winter. However, when the feathered snowbirds reach Ohio for their winter sojourns, they have already made their trips south, migrating from the more severe weather to our north. Seeing the juncos arrive in Ohio is a clear indicator that winter is upon us. Although this bird has several subspecies, this article will focus on the dark-eyed junco (Junco hyemalis), more commonly known as the slate-colored junco. I will carve the bird from tupelo, using power tools.

Of all the creatures on the planet, perhaps no other has inspired us quite like birds; they are strong, light, beautiful, and have the freedom to go anywhere they want to go. Birds have long inspired artist Tom Hill's mixed media sculptures made of carved wood, forged copper, and steel. The birds that he builds are characterizations of real species like owls and and black birds, capturing their natural personalities in a playful, even cartoonish way. He gives them big, rounded and expressive eyes, delicate feathers spun out of hardy wires, and long, spindly legs. "I tend to think of all my pieces as character studies. Spend a few seconds observing a bird; the turn of the head, the flash of an eye, puffed up feathers; each gesture conveys a wealth of visual material for the artist as we see the bird consider and interact intelligently with the world around it," he says.
