This is a read and match the vocabulary word worksheet to go along with All Those Secrets of the World by Jane Yolen. The list of vocabulary words was extracted from the "Five in a Row Volume 2" teacher's manual by Jane Clair Lambert.
Last week we began a story called All Those Secrets of the World by Jane Yolen. It's the story of a little girl whose father goes off to war. She and her family watch the ships leave the dock in Newport News, VA to go across the sea. Our lapbook cover and the ration book we are going to use this week The setting is Virginia of course! So, of course we need to re-visit the Virginia state bird and flower...sometimes I miss Virginia! We lived there for the first four years of our marriage. We've been studying some "famous" animals of the Chesapeake Bay...which undoubtedly must include the blue crab!! In case you haven't heard, they have filed for federal disaster relief for the blue crab industry- no more Maryland crab cakes for a bit. Although our story setting is VA, this native Marylander(I mean really native...I graduated from college and graduate school in Maryland institutions and taught in a Maryland school system in addition to growing up there of course!) has been focusing on Maryland's Bay! What can I say?? Today the kids set up this nice little Chesapeake Bay scene- throughout the book the theme is how large objects look small when they are far away and vice versa upon the father's return. Here the kids wanted to show the boats are smaller because they are far away. Hey Grandma...recognize the Bay Bridge? I realize that it's missing some suspension components. We'll be finishing up this week with some art work on horizons and the effects of oil spills on the surrounding ecology. Besides the rationing book, we're going to watch the Sound of Music with the kids- hey it has Nazis in it, right? We could do more, but somehow there is an air of "hurry up and finish" since the ants came to stay with us. Truman's Ant Farm awaits!

I'm way behind on my lapbook posts so I'll just do some serial posts to catch up. ;) I put this little lapbook together for the K/1 students while the older kids are doing Tapestry of Grace (Y4). There are 6 kids in the class, and our co-op meets for 2 hours once a week so the lapbooks need to fairly simple - but still fun, of course. So here we have a lapbook for All Those Secrets Of The World, by Jane Yolen. The cover is a Navy battleship since the father of the little girl in the story heads off to WWII on a Navy ship from Norfolk. We talked about the blessing of immediate and extended family. The little girl, her mom and younger siblings all go to live with the grandparents while the father is at war. The kids drew a picture of their immediate family. Below that is a pocket with 4 animals you'll find in the Chesapeake Bay. The kids cut and pasted the symbols of Virginia for this booklet. Below that is a picture of a farm with pockets labeled 'grow' and 'buy.' We talked about victory gardens and then sorted pictures of food into the pockets. If you're a fan of Jane Yolen, check back to see our lapbook for Owl Moon.

Have you heard? Finland, the land of lakes and forests, has been named the world's happiest country for the SIXTH year in a row! That's right, the World Happiness Report, which evaluates happiness across over 150 nations, has once again crowned Finland as the happiest of them all. While this may come as a surprise to some, those familiar with the Finnish way of life know that it is not just a coincidence. Finland is one of the most serene and secure countries in the world. This will really open your student's eyes to the country of North Korea. This PDF file has a short reading with questions as well as a link to the PBS special on the Secret State of North Korea along with video questions and 4 short response topics. This is a great activity for anyone learning about the country of North Korea or about different types of Governments especially communist governments. This can be done as a class or for homework since the students can have access to the video from any computer. For my Honors Level classes, I ask them to come up with ideas of ways to fix the problems in North Korea and we have a round table discussion about all of the options they come up with as well as the issues with those ideas. It really opens students' eyes to the complexity of politics within the world. Be the first to know about new products (all new products are free first 24 hours) and sales!!
