How to make the best book cover EVER I started with an odd bit of polyester (cheap) felt around the size of a book cover. Then I used the QAYG assembly technique for covering the felt with fabric scraps. You can also use the top tabs on my homepage to locate this tutorial. I did not take a picture of the finished piece before cutting so I patched together this picture Then I used the book itself to mark the COVER to the correct size. This should be done on the wrong (felt) side not the right side like in this picture. Ask me how I know... After the felt is covered with cloth bits, it is time quilt. You can quilt in channels, echo quilting or free motion quilting but the cover will look better if quilted so do something. I decided to free motion with Madeirs metallic threads. In the process I use the cut off the fingers from rubber washing up gloves for traction on the fabric. I have tried everything. I have a drawer full of every kind of glove out there. I tried rubber jar opens - not bad. These fingers don't get in my way at all and I still have my thumb and first finger naked to pinch or grab. Works for me!! Finished quilting Since I failed to document this in pictures, I went back and "posed" some pictures. DO NOT get these pictures confused with making the black lining. I used black because it was easy to see the marks. So now, on your finished COVER, you will mark the size of your book like this: Lay your book on the COVER which is wrong side up and mark around the top, right side and bottom. Then carefully stand the book up without moving it and mark the center section. This is important. Then lay the book on the other side and finish marking the COVER which is WRONG side up It will look like this (above) with the marks on the wrong side of the COVER Below are the marks on a piece of black so you can see them more easily Also in this picture is a "Sewline" chalk marker from Japan. Expensive, yes, but so worth the money. The chalk which is actually some sort of ceramic I think also comes in colors. I have found this chalk pencil invaluable and well worth the high price. The marks are easily erased when you are done. Now here is the part that makes this the BEST BOOK COVER EVER Place the COVER facing up on your table. Take a piece of fabric for the lining on top and cut it the same height but about 5" wider. A good gauge is the width of the spine plus 4". In the picture below I am pretending this is one piece of fabric even though it is cut in three sections. The height is the same and it is about 5" wider than the cover. Then cut the single piece of liner (black in the picture) into 3 sections. Take the right and left sections and make a small hem on one side. These hems will run along the spine. This will be clear in the photo below. Lay the hemmed side on the COVER right sides together (cover facing up and hemmed sides face down on the cover like this: Now this can be the tricky part. Take the third piece of fabric with 4 raw edges and lay it over the center of the book. It goes on top of the side sections. Pin enough so this all stays together while you sew it. Sew all around all four sides - YES, all FOUR sides. As you approach the corners stop about 2 stitches short and rotate 45 degrees and sew the corners on an angle. Remember I chalked the outline on the wrong side but the photo is a good one to see the angled stitch Sewn all the way around all 4 sides and if I'd marked the felt side this would be more centered. Clip to about a scant 1/4" Now comes the turning which will be easier to understand through photos. With the lining facing up, lift the center section. Reach inside the piece and grab the side seam. My hand is grabbing the right side seam. Turn the piece inside out. See below You can easily see the right and left flaps into which you will slide the front and back book covers. Next poke out the corner (do not use pointy scissors-smile) and roll the edges and press (iron). This book cover fits the book so tightly that I open the book all the way with the two covers touching each other to slip inside the cover. I think (my opinion) that this is the best book cover ever for these reasons. the inside of the cover is covered with cloth. center opening of cover does not expose the wrong side of the cover and cover fits the book perfectly snug Please try at least ONE and then you will be hooked. This is the best book cover EVER and your friends and family will be amazed at your cleverness and artistic abilities (applause, applause) and everyone will be clamoring for you to make them their own cover. These make great journals for gifts.

Good morning, Crafters! I have a sweet, summertime tutorial for you today! If you are trapped inside with the air conditioning roaring, then it's the perfect time to whip up this little cutie! My monthly mini showcases the Authentique Summertime Collection! This is the perfect collection for these hot, humid, end-of-summer days! This summer collection comes with six different sheets and 12 patterns, However, the collection has TWO sheets of cut-aparts, Summertime Five and Summertime Six. If you purchase the paper pad, you get four of each pattern. That is plenty of paper to make this mini album! This mini is 5" tall and 3 1/2" wide (similar to the Meadow Mini Album, shared HERE). There are three pages, with lots of fold-outs and flaps, plus TWO waterfall sections! Let's get started on the tutorial. Cut two pieces of medium weight chipboard to 5" x 3 1/2". Cut one piece of chipboard to 5" x 1". Trim dark blue cardstock to 7" x 10 1/4" and attach the chipboard pieces to the cardstock as shown above. Make sure to maintain a 1/8" gap between the spine piece and the cover pieces of chipboard. Trim the cardstock corners at an angle and attach double-sided adhesive to the tabs. Wrap the chipboard as shown. Gently fold the covers while scoring in the 1/8" gutter (or channel) between the spine and the covers. Trim decorative paper to fit over the center spine section. Do this BEFORE adding your hinge mechanism. DO NOT add paper to your inside covers until AFTER you add your hinge mechanism. Create a hinge mechanism from dark blue cardstock. Cut the cardstock to 4 1/4" x 4 1/2". (The 4 1/4" measurement is the height of the hinge.) Score on the longer side at: 1", 1 1/8", 1 3/8", 1 5/8", 2", 2 1/4", 2 1/2", 2 7/8", 3 1/8", 3 3/8", 3 1/2". This will make three hinges that are 1/4" all with a 3/8" space between hinges. Attach the hinge to the spine of the book. Line up the scored 1/8" "gutters" on your hinge to the gutters on your album. Gently burnish and fold all your score lines. Trim decorative paper to add to the inside of your covers. Trim three pieces of dark blue cardstock to 4 7/8" x 3 3/8" and add one piece to each hinge. Glue these "base pages" to the left side of each hinge. (Don't worry. Your decorative papers will cover the other side of the hinge.) Create a waterfall section for the front cover. Trim the dark blue cardstock to 4" x 3 1/8". Score each piece at 1/4" from the top edge. Use a corner rounder to round the bottom edges. Cut four waterfall pages. Attach the first to the top edge of the dotted paper by the 1/4" tab. Add each waterfall page just under the previous page. Add magnets to keep the waterfall closed. Cut a piece of dark blue cardstock to 4 7/8" x 3 3/8" and score on the long side at 1/4" from the right edge. Round the left-hand corners. Attach the 1/4" tab to the left edge of the first base page. Cut a second piece of dark blue cardstock to 4 7/8" x 3 3/8" and score on the long side at 1/4" from the left edge. Round the right-hand corners. Attach the 1/4" tab to the right edge of the first base page. Add magnets as desired. Close the left flap, then the right flap to finish the first base page. Turn the page and work on the BACK of the first base page. Cut a piece of dark blue cardstock to 4 5/8" x 3 1/8" and score on the bottom at 1/4" from the edge. Round the top corners. Attach the 1/4" tab to the bottom edge of the BACK of the first base page. Add a pocket to the bottom of the second base page. Cut dark blue cardstock to 2 3/4" x 3 7/8" and score on three sides at 1/4" from the edges. Fold on the score lines and attach the pocket to the page as shown. Flip the second base page over and work on the BACK. Cut a piece of dark blue cardstock to 4 7/8" x 5 1/2" and score on the long side at 2" and 5 1/4" from the left edge. Round the left-hand corners. Attach the 1/4" tab to the left edge of the second base page. Cut a second piece of dark blue cardstock to 4 7/8" x 3 3/8" and score on the long side at 1/4" from the left edge. Round the right-hand corners. Attach the 1/4" tab to the right edge of the second base page. Add magnets as desired. Close the right flap, then the accordion fold the left flap to finish the second base page Add a pocket to the bottom of the THIRD base page. Cut dark blue cardstock to 2 3/4" x 3 7/8" and score on three sides at 1/4" from the edges. Fold on the score lines and attach the pocket to the page as shown. Flop the page and work on the BACK of the last page. Cut a piece of dark blue cardstock to 4 7/8" x 3 3/8" and score on the long side at 1/4" from the right edge. Round the left-hand corners. Attach the 1/4" tab to the left edge of the third base page. Cut a second piece of dark blue cardstock to 4 7/8" x 3 3/8" and score on the long side at 1/4" from the left edge. Round the right-hand corners. Attach the flap to the right edge of the first base page. Add magnets as desired. Close the left flap to finish the last base page. Create a waterfall section for the inside back cover. Trim the dark blue cardstock to 4" x 3 1/8". Score each piece at 1/4" from the top edge. Use a corner rounder to round the bottom edges. Cut four waterfall pages. Attach the first to the top edge of the dotted paper by the 1/4" tab. Add each waterfall page just under the previous. Add magnets to keep the waterfall closed. Now your mini book is ready to decorate! I trimmed a piece of white, adhesive-back canvas to cover the spine of my book. Then, I added the yellow and white dotted paper to the front and back covers. I kept the cover simple by adding a word grid sticker and a bit of pretty ribbon. (The sticker is VERY OLD and I have no idea where it's from!) I double-matted the sticker and added it to a bit of scrap chipboard before gluing it to the cover. I found the cute crab button in my stash and thought he would like to end his days decorating the bow! I used a banner die to cut out the spine decor. I used a Tim Holtz brad to dangle some charms from the spine. (I have a bin of charms and a bin of beads, most of which have been with me since the early 1990's! I add to them from time to time, so I really don't remember where these particular items came from!) I added the fun Summertime papers to the inside sections of my book, and then just added a few stickers and other bits and bobs to decorate each page. The Summertime cut-aparts are the perfect size for my pages... and to fit into the pockets! I have no idea how long I've had some of these stickers! I almost never reach for stickers, but I am happy I still had these in my stash as they worked perfectly for this little book! I found clear stickers, and 3-D sticker, and word art...just a treasure trove! With TWO waterfall features, there is a lot of space for photos and journaling! I've noticed lately that I've been getting quite a few hits on my blog from Pinterest... from a really old post about some things I made for a craft fair! Ha! ... it was such a long time ago, but the ideas are still quite cute. Well, based on one of those crafts, I made a tutorial( a year or so ago) about how to cover a photo mat with fabric. Today, I'd like to show you how to cover an old book in fabric... similar to another craft on that ancient post :) MATERIALS enough cotton fabric to cover the book you've chosen... I love using vintage fabric for old books an old book, preferably one that has a blank cover, as some titles or illustrations can show through spray glue -nothing beats 3M Super 77 found at Hobby Lobby or hardware stores a scissor - one you don't mind getting glue on Mod-podge small foam brush (you don't need a knife... I don't know why I put that in there, Ha!) 1. Lay out your book and cut a rectangle of fabric larger than the size of your book... 1 to 2 inches larger on all sides (you might want to iron your cut fabric at this point if it's creased or wrinkly). 2. Spray the back side of the fabric and the outside of the book with spray glue (not in the house!). Make sure you get a good coat... and don't forget the spine of the book. It works well to clip the piece of fabric to a wire hanger with clothes pins and stand the book, spine up, like a tent to spray. 3. Next, carefully lay your fabric out (glue side up!) and place your closed book on one end. Press book firmly down, checking to make sure the fabric is smooth and securely adhered to the book cover. 4. Carefully flipping the book over, while making sure the the spine keeps contact with the fabric, wrap the other side of the fabric around the front of the book. Once again, being careful to make sure there are no air bubbles or wrinkles in the fabric. Your book should look like this at the end of step 4. 5. Cut off all 4 corners of the fabric, leaving about 1/8 of an inch margin between the corner and the edge of the cut. 6. Make two cuts in the fabric by the spine. The cuts should line up with where the cover creases. Do this on both ends of the book. 7. Smooth the fabric over the edges of the cover on all sides. Pay special attention to the corners, making sure to pull the fabric tightly over the edges. Use Mod Podge if necessary to make sure the flaps are adhered completely. Your books should look like this at the end of step 7. 8. Add a very thing layer of Mod Podge to the left over tabs of fabric on either side of the spine. Then using a letter opener or a butter knife, push the tabs down into the little gap between the cover and the binding. 9. Add a little Mod Podge to the the corners of the book and use your fingers to push down the fabric (if necessary) to make a clean looking corner and keep them from fraying in the future. Let dry and display... :) YOU'RE GOOD TO GO! Blessings,
