Creating Journals and Memories
Altered books are a fun way to do art. I use them as art journals to record my thoughts, creative ideas, and daily events. This is a tutorial on how I use altered books for art journaling.

Hello friends, Let me start by saying that I hope you have had a good start to 2021 so far. Where I am we are still in full lock down, so life is rather quiet, but at least that leaves lots of time for creating. Today I want to share a couple of small projects, that are good fun and simple to make. I have used a new downloadable collection from my Etsy shop, plus the freebie you will find at the end of this post, but obviously you could make these with any papers and embellishments you have. Rather than give complicated instructions, I will give a brief description with a link to a YouTube video which I used to make mine, though in each case I adapted them to what I wanted to use. The first project is a little folder made from one sheet of A4 (8.5/11") paper printed on both sides. I used a little tab to close it and sewed around it, just because I like that look, but that is really not necessary at all. Below is what it looks like from the back: Here you can see what it looks like from the outside when you open the flap. I embellished it with some bits and pieces that come with the freebie. The flap(on the left) that closes the folder, is a separate bit of paper. Unlike what is shown in the video, I attached mine on the outside, so it looks like a kind of spine. Here you can see the inside, the pockets on the side come about through the construction of the folder as is shown in the video. The front pockets are separate bits, that I decorated with bits and pieces from my stash. And here are the tags that fit in the pockets, the larger ones are part of the collection, the smaller ones are cut with a large punch and then decorated with bits from the collection and other bits from my stash. Here is the link to the videos (there are two) that describe how to make a folder like this, though the finished look is very different. Video 1 and video 2 On to project number two, this is a little origami folder, again heavily adapted, but in principle the same as described in the video linked further down. I made mine from a piece of 11.5 by 11.5 sugar paper (trimmed to a square from an A3 piece). It was a rather nasty yellow colour, so I inked all the edges and then covered all the sides with papers from the collection. Here you can see the back of it. These clever folders have 6 pockets, two on the outside , two right on the sides, and two on the inside. If you watch the video it will all become clear. Making the folder this size meant that the tags in the freebie are just the right size to fit. Here you can see the inside of my folder, it looks quite different than the ones in the videos, but that is because I covered the inside pockets with extra paper. Above you can see all the tags that fit in those pockets, plenty of space for journaling if you decide like I did to insert this folder in a larger journal. I made a larger matching journal card still from one of the elements that come with the main collection and both fit into a matching pocket that is part of a journal I am working on, but more about that at some other point. Above you can see the journal page with the matching pocket. And here is the link to the video that describes how to construct the little origami folder : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2PstrI4Ges&t=1160s And below finally is the freebie which like usual you can get in full resolution if you email me Enjoy and happy crafting! xxxxx
Hi Everyone, I am very happy to share with you my latest project, this project is a converted book, the book has been converted to what still looks like a book but it is actually a treasure box, shhhhhh. I picked up a very old book from my local second hand bookstore, it had one of those hard green vinyl covers, with gold trimming, it was $2 and with stinky old paper - PERFECT!. I am super happy with how this turned out, I shall now place it on my craft room shelf with my secret stash of scrappy spending money, shhhhhh. I am starting the new year with an altered book. I removed the pages from a 1957 textbook called Vector Analysis and turned some of the pages (with good illustrations) into spiral origami delights. I was guided by Tomoko Fuse's book Spiral and thought the shape of these objects worked well with the title and content of the original book. What do you think? Enjoy. -Gina Altered Vector Analysis by Gina Pisello. Top view of spirals. Front view of the book. I used 3 different sizes of paper to create the spirals. Book partially closed. Tomoko Fuse's excellent book. Samples of the helices I used in the altered book.
This is quite an expanded version of my 'Gypsy Spells & Fortunes' Mixed Medial Fabric Books! ON SALE IN MY ETSY SHOP HERE... Measures 8x10" with lots of trims brimming over Inside: 16 Fortune Tags 4 Spells Cards 2 'Spells' Mini-Journals 9 Postcards 3 Gypsy Envelopes 10 Gypsy Tags 21 Internal Journaling Pages MANY pockets and tuck spots Journaling spaces on the back of EVERY tag or postcard So, I'm going to show you lots of photos, talk about the process, and hopefully INSPIRE you! FIRST of all, I'm going to show you the many, tags, journals, and envelopes that are tucked into many places! These are the 10 tags. Each has lines on the back for your thoughts. Many of these were digital purchases from Etsy, others are mine. It's fun to play with Photoshop to create EXACTLY what you're looking for! This is one of the little fold outs.... Even the 'Be your own kind of beautiful' opens up to a little journaling spot! As seen here.... Open the folder up.... And open up the right side. The center is a tuck spot for fortunes, spells, or tags. Here are two mini-journals..... LOTS! of pages in each book for your thoughts..... A sweet little envelope. Confession... I dropped a bit of glue on the left side, and the paper tore when I removed it. Thus...a great quote (covers all). Back side of same envelope....this is one of my favorite gypsy pictures! Photoshop is so much fun to play with! Here, I added a Gypsy Dancer to the front of this envelope. The envelopes are also made in Photoshop, using a template. Back side of envelope. This is a smaller one. The beautiful paper was from a digital 'bundle' on Etsy. Yet, another cute envelope, playing with Photoshop again.... These fortunes were found on Etsy as well. I enjoyed filling in the middle (with Photoshop) and writing a few of my own. The lovely 'Spell' cards... each has a broad journaling space on the back side. Now... all these 'postcards' I designed myself. So much fun! And now.... the full-Monty book..... The cover, with appliquéd rose, beaded fringe, and our sweet 'Gypsy Girl'.... Inside the first pages... You can see the vintage (over 100 years old) millinery netting from the front. On the left is a pocket with a fold out folder. Here is the little folder... On the left side.... The pocket on the left is from a vintage beaded vest. Worked great to hold some fortunes! On the right is a journaling page, with one of the sweetest 'messy girl' pictures ever! Paper clipped are several tags. Opening the little journal... there are many pages to write upon! (Fun journaling pages I created with Photoshop.) So much going on here... Great pocket on the left side, hosting a Gypsy envelope. Back journaling page... Just a closeup.... Sweet envelope.... Pocket placed upon a page designed by me.... A pocket on the left, for the two mini journals... the page on the right enthralls me! The butterfly, I painted myself, dyed the blue/purple ribbons... Actually, I hand dyed ALL the laces in this book! Mini journals.... So many postcards! Pocket, with more fortunes.... Final pages... pocket with envelope on the left... Journaling spot, and envelope on the right. Closeup... Not done yet! More pages with pockets, tags, Fortunes and Spells! The back side.... a collage of fabulous fabrics, laces, and hand-dyed trims.
