Once Wyatt said he wanted an Angry Birds birthday party, the ideas started flowing. I had my own thoughts and ideas, and I found inspiration from the internet. Angry Birds seems to be everywhere, except not in the party supply department. So, we had to come up with some things on our own; but, since when has that ever been an issue for us? We got started yesterday as soon as we got back from soccer with the balloons. I found a printable template to make the Angry Birds from balloons over on this website. And really, it's all the decorating we needed to do! We had a great assembly line...cut, spray with adhesive, stick to balloons, tie string, and hang. It was really nice to have the extra hands of my parents and Monica and Michael here to help, and to be at the party! We loved having them here! We hung them upside down from the ceiling at different levels. It couldn't have looked more awesome, in my opinion! Since the theme was based on an actual game, I figured it would be really cool to make a life-sized Angry Birds game. I couldn't find anything to go off of from the internet, so it was kind of up to me how I wanted to do it. I thought so hard about how I wanted to do it, and finally came up with it. Eric would make a slingshot (however he wanted to), we would spray paint boxes to be the stone/wood/glass that the Angry Birds shoot into, balloons for the green pigs, and (my genius idea) to paint kickballs as the Angry Birds! Which, we would give away as the party favor! (Another genius idea by me.) So, that's what I did. I used acrylic craft paint to paint the yellow and red Angry birds. And it really didn't take too long! Only a couple of hours, total, to do them all. I was really, really happy with how they turned out. After everything was in place and cleaned up, it was time to celebrate our little man! I used photoshop to create a Wyatt Angry Birds invitation. And then had it printed to use as decoration. His little face on the red Angry Bird cracks me up. Wyatt makes the best faces! Michael and Eric set up the Angry Birds game out in the back yard. They corralled all of the children onto the deck while they set it up and "tested" it out. After the men played for a bit, I got in there and set up the boxes and threw in the pig balloons. Eric tried so hard to come up with ways on how to get the balloons to pop or explode upon the Angry Bird ball hitting them, but couldn't come up with something that was cost-effective. But it was OK, because the pigs didn't last long; they got blown away or snatched by children who wanted to play with them. In the game, the slingshot and the pile-ons (?) are positioned and lined up like this. But it gave it a narrow target. So we ended up turning the pile-ons the other way, so that we could actually hit them and knock stuff down. Oh yeah, we also got a bounce house, which all of the kids loved, of course. (It's a great way to wear them out, too!) Wyatt taking a turn launching an Angry Bird. Jackson loved, loved, loved stacking the boxes. He got so into it! It doesn't surprise me, though, because of how much he loves the game. I loved watching him build the pile-ons. He was so proud of them and had so much fun doing it! The kids loved the slingshot. And I loved how they lined up and took turns with it! And it was just as much fun for everyone to make the pile-ons. As someone at the party said, it was such a great "boy" thing to have at the party. I couldn't agree more! Singing to Wyatt. Wyatt had a blast. We all had a blast. Wyatt got a bunch of cool toys, too. I don't think there was a happier boy around. The boy is so loved. So loved by all. He just has something that draws people to him. And I don't think it's the red hair. He's such a sweet, tender, loving boy and it shows! We are so happy to have him in our lives!

I don't have anything made up yet, but here are the printables. Above are the little birdies and pigs that I plan to use when making the napkin ring-like thingies. This... This... And This are labels for the photo cubes {Finished product to be shown off shortly}. These are tiny pigs I am using for the centerpieces. These... And these are slightly bigger piggies for the bean bag toss game. These are the biggest piggies. I was going to use these for the bean bag toss game, but now I think they might be too big. These too. This... and this are for the blocks that are part of the centerpieces. These are the faces found HERE for balloons, I just shrunk them smaller to fit either small balloons or the foam balls {only $.98 at Walmart} I am using on the tables. These and... My son just turned 7 years old and he really wanted to have an Angry Birds Star Wars birthday party. So it was up to me to figure out how to make that happen! The first thing I worked on the invitations. I found a nice large Angry Birds Star Wars Logo graphic online and used that as a base for my invitations. I found a font that looked like the Angry Birds Font as well as a Star Wars font and used them to add text to the image. It turned out pretty awesome, don't you think? Next I worked on the party favors/goody bags to send home with his friends. Naturally with any party theme that includes Star wars, we had to make pool noodle light sabers for all his friends. I LOVE how they turned out, and they were really easy. We just cut the pool noodles in half, and taped the bottoms with chrome duct tape. Then I used black electrical tape to make all the pool noodles look like light saber handles. Each one was different, and the boys LOVED them. We also sent home a little goody bag. Luckily Angry Birds Star Wars is very popular and I found an abundance of Angry Bird Star Wars goodies at Walmart in their dollar bins. They had pens, pencils, activity packs, notebooks, you name it! We decided to send home a fun activity pack, some coloring pages, a pencil, and Angry Birds Star Wars Bag. I put the logos on the little black bags myself. I used my craft cutter to make a stencil of the logo and then painted it on with fabric paint. They turned out great! As you can see, I just used black vinyl tablecloths and paper products. The boys didn't care about that stuff anyway. I did find a really cool double-sided Angry Birds Star Wars banner to print and hang up, which all the boys thought was pretty cool. Before long we had everything ready for the party. When the day arrived, Jonah was SO excited for the party to start. He couldn't wait for his guests to arrive. As soon as the boys arrived, they each got to pick a pool noodle. As you can guess, Jedi battles immediately ensued! The good thing is that with the pool noodle light sabers, no one really gets hurt. Especially when you lay the ground rule of "No hitting above the shoulders". Games As soon as all the boys arrived, we started the games. The first game was called Jedi Lightsaber Battle. We gave each of the boys a cracker tied on a string to put around their necks. The cracker represented their life force. They had to protect their life using their lightsaber (not by covering it with their hand!) If their cracker got broken, then they "died". The last Jedi standing was declared the winner. Needless to say, the boys loved this game! It is perfect for boys this age group or older. We even ended up playing it more than once, so it was a good thing I made plenty of "cracker necklaces". After all that lightsaber dueling, the boys were a little out of breath. So we decided to play a round of Angry Bird Star Wars Bingo. This was a great game to get the boys to sit still for a minute, and they loved it! They got to look for their favorite characters on their game boards, and eat their candy markers when someone got bingo! I actually made the bingo boards myself in Photoshop. They were based on inspiration I found at an Etsy shop and it was not too hard to create them using images I found online. We played one other quick game that the boys thought was a lot of fun: Pop the Piggies. I made lots of balloons that looked like stormtrooper pigs. I drew the faces on the with marker and then added the ears. Pretty cool, huh? We divided up into two teams and each team had to run across the lawn, grab a pig, and take it back to his team and pop it. Then the next person in line got to go get a pig to pop. The first team done with their balloons won. It was really fun! After our short games, we started the main game: life-sized Angry Bird Star Wars. A friend of ours recently did an Angry Birds party and built a real sling shot. They were kind enough to let us borrow it. How cool is that? We used lots of cardboard boxes to create the sets for the boys to shoot down. They had a great time setting up the cardboard boxes. I thought about getting plush Angry Bird Star Wars characters for them to knock down, but decided they were a bit too expensive. So I just printed out images of imperial pigs online and glued them onto boxes. Honestly I don't think the boys cared that the pictures were just glued on boxes. They just LOVED putting the balls in the slingshot and letting them fly! We had so much fun stacking the boxes up and then letting the birds go! The balls had bird faces painted on them and everything. They didn't look exactly like the characters in Angry Birds Star Wars, but nobody seemed to mind at all! We had so much fun! Before long it was time for the cupcakes. I looked everywhere for cake ideas, but did not want to dish out a ton of money for fondant figures. Nor did I especially feel like making an elaborate cake myself. So here is what we ended up with. Pretty cool, huh? I found these edible cupcake toppers at a shop called Caketattoos. They are printed with edible ink on edible paper and were so easy to put on the cupcakes. I think they looked great! The boys loved them. The shop even sells images that are large enough to put on a cake. We almost went that route, but cupcakes are always good at a party! Jonah and his friends absolutely LOVED his party. It was SO much fun that the boys didn't want to leave when their parents came to get them! Now that's what I call a party! Angry Birds Activities Are your children/students crazy over the game Angry Birds? Sometimes you can harness that enthusiasm and have it overflow into school lessons, by incorporating those goofy characters into their skill sheets and activities. I remember when Pokemon was all the rage. My second graders were so addicted, that the principal had to put a ban on card collecting at recess. To motivate them to study spelling, I drew the characters on their spelling lists and gave bookmarks to anyone who got a 100 on their test. I couldn’t believe how they improved. I was reading another teacher’s blog yesterday and a kindergarten teacher was asking others if they had any ideas for letter and number help with an Angry Bird theme, as one of her struggling students really enjoyed the game. Even my 4-year-old grandson loves to play it. I thought why not design some activities that will hopefully help this child, as well as others who might also enjoy those crazy little birds and that adorable pig. Thanks to the free clipart of Melysa Gonzalez at squidoo.com’s party ideas, I was able to make traceable upper and lowercase alphabet cards, as well as number cards. These make great Itty Bitty booklets as well as games. Make the alphabet cards into Memory Match games, or pass a card out to students and play “I Have-Who Has?” Sprinkle them on the floor and have students who have an uppercase letter find their lowercase partner. Play with a partner and put the cards in alphabetical order. See which team does it the quickest. Make a bird bag like the one pictured at Squidoo. The template for the bags and the balloons pictured below are at this link. Angry Birds bags & balloon patterns. Students reach in and pull out a card and identify it. If they do, they stay in the circle, if they can’t, they are out of the game. Make the game even more exciting by playing Kaboom. Pass around the Angry Birds bag. Instead of showing their card as they choose it, students keep their card a secret. Teacher chooses a student to start the game. They show and identify their card and then call on someone. That person shows and identifies their card. If it is a red-bird Kaboom card, they are both out, and everyone yells KABOOM! Another really fun whole-group game is “SWAT!” The Dollar Store is currently selling two fly swatters for a dollar. Ironically they are lime green and yellow! Make 2 balloon birds and tape them to the top of each one of the flyswatters. Print off my piggy alphabet cards and sprinkle them on the floor face up. Choose 2 children who have 30 - 60 seconds to swat piggy cards with their angry bird swatters. Teacher calls out the letter that they should swat. The first bird to swat the card gets the point. If they don’t slap the correct piggy their turn ends. I’ve designed "Super Swatter" certificates of praise for the "slap happy' students who participated. Dabble with Dawn's blog inspired my next game idea. She had an Angry Bird birthday party for her son. Click on the link to view her creative ideas. Make a Dixie cup tower like Dawn did in this photo, only make one with 26 cups; one for each letter of the alphabet. Print my piggy letter cards and tape one around each cup. Give students a small red rubber ball that you have drawn bird features on. Each child gets one chance to toss the ball at the piggy letter-cup tower. Children get to score a point for whatever pig letter cups that topple, but only if they can identify the letter on the cup. The student with the most points wins the game. My Y5’s always enjoyed wearing masks, and it truly helped the shyer students come out of their shells, so I designed an Angry Bird “I Spy!” mask for more fun activities. Run off the bird mask on red, yellow, white, black, and blue construction paper. These are the colors of the Angry Birds. Students choose a color and cut out their bird. You can add that bit of extra pizzazz by adding a feather to the top with a glue dot. To expedite things, run off and pre-cut the beaks using yellow construction paper. Students glue their beaks on. Little ones will need help cutting the eyeholes. Tape a Popsicle to the bottom. Students can now go around the room spying letters and numbers “tweeting” out their success when they find something starting with the letter A, or actually see that letter etc. Dawn also made a cute piggy mask out of a paper plate. You can do these same “I Spy” games by making my piggy magnifying glass. Have students use it when they are reading. Being able to catch and toss a beanbag is a Y5 report card standard, so I designed this activity: Section off a lime green sheet of tag board into 26 squares. Write a letter of the alphabet in each square. Buy a slingshot at The Dollar Store or a novelty shop. Give each child a chance to sling a red, yellow, blue, or black beanbag onto the tag board. You can easily make a beanbag by sewing up squares of felt and filling them with rice. To make the game more Angry Bird appropriate, draw a bird face onto the beanbags, and draw piggy faces in the corner of each square on the tag board. Whatever letter their beanbag bird lands on, the student identifies. If they can’t, they are out of the game. You could also put the Dixie cup letters on the tag board and see how many pig letter cups their beanbag bird knocks down. Students accumulate points by how many letters they can identify. After playing games, reward students with pencils topped with an Angry Bird or a piggy. Add a colored feather to the birds for that finishing touch. The piggy and bird number and letter sliders are also a fun way to spy and review numbers and letters. I’ve also included 7 Angry Bird skill sheets including 3 “I Spy” tabletop skill sheets. Teacher starts by calling out a letter/number. Students trace the piggy letter/number with a green marker or crayon. The first child with their hand raised gets to spy the next letter/number ‘til everyone has had a turn. Finally, I created Piggy Puzzles as a fun way to reinforce upper and lowercase letter recognition and matching. Students match the uppercase letter helmet to the lowercase letter pig. Run off my templates on lime green construction paper, laminate and cut the pieces apart. This is a fun way to partner children for a game or activity too! As an incentive, I’ve created Angry Birds certificates of praise + students can keep track of which letters they know by tracing them on their Angry Birds' Letter Logs. Parents can use playing the real game as an incentive for learning as well. For each letter/number recognized, their child earns a minute of time on the computer. yesterday we held quentin's 3rd and final 5th birthday party. just about the entire world showed up, resulting in us having 14 people staying in our house on friday night. good times. this final 5th birthday party celebration was angry birds themed. got this idea on pinterest i love how Q lined up his plush angry birds like they do in the game this was still during party set-up. then things got crazy. the wind started blowing, making citronella candles and paper table coverings a bad combo. while i ran inside to look for tablecloth clips, disaster took hold. a table cloth and several balloons / balloon weights perished in the great angry bird fire of '12. i didn't actually get to see it. i'm sure that would have really helped my stress levels. not long after the accidental pig roast, a big thunderstorm came rolling through. which is totally awesome when your main party activity includes a zillion cardboard boxes and playground balls with pig faces poorly glue-sticked on to them. sigh. but we persevered, and eventually the sun came back out. decor the saggy, waterlogged level of angry birds the portion of the birthday banner that survived gotta love when toys you already have can serve as decorations my favorite balloon guarding the "eggs" the citronella candle that started the blaze quite a haul even our awesomely tacky welcome bear got in on the party caroline's healthy lunch choice of watermelon and jelly beans the youngest guest we tried to build a slingshot for the live-action game of angry birds but it was not successful but it didn't matter we just threw the birds/balls at the pigs instead baby cousin logan is totally involved maybe the small one will work? nope. baby cousin logan wants to know what all the fuss is about we played several "levels" pickle finally gets in on the action but surprisingly, ginny (the wrecking ball) never gets involved and then the beautiful part... the recycling truck will be here on wednesday to take it all away :) cake! i think he liked it! blowing out the candles and knocking over the pig tower. 5000 points! not surprisingly, he got a lot of angry birds. i foresee some really intense levels getting constructed in my living room really excited about our piggy pillow he was very excited about presents this year. even books and clothes got positive reactions. (as opposed to last year, when anything that wasn't a monster truck was immediately dissed.) millennium falcon! he really liked this grave digger card awesome legos, uncle matt! jake and the "everland" pirates purple grave digger. i rule at parenting. more birds! and bugs! Q's pinata did not have easy-pull strings like caroline's had. first, he tried punching it... then we got out the bat lilly gave it a good shot and so did gin and pickle too after a 2nd round, no real damage had been done, so daddy took over scavengers! hey! what did i miss?
I have had the most amazing March so far. The month started off with a fantastic birthday (which included some unexpected hail and a day off of work). It continued with a couple of amazing wins by the Wolfpack and the payoff from a few months of hard work which was extremely rewarding. This weekend was kicked off with more late night basketball and housecleaning before the most awesome angry birds birthday party ever. After celebrating my baby girl's birthday we got to go to a late showing of the Hunger Games which I had been eagerly waiting months to see. It was awesome. For the birthday party Jonathan built Julianna a big slingshot which the kids used to shoot tennis balls across the front yard at pyramids of shoe boxes, angry birds style. It was perfect for six year olds. We also had the angry pig pinata that the kids had a blast beating. And of course there was plenty of sugar to eat. We were really worried about the weather because it seems like we always plan for an outdoor birthday party for Jules and then the weather does not cooperate despite her birthday being March 25th. Every year of her life it has been absolutely freezing on her birthay. This year there were tornado warnings and thunderstorms. Fortunately, it rained all morning, cleared and became sunny for the party, and rained and hailed in the evening after it was all over. It couldn't have been more perfect. God is good. I can't believe my girl is six. Furthermore, I can't believe I wore maternity capris to her six year birthday party. I think it's time to go clothes shopping; whaddya think? Anyway, fabulous weekend.
