One of my favorite 2013 shoes was the Hubig's Pie shoe because it was so much fun to riff on an iconic NOLA logo. So I've been thinking more and more about other NOLA iconography that might be fun to play with, like the Sucre Shoe and the K&B Shoe. I've also been working on a white and green Cafe du Monde shoe, but naturally it's going to read "Cafe du Muses" instead. As I wrote about here, I first tried doing a green base and adding white stripes, but it wasn't working out. So on take 2 I started out spray painting white paint as a base, then did three coats of white (Martha Stewart glitter, color is I think called "crystal"). When I did these three coats, I mixed the Mod Podge with a little white paint to help get a really clean white base. The interior is Recollections, color "espresso" (though I'm thinking of it more like coffee with chicory...). I started adding green stripes, still have a lot of green to add, but it's easier to add green than white, so I'm going slowly to minimize frustration. The heel and sole will also be green. I started working on the lettering to transfer (again, Recollection "espresso" glitter), first attempts shown below with the in progress shoe: When I'm working on lettering to transfer, I'll do a couple of versions of each bit so I can pick the best once the paint and glitter dry: here I did "Cafe Du" three times, and the "us" in "Muses" six times because it's tougher to get right, as it's not part of the original phrase.

I'm in the middle of my "Symbols of Canada" unit with my Grade 1's. It has been a learning experience for me, as I haven't taught Grade 1 since I was a student teacher, but it has been really fun! I'm enjoying bringing in resources for my kids all about Canada and British Columbia. Last week, I showed them "O Canada" from Ted Harrison, a Canadian painter who recently passed away. I love Harrison's paintings. They are full of colour and his style is so distinctive. As a class, we discussed the images in the book and pointed out Canadian landscapes and symbols. This week, I brought in "S is for Spirit Bear" by G. Gregory Roberts and Bob Doucet. While Ted Harrison's book has a lot of images of Northern Canada, "S is for Spirit Bear" focusses on British Columbia. It is an Alphabet Book of B.C. with beautiful illustrations by Bob Doucet. We live in B.C. and my students could relate to a lot of the images in the book. Anyone who lives on Vancouver Island will recognize the next image of the BC Ferries. I live in Victoria - B.C.'s capital city. We are on Vancouver Island, off the west coast of Canada. My kids were very excited to tell us all about their experiences taking the ferry to Vancouver, to visit family, and to other destinations. We've also been working our way through a Canada booklet I created (that you can download for free here). The booklet has 8 pages altogether, with information about the RCMP, Canadian coins, totem poles, and other symbols. This week, we completed the following page. We discussed the maple leaf and the beaver as important Canadian symbols. We also talked about where we could find these symbols (on money, on the flag, etc.). When the students were finished their page, we made beavers for a class display. I made one as a demo, using heart shapes for the face, nose, and teeth. Their beavers turned out adorable! This is how the display looked when it was finished. I have to say, I was nervous to go down to primary, but it has been a lot of fun. I'm only with this class on Fridays, and I'm sad that we only have 14 Fridays left until the end of the school year. It doesn't seem like much time at all!
Well here in the UK we've had an extremely long weekend due to the Royal wedding on friday and also today being May day(another bank holiday!). We had a very laid back friday! We got dressed up in our finery and I decorated the lounge with bunting and paperchains. I bought a flag for the monkey, but he only managed to have it for 5 minutes before he broke it and then started to assault people with the stick!! Here he is with his flag and his smart jacket. He appears to be missing a sock too!We watched the wedding with grape juice in hand and then afterwards ate an english picnic lunch of sandwiches and scones!-and my patriotic cupcakes! I made my bunting, having been inspired by all the banner dies and stamps around at the moment! I started by trying to find a union jack outline...and couldn't, so resorted to my trusty Digital Scrapbook artist, which is my version of photoshop! I then cropped it to be banner shaped, and printed off a few copies. I couldn't decide if I should use my promarkers, or pencil, so I did both! I decided that I prefered the promarkers for this, so printed off 6 more and coloured them too. I used my trimmer with its wavy blade to cut them out, and stuck them to some cream card. After punching out the corners I tied with small amounts of navy blue and white ribbon! They look super cute on the mantle piece!!! Feel free to use my union jack image and the banner templates!
