A couple of weeks ago, tucked away down the longest driveway ever, we found our favourite NGS garden so far. Rolf’s Farm is a magically wild and rambling place, a place where roses tumble over walls and fences, where deep red and pale pink scabious dance atop the long grasses in the waist height meadows
Ferne House is a country house in the parish of Donhead St Andrew in Wiltshire, England. There has been a settlement on the site since 1225 AD. The current house, known as Ferne Park and the third to occupy the site, was designed by architect Quinlan Terry in 2001. The estate grounds straddle both Donhead St Andrew and Berwick St John parishes. text from Wikipedia I had no idea this was a new house!!! Image source

I have been travelling around in my van for some weeks over the last two months, partly selling at Fairs and partly enjoying seeing this beautiful country of ours, and undoubtedly one of the highlights of my latest trip was visiting Great Chalfield Manor near Melksham in Wiltshire. It is so quintessentially English and romantic; a medieval moated manor house with walled gardens, topiary and sumptuous planting. Above all, the garden was just dripping with roses; in the borders, climbing the walls, smothering the trees.... it reminded me of the description of the moment when Mary Lennox first passes through the door into the Secret Garden (though of course Mary sees the garden in winter, in its dormant state, but knows what beauty is to come): 'It was the sweetest, most mysterious-looking place any one could imagine. The high walls which shut it in were covered with the leafless stems of climbing roses, which were so thick that they were matted together. All the ground was covered with grass of a wintry brown, and out of it grew clumps of bushes which were surely rose-bushes if they were alive. There were numbers of standard roses which had so spread their branches that they were like little trees. There were other trees in the garden, and one of the things which made the place look strangest and loveliest was that climbing roses had run all over them and swung down long tendrils which made light swaying curtains, and here and there they had caught at each other or at a far-reaching branch and had crept from one tree to another and made lovely bridges of themselves.' Frances Hodgson Burnett The Manor is currently being used in the filming of Hilary Mantel's novel 'Wolf Hall', as the home of Thomas Cromwell. I look forward to seeing that when it comes out!

With (a) spring in my step... It has been a while. A rather long while. Blog intentions were present and willing. Life threw me other things to do first. And then one day I caved in to friends' insistence that I ought to try Instagram. So I have been instagramming a bit. (You can find me at @helenabernald on Instagram.) After months of hibernation, when I have occasionally placed a paw outside, in the vain (= desperate) hope for some spring vibes, it was not until today that I felt the air filled with hope and signs that spring is on its way. So I have (a) spring in my step today. And decided to welcome spring with some recycled, upcycled "Easter craft on a shoestring" (inspired by the very creative and crafty Helena at http://helenalyth.se/). Photos taken with my phone, so the quality is not brilliant, but you get the idea... :-) I used egg shells from previous lunches, some leftover wall paint, the tiny satin ribbons you sometimes get in new T-shirts (the ones used to keep the T-shirt on its hanger), some small branches from a pile of cut down bushes nearby, and voilà, mini vases with a spring-y, Easter-y feel! Wishing you all a lovely week! Helena
