Sketchbook Skool interview Andrea Joseph about the power of ballpoint Pen and why it is an Artist’s magic wand. Find out how Andrea answer these questions
Recently I've got into the habit of doing a little sketch before bed. I've always been a late night creative, I cannot go to bed if I haven't drawn at least a little something or other. But a theme has emerged, as it so often does. I have a little sketchbook that I'd sort of given the theme 'cats and dogs', but, as usual, I'd only filled in a few pages. Then, So I dug it out again and began doing a little drawing of my old cat each night. I wanted to do something that was 'live' (not that you'd notice) instead of still life. I've done more than enough still life, from around my house, in my time. The old girl is really getting on now (by that I mean she is ancient) and does little but sleep. I wish I'd started this earlier. There was a time, back in 2009, when I drew her 100 times in just a couple of days (you can see the results of that project HERE) but since then haven't really taken the time to draw her. Until now. So, here she is taking a well earned rest after a gruelling grooming session. And, her being annoyed about me putting a sketchbook and camera in her face. I've also been playing around with collage, just for shits and giggles, recently. So here she is sleeping in collage. I love those feet. And, if you did follow the link to the project I did when she was a lot younger, it turns out that here daily routine wasn't that much different back then.
When I began my first travel themed journal I filled it with the souvenirs I'd brought from my trips. Because back then I would never draw in front of people, and so I could draw the souvenirs from the privacy of my own home. In fact, when I made my second little zine I wrote inside "I am a reluctant public sketcher. Actually, that is a big fat understatement. The thought of drawing in public fills me with horror". That was about three years ago. And, here I am today. drawing on planes, and in airports, cafes, parks and streets. I made the sketches, above, on the way back from France. I was sat with a really nice French guy who watched me draw through the whole flight. He commented on my sketches and even suggested the passengers who I should draw. The guy who is asleep in the middle of the page was looking over my shoulder at what I was doing (when he'd woken up, obviously!) and the flight attendant came over to take a look. I didn't mind. At all. I don't know what has changed in a relatively short space of time. I'm certain it's not one thing. Sure, my confidence has grown and I worry less that people will think my work is rubbish. When I reflect on how far I've come it inspires me to keep on going. And, to keep pushing myself in directions that I never thought I'd go. Roads I never thought I'd travel down. Learning as much as I can to become the best illustrator that I can be. 'Cos, I love drawing. It's as simple as that really; I just love drawing.
Above is a drawing that I made at an exhibition at Buxton Museum recently. Well, I made part of it there and part at home. Below is a drawing of me, making the above drawing at the exhibition, by my friend Lynne McPeake. Pretty cool, huh?
This is rubbish. This is a coin purse and it's rubbish. The cross-hatching is a mess. The perspective is all wrong, which is why I rotated it to this funny angle. You weren't fooled though were you? It's still rubbish. It's only redeeming feature is the zip and it's the only reason I'm posting it. Well, that and it took AGES.

A little commercial break here, folks. You know, as uncomfortable as I find doing this kind of thing, I HAVE to. Today, I am offering a unique little piece of art. Well, two actually and a special edition of the zine How To Draw Like A Nut. I have just put these two little drawings above for sale. Also, included in the package is a version of the said zine, jam packed full of extra handwritten notes. So pop on by my shop for a better view HERE. Cheers!
Oh well, I didn't get around to a new Christmas drawing this year, so the sprouts are getting another airing. For those of you from outside of the UK who might be wondering why sprouts, well, I'll tell you why. In the UK it is the law that on Christmas day you must have Brussel sprouts. Honestly. You can be locked up unless you have at least one on your plate. And nobody wants that. Hope you all a have a wonderful Christmas (assuming you celebrate it). Thanks for all the visits, follows and comments. They are much appreciated. I'll be back with loads more drawings very soon. And, once again, a big thanks to those of you who have bought my drawings, zines and prints. You keep the wolf from my door. Merry Christmas everybody.

A bit of retro here. This is an oldie. It's actually six years old - where did that go? Anyway, I'm having a clear out of all my old cassettes, so, this too is up for sale. You can get your hands on it HERE.
For the first four years of blogging I was mainly a recluse. Which meant I had a lot of time to draw. But, the last six months have been a ...
Another image that just appeared in my head a couple of days ago. I'm not sure that I've executed it as well as I could have, but it's a part of this whole graphic novel idea which is currently growing and taking over my life. I feel, when I get like this, that I have to draw as much of it as I possibly can. So that I don' forget. So that I always remember the feeling of it. I don't know if that makes any sense. Maybe it does. Maybe it doesn't. It might come to something one day. Or it might just pass. But, right now, I'm living and breathing it.
I really wish I had some new work to post but right now it just ain't happening. I didn't intend posting a page of doodles but it's all I have to offer. I'll be away for some time, and I don't think I'll have access to a scanner. It's really disappointing to leave on this note, with these doodles. I hope you all have a wonderful New Year. Thanks to everyone for the visits and comments. I appreciate each and everyone. I'll be back, in the new year, with a vengeance. Catch you later.

Blogged at andreajoseph24.blogspot.com/ The best view of this is on my blog - enlarged. I have drawn everything on these shelves before. Do you remember any of them? I'm also going to use this one for Everyday Matters challenge #62 Draw a previous challenge in a different medium. I think it'll do!

The drawing funk is still going strong, but I've had other things to focus on. I've been looking back through my work, trying to decide what I should include in my upcoming exhibition. This drawing is an oldie. Over three years old, in fact. I have messed around with it a little since, just a bit more cross hatching. You know, back then when I first made this drawing I really didn't like it very much at all. But seeing it with all this time between us and I feel quite differently. I really enjoyed looking at it again and reading all the notes. They amused me. I asked a friend what they thought about me including it and they said "definitely, it shows that art can be funny". That makes me happy. So, if you visit my exhibition you will be seeing this one. You know the drill; click on drawing to read the notes.
A quickie. I think you've met before (here). Little terracotta incense burner. All done in sienna brown and burnt ochre pencils. Lovely colours and lovely names too.
This doodle art proves it's a serious creative form.
I seem to have been waffling on, in my posts, quite a lot recently. So, in this one I'll just let the drawing do the talking. You know the drill; click on the drawing for a better view.

Blue sums up how I feel today. You know that feeling when you just cannot draw? That. So here's another piece from an alphabet project I did some years ago. Hopefully tomorrow will be more colourful.
this drawing was made with a four colour ballpoint blogged here; andreajoseph24.blogspot.com/
