I love excavations, especially really old excavations. I think it goes back to grade school when the King Tut exhibition came to the Montreal Museum and our school arranged a field trip to see it. It wasn't so much that I wanted to wear the gorgeous necklaces and armbands excavated from that Egyptian "dig", but I wanted the thrill of being the first one to brush carefully at the surface dirt and see the glimmer of treasure just beneath my hands. To hold my breath, steady my hand and exercise excruciating patience so that I could carefully uncover the artifacts and lift them, undamaged, to light. To study every detail of these ancient artistic works would have brought me great delight. I think those memories spur a great portion of my passion for creating neo-artifacts. Ok, I can't brush away the detritous of centuries of time, but I can do my best to make it look like I have! Meet la Llàgrima Celeste. She was unearthed from an imaginary dig in Chichen Itza. From the wealth of the jewels and metals included nearby I have to conclude that she was an influential figure in her time, and from the art materials in the vicinity, I also imagine that she was an artist. Her backdrop suggests the lush surroundings of her habitat, the linear architecture of the advanced culture at that time and the adornment of an opulent, peaceful era. With thought of Modular Art Jewelry, her attachments allow me to easily suspend her from one of several neckchains.
What motivated me to make a CD? So Dan. Why don't you make a CD? That was Karen suggesting that after showing me the CD label she had created with some of my titles on it . That was how this project came about really. I suppose there is a time for things, and it was time for this to happen. My overwhelming sense is one of gratitude. For wherever these melodies came from, and for the gifts of these musicians and the great production of John Gilbert Greenburg . These songs are my life. They are a mix of sound, and style that are very easy to listen to. If you want to have it in the background for the dinner party or on the stereo going for a drive, you won't be disappointed. [email protected] The earliest songs are from the early seventies I trust that those of you who do listen will find something on my CD that moves you. Cheers, Dan Dan McMillan's CD Release Sold Out Dan McMillan's CD launch at the Italian Canadian Hall was a sold out event. It was over 20 years in the making and everyone was very pleased that this local talented musician made it. McMillan's family was present: his brother Marty and wife Vickie sister Linda and husband Kenn Whiteman, along with Laurie and Judy. His girl friend Karen Osberg made sure to video the whole event and his nieces Marla, Leah, Jana, Michelle, Jacklyn and Tracy assisted in the sale of the CD's. Also helping were Sandy Bouleau, Gordie Rhodes and Bill Hardisty. McMillan plays in the band Nite Shift and they also added their support and played the second set of music. The CD has all of McMillan's original songs and was recorded by John Gilbert who is also a musician and added his talent to the project. Clive Lauzon created the graphics for the CD and the following musicians contributed their talent: Rebecca Olsen, Guido, Andrew Schmidt, Chelsea Olsen, Mike Mallon, John Dryden and Erik Nystrom. Marty did the intro for McMillan and said the only thing missing was their parents Norman and Sylvia. McMillan did dedicate this CD to his parents and has their names on it. Part proceeds of the sale of the CD went to Fir Park Village for the new tubs and at the end of the evening there was $300 raised. Angie Blake of the Fir Park/Echo Village Foundation was very pleased that McMillan had thought of them for his donation and thanked him. McMillan then spoke about his songs and his regret that his parents couldn't be there for this release but felt they must be there in spirit. McMillan and his musicians then played each of the releases on the CD live. The CD contains wonderful tunes that have a very relaxing and calming effect on an individual. The musicians have made it a full-bodied experience and one that I'm sure everyone would enjoy. Personally, it was great to be able to actually hear the words and find that there wasn't any off-colour language in them. The instrumental tune, Karen's Surprise, is a lovely melody that bares no resemblance to any other tune that I've ever heard before. McMillan remembers his first excitement about music being in his parent's car with Elvis singing quot;Hound Dogquot; on the radio. He was jumping up and down on the back seat in time to the music and also singing at the top of his lungs. quot;My mom had a natural voice for singing and even though she didn't sing in public I remember her singing around our home. My Uncle Norm Nass played guitar and when I got my first guitar at age 12 he taught me how to play my first song quot;Spring Time in the Rockiesquot;. When McMillan was young he

PA Dutch Hex Signs have a rich history that dates back approximately 300 years. Folk art was a key part of the culture of the German settlers that came to Pennsylvania and after the 1830's farmers began expressing themselves on the sides of their barns by painting large colorful hex designs on them. The elements that make up these designs all had special meanings from the individual colors and star patterns to the birds or “Distelfinks”. These designs are believed to add blessings and good fortune to the home and family such as, fertility, luck, love, good health and many other well wishes. Inspired by a drive through our local Pennsylvania Dutch Country along the Berks County Hex Art Driving Tour, I designed this print as a modern interpretation of the hex sign. Based on actual folk art elements symbolizing "love" this piece was letterpress printed with three different runs using green, orange and dark red ink on Crane's 110 pound Pearl Lettra paper. The print measures 11" x 14" and is sold UNFRAMED. It will arrive packaged in a clear cello bag and rigid mailer for safe travel. Please contact me if you have any questions!
The history of the American Gypsy and Gypsy jewelry is exotic and has been a tale of intrigue. Gypsies or Roma people inhabited our nation before the English arrived. They came, the men, women and children, wearing their gold jewelry as they did throughout history. This jewelry is extremely rare. Why? Gold jewelry was security and brought good luck, acting against illness to the wearer. They would wear a jewel with the horsehoe pointed up so that good fortune would not flow out. Gypsies had neither bank accounts or stocks and bonds. They were nomadic people, always on the move. It was sensible and safe to keep their wealth on their bodies.Gypsy tradition was powerful and was against selling gold without dire need. All but one piece, that given to the oldest daughter, was buried with the deceased. During the Great Depression and the depression in the 1980's, gold was melted along with gold of the gypsies. Gypsy jewelry was solid 14kt gold, set with synthetic stones. They did not have the ability to authenicate stones. The motifs used in design are historic as well. There is twisted wire, star shaped flowers, engraved lines that suggest movement, sometimes rapid and direct and sometimes circuitous and squiggly. The horseshoe is prevalent. Barry Weber, an expert on jewelry of the American Gypsy can be seen on U Tube. He remarked: "Its rarity and beauty has pushed up the prices of Gypsy jewelry, making it much more valuable than the gold contained in each piece." Excellent condition.
