Using Amazon Alexa in the classroom So I decided to get an Amazon Alexa for my classroom. I figured the kids could use it for a variety of things but I didn't really see the amazing things they could do with it. Just make sure to set some parameters for behavior and usage before you do anything! The Basics So first set up some rules. My kids can use Alexa for ten minutes at a time, if their work is finished. They have specific pairs to work in. I have the sheet with optional activities posted and the pairs listed. Some basics are: Alexa, what is the definition for ______? Alexa, what is a synonym for ______? Alexa, roll the dice (pick a card, flip a coin). Alexa, how do you spell ______? Alexa, pick a number between ___ and ___. Alexa, set a timer for _____. Alexa Skills So there are third party developers who create apps to use with Alexa. There is so much to explore! Some of my kids' favorites are: Alexa, open the Magic Door. Alexa, launch Spelling Bee. Alexa, ask Math Mania to play. Alexa, open Curiosity. Alexa, ask Superheroes who ____ is. Alexa, open Knock, Knock. Alexa, open Cat (Dog, Dinosaur) facts. Alexa, Twenty questions. There is even a SkillFinder to help you find new skills. Just say "Alexa, open skill finder." and she'll help you out! So get one and try it out. How to use the Amazon Echo Dot Alexa in the classroom: activities for learning math skills, spelling, vocabulary, facts, science, and more!
Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. As an English teacher, I totally understand why voice-triggered “assistants” feels like something straight out of 1984. It might be too soon to use AI for anything confidential or sensitive. But as a technology nerd, I do see potential here for classroom use. “Hey Siri, remind me at 8:00PM to read Justin’s essay.” “Alexa, what’s the weather like outside?” “Hey Google, play my Classroom Writing playlist.” How I Started Recently, my husband and I have been dabbling with home automation, such as the Ring doorbell, a front door lock, and certain lights/outlets with timers. It’s particularly helpful to safely allow babysitters into our home (or those moments of “Did I lock the front door?”). Throughout this experience, I’ve been thinking a lot about what the potential for the classroom might be. Things to Know Up Front Before you buy (or use) any kind of automation technology and/or virtual assistants, you should know that… 1. You’ll need decent WiFi for certain Siri/Alexa/Google features. If your school doesn’t have reliable internet, you won’t be able to do as much. 2. You’ll want to think through rules and exceptions for use. I explain this more below, but you’ll have to consider putting away your devices during certain scenarios, such as tests (so students can’t ask it for an answer). 3. I’m not an expert! These are just my personal experiences. I’m not an expert at either device, and this post is not an ad. Trial #1: Alexa (Amazon Echo Dot) My husband and I were gifted an Echo Dot, and we primarily use it for home automation voice commands, like telling it to start the Roomba, turn the kitchen lights to 30% brightness, or lock the front door. I took one to my classroom as an experiment. Here’s how that went. Positives I really liked being able to ask Alexa questions. For example, it would be helpful, right before recess, to ask her, “Alexa, what’s the temperature outside?” or “Alexa, define egregious.” As an English teacher, the latter is pretty fun. You can ask Alexa to set a timer. My students and I like to play JEOPARDY! If you say “Alexa, good morning,” then she responds with not only a greeting but a trivia fact, such as informing you that it’s National Dictionary Day, which my homeroom students found amusing in the morning. I never set up any Amazon music with it, but in theory you could play music through it. If you bought the right outlets, you could have some fun with statements like “Alexa, turn the lights to 50%.” However, that would be pricey. Downsides She doesn’t always hear my voice across the room on the first try, such as when the classroom is too noisy or if music is playing nearby. I need to stand close enough to it and/or ask the classroom to quiet down. HOWEVER, I’m sure this would be an issue with other brands too, so that’s not necessarily a weakness of the Echo. I had ONE student who wasn’t mature enough to leave it alone and use it at the correct times. He always wanted to be near it, touch it, or ask it mildly inappropriate questions. I had to unplug it for a while for that reason. I recommend setting classroom norms and consequences if using any Alexa-enabled Amazon device. Trial #2: Siri (via Apple Watch) My iPhone has to stay out of sight during the school day, but I can wear an Apple Watch. Positives I love being able to customize the face of my Watch. I chose to have the date, time, weather, exercise rings, and to-do list at a glance. These enable me to quickly tell students at-a-glance if they need a coat to go outside or not. I most frequently use it in the classroom as a timer. My students were always amused whenever I said “Hey Siri, set a timer for 2 minutes”, and they’d excitedly start the task because somehow the Siri timer was more motivating than looking at the clock on the wall. It’s super helpful for me to read text messages and see phone calls. (For example, I NEED TO KNOW if my son’s daycare is calling, and having the Watch helps me know which messages I can ignore without getting out my cell phone in front of students.)I also use Siri to add reminders, either to the Reminder app or my Todoist app. If I’m standing next to a student’s desk and not near my computer, it’s extremely helpful to just say “Hey Siri, remind me at 8:00pm to update Google Classroom” or “Remind me to write a recommendation letter for Justin.” Downsides If there’s no WiFi, Siri has fewer capabilities. Occasionally, my Siri doesn’t listen the first time. That might just be my poor, heavily-used watch (ha) and not a product norm. Honorable Mention: Google I obsessively use Google Apps, but I haven’t purchased or tried any Google assistants yet. I imagine they would behave similarly to the pros and cons listed above. The Bottom Line In certain scenarios, having an “assistant” in the classroom feels like a helping hand. You just have to find the right one for your budget and what you want to accomplish. In my work with preservice teachers I find myself thinking a lot about the language of math and the models we use. Today I want to discuss the differences between the 100 board and 0-99 chart. In some circles, the 0-99 chart is also called a 100 board. In old-school language it is called a counting chart. I don't particularly like either of these names. Here's why. Even though 100 numbers are represented on the 0-99 chart, it does not extend to 100. To be called a 100 board, it should include this number. A counting chart should begin with the first counting number, which is 1. Zero is not a counting number. Therefore, a chart that begins with 0 should not be called a counting chart. I know these are really minor points, but they speak to the issue of precision and the language we use to describe mathematical tools. Beyond the semantic issues of what we call these charts, I have greater concerns about the use of 100 board (and the 120 board we now see to support Common Core standards). Our system of numeration is a base-10 system. This means we have 10-digits (0-9) and that every number can be made using one or more of these digits in combination. Ten and powers of ten are used to construct the system. Larger numbers are built by repeatedly bundling ten: 10 ones make one ten, 10 tens make one hundred, 10 hundreds make one thousand, and so on. In simpler language, every time we reach ten of a particular unit, it is regrouped and renamed. Here's what the tens column looks like on these charts. Note the placement of each. This is where my problem with the 100 board comes in. When we reach 10 ones on a hundred board, they still remain in the ones row (or column, depending on how the chart is arranged), but they belong at the beginning of the next decade. On a 0-99 chart all the numbers in a decade appear in the same row. For example, on a 100 board, the decade row for thirty begins with 31 and ends with 40. On a 0-99 chart, the decade for the thirty row begins with 30 and ends with 39. This representation on the 0-99 chart is much clearer and more accurately represents the way our number system operates. The other idea the 0-99 chart makes explicit is that zero is an even number. Even though we don't begin counting with 0, placing it on the board shows students that one less than 1 is 0 and that zero IS a number! On a 100 board we recognize numbers ending in 0 as even, but because zero does not appear, students don't view it as a number (just a placeholder) and often question its classification, wondering if it is even, odd, or neither. The 0-99 chart can help students overcome these misconceptions. In the final analysis, both charts can be used for developing skills in counting up and counting back, skip counting, finding one more/one less and ten more/ten less than a number, recognizing patterns, place value, addition, subtraction, finding multiples, prime numbers, and more. However, the 0-99 chart does this while helping students work within the structure of our base-10 system. Now that I've articulated the reasons that I feel the 0-99 chart is a better tool than the 100 board, here's a set of charts for you to use. One is a traditional 0-99 chart (oriented horizontally), while the other displays the numbers vertically. Download 0-99 Charts.
