{Shameless plug for my GIVEAWAY} Sorry! But, here's a freebie for enduring it. My team and I had to teach "Sequence in Research" last week. Really? How do you do that? Remember funny co-worker {the Gone With the Wind one}, she suggested that we complete research on famous African Americans for Black History month. Then, we could use this to help them sequence their report. Brilliant! We began our research by going to several websites including Biography.com and Factmonster.com. Both were very valuable resources. Especially Factmonster. This week, we are using the information we gathered to create a three paragraph biography. The information has been great. I wanted a culminating activity that we can hang in the room {and take down the Conversation Heart stories...those pieces of candy are starting to look gross...}. So, this afternoon I created this poster so that my students can complete it while I'm gone {AGAIN} at another in-service tomorrow. The document on TpT and TN does not have a gray background. I only did that to be able to show you on here. I took a screen capture of it. Is that the best way to do this? If you are loading documents, how do you load a picture? Do you have another method? I'd love advice, so comment below everyone!

Photo Source: Vicky Moore Next Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day and, exploring/celebrating together the life of this important historical figure, provides a wonderful opportunity for discussing several important topics with your kiddos - character, diversity, passion, and perseverance among them! While there's nothing new about having your students write about their own dreams on MLK Day, we love how second grade teacher, Vicky Moore, of Traditions, Laughter and Happiliy Ever After and Mrs. Moore's Class, turned it into a craftivity that captures the powerful message of the holiday - the hand of friendship has no color! Have your students create the hand prints with paint or construction paper, then fill out the inside of the page with their dreams - dreams for themselves, dreams for their families, dreams for the community/school, dreams for the world, etc. We think this is a fabulous way for your students to make a personal connection with the holiday!

From time to time, one of you will send me this message: Why did you post a link to THAT article on ACEs Connection? What does it have to do with ACEs science, trauma-informed or resilience-building practices? So, I thought I’d riff on this a bit, especially since the ACEs movement seems to be growing to reach another level of development. We’ll soon be 25,000 strong on this social network! Although we still need to educate people about ACEs science, there’s a lot of foundational work being...

Teaching the Holocaust while reading a Holocaust-related novel can be challenging; there is so much information to be shared, but you don't want to the topic to become overwhelming, distant, or unreal to students. Analyzing photographs from the time period, assigning students the identity of a Holocaust victim, and a mini-lesson on nutrition are all ways to help students make personal connections with the Holocaust.

Performers can relate to the tension of a young married couple escaping from slavery to freedom. They can feel the excitement as Archimedes "discovers" the displacement of water and experience tons of other adventures! Each of the15 scripts in each book is accompanied by background information, extension activities (including literature connections), and discussion questions. 112 pages, softcover. Grades: 5-8.
