Jesus-christ en Croix entre les Deux Larrons
This etching from the original work after Albrecht Durer features Jesus Christ the Crucified and is wonderfully displayed in this 1816 etched bookplate. It is from William Young Ottley's book, An Inquiry into The Origin And Early History of Engraving Upon Copper and In Wood, with An Account of Engravers And Their Works, From The Invention of Chalcography By Maso Finiguerra, to the Time of Marc Antonio Raimondi. A note on the source: William Ottley compiled a small collection of engravings and published them in his book History of Engraving which was published in the early 19th century. The etchings were of the highest quality and represent the works of some of the greatest artists of the past. Many were produced by the author using the original plates.

Albrecht Dürer [German Northern Renaissance painter, printmaker, engraver, mathematician, and theorist. 1471 – 1528] Biography: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albrecht_D%C3%BCrer ... This etching is held in many museums throughout the world. Dürer created is after his first trip to Italy in 1494 and is the only plate on which signed his full name. Dürer’s mastery of engraving is show in his rendering of human skin, snake scales, animal fur, leaves and tree bark. Adam holds a branch of the Tree of Life (represented by the mountain ash), while Eve has broken off a branch of the forbidden Tree of Knowledge (here shown as a fig tree). Dürer's fascination with ideal form manifests Adam and Eve in nearly symmetrical idealized poses. Under the influence of Italian theory, Dürer was drawn to the idea that the perfect human form corresponded to a system of proportion and measurements. Near the end of his life he wrote several books codifying his theories. Four of the animals represent the medieval idea of the four temperaments: the cat is choleric, the rabbit sanguine, the ox phlegmatic, and the elk melancholic. Before the Fall, these humors were held in check, controlled by the innocence of man; once Adam and Eve ate from the apple of knowledge, all four were activated, all innocence lost. ___ Light restoration by plumleaves
Dürer’s personification of the melancholic temperament in his most famous print, Melencolia I, showed a brooding, inactive figure who sits under an hourglass, weighed down by her own thoughts and surrounded by the unused tools of creative endeavour and scientific research. Dürer’s representation was based upon the belief current in Renaissance humanist circles that melancholy was associated not so much with depression and madness as with exceptional creativity.
