The Greeks were masters of philosophy, science, fine arts, geography, medicine, and legal systems. Greece is a mountainous land that is surrounded by 3 seas, The Aegean Sea, The Mediterranean Sea, and The Ionian Sea. The architecture and art were greatly influenced by the location and surrounding seas. This is where we begin to see much use of marble because they had an abundance of it. The two different peoples of Greece were the Minoans and the Mycenaeans. The Minoans inhabited the island of Crete while the Mycenaeans inhabited the mainland. For the Minoans, the Palace of Knossos was the center of the town that had a population of 40,000 people. The palace looked inward to the court. There were hundreds of rooms, including a throne room. Something very important to the Greeks was the use of motifs such as floral, marine, Greek key, and egg & dart. The Mycenaean people built their fortified cities on mountaintops. Instead of focusing on beautiful palaces, they built beehive tombs that featured corbelled domes. The use of columns was also important to ancient Greek architecture. As far as art and furniture, the Greeks put emphasis on having the correct body proportions on the human figures they painted. The Klismos chair is a well-known piece of furniture from this time. This style chair, along with many other Greek contributions to architecture and art are still used today. Ancient Greece Egg& Dart Corbelled Dome Current applications:
