I love seeing what the students come up with in art class. Their creativity and talent makes me smile. We studied Andy Warhol this month and the kids created all sorts of cool stuff. The self-portraits they did which were inspired by Andy Warhol's Marilyn Monroe turned out absolutely amazing. I'm so proud of them all. I'm having them made into neck ties for them. The students are suppose to give them to their dads for Father's Day gifts, but once they saw how cool they were gonna be, they all got really selfish in a hurry and wanted to...
Today my second grade friends started a new printmaking project that I thought I'd share with y'all. In our 30 minute session together, they were able to watch the first half of the video, discover a little about Andy Warhol, learn some new vocabulary, work with printmaking tools and complete about two sets of prints (one positive and one negative). Whew! Next time, we'll print again to insure that we have enough crisp prints to pick from to create our own Andy Warhol Flower-inspired collage. Lemme show you how we are creating these pop art beauties: Here's what you'll need: * Colorful copy paper. I found mine super cheap in the Back to School section of Walmart a while back. * Fake flowers. I tried real sunflowers in my experimenting and found that the petals kept falling out onto the printing plate. Fake flowers from the Dollar Tree were my best find. * Acrylic paint. I tried using tempra and it didn't work on the Gelli Arts printing plate. * Brayers * Printing plate. I used Gelli Arts but you could also use this recipe to create your own gelatin plates. * Scissors and glue * Those two little words that get everyone excited: PUFFY.PAINT. After the kids have created their prints, we'll proceed on to the collage and puffy painting portion of the video. I'll keep you posted in a follow up on just how these colorful beauties turn out. In other news, I kinda sorta totally wanna wallpaper my entire house in these. Who's up for a flower printing weekend?! Party at my house, you bring the flowers, I'll bring the brayers. I'm telling you, this project is so fun, just ask Andy... I mean, doesn't he look thrilled?! Ha! Love that wonderful Warhol, y'all. This lesson is going to be followed up by a flower painting project by our next artist inspo: Vincent van Gogh. I thought printing the sunflowers would give the kids a good opportunity to see them up close, check out those textures and better prepare them to recreate them in paint. I'll keep you posted. “I like that!” was the first thing I heard from a sixth grader when he saw the examples for this lesson. What an awesome start! We begin by discussing how art can raise awareness of an issue, which is what Andy Warhol did with his series of Endangered Animal prints. This project would be great for Earth Day. Please note this project is for prints using craft foam. My TpT shop has a separate lesson called Endangered Animals: Watercolor Paintings using black permanent markers, oil pastels and watercolors. Students draw a portrait of an animal based on a simple grid of a plus sign. Included are gridded line drawings of 30 different endangered animals. Yes, 30! This gives students lots of choices and results in a good variety in the artworks. Providing line drawings of the animals set on a simple grid helps students feel successful with the drawing step. The animals are: the Java rhino, chimpanzee, African wild dog, Amur tiger, Grevy’s zebra, red wolf, Asiatic lion, Bactrian camel, hyacinth macaw, West African giraffe, ring-tailed lemur, African wild donkey, sea lion, Asian elephant, Bengal tiger, black rhino, Sumatran orangutan, black-footed ferret, Borneo elephant, bonobo, Galápagos penguin, red panda, Amur leopard, and Saola (Asian unicorn). Also included are 6 Australian animals: the koala, wombat, spotted tree frog, wallaby, golden sun moth, and cassowary. The children learn the steps for printmaking--from etching and inking the plate to printing multiples. We create these with soft craft foam and washable printmaking ink. As an optional next step, we add more color to one (or more) of the prints with colored pencils. Time Required: about 2 hours, depending on the number of prints. People usually recognize him most for his iconic pictures of Coke bottles, Marilyn Monroe, and Campbell's soup cans. Here's his lithograph of flowers we were inspired by! Materials: Sax Versatemp Neon Paint Cardboard Painted paper flower patterns pencils scissors 12x12 Tru Ray black paper Day 1: Talk about Andy Warhol, and paint your background! We used cardboard, dipped in green paint to create the grass in the background. Then, the students painted their own fluorescent paper. They were quite messy when they finished, but they had a lot of fun! I heard a few say, "this is the best art day, EVER!" haha Day 2: trace flowers onto 4x4 pieces of painted paper, cut them out, and glue them to the dry background. We also drew 4 little dots, in the middle of the flowers with a black pastel. They did such a great job! Here are some pictures from Mrs. Kerr's class, and Taylor Campbell's class!
