DIY Budget Friendly Air Return Vent Cover : How to DIY a decorative air vent return cover easily and on a budget
DESCRIPTION: Handmade Return or Supply Air Vent Cover. This will come as one piece: a Decorative Outside Cover (See photos for details) with a Vintage design. Since our covers are not louvered or angled in any way, we recommend painting the duct opening a dark color to help conceal anything behind the cover. Our decorative covers are made for supply or return vents and are made for systems with the filter built-in to the system itself rather than at the return opening. Our vent covers DO NOT have a slot to hold a filter in place and would have to be unscrewed each time the filter needed changed. We do not recommend using our covers for floor vents as they have a lip on them and will not lay flat on the floor. If you have young children or pets, we do not recommend hanging these low on the wall due to the decorative design being sharp. MEASURING TIPS: Replacing an existing cover? We recommend measuring your existing cover to make sure the new cover you ordered will fit (keep in mind the 1/8" possible difference noted above). Our vent covers are measured by total outside dimensions. New construction? Measure at least 1" all the way around the duct opening (making the total outside dimensions of the vent cover size 2" larger than the duct opening). SIZE: Our cover sizes are based on TOTAL OUTSIDE DIMENSIONS of the cover itself. Dimensions may vary by 1/8" smaller or larger due to the way the sides are bent. We recommend measuring your existing cover to make sure the new cover you ordered will fit (keep in mind the 1/8" possible difference noted above). Our vent covers are measured by total outside dimensions. If you do not see your size listed we do offer custom sizes. Just send us a message for more details. COLOR: Raw steel will be dark gray in color and will vary slightly from piece to piece. If clear coat is chosen, we will apply a matte clear sealant to help prevent from rusting. The clear coat will help keep the look of the raw metal but will just add a layer of protection. The raw metal is a very dark gray that could have different variation, scratches in the metal and patina throughout. If you are wanting more of a consistent - clean look, we recommend choosing one of our color options. HANGING: Requires 2-8 screws to hang depending on vent size. Screws are included with your order. Hole placement will be determined and will vary from size to size. Most of the time they are in all 4 corners of the cover. RETURNS / EXCHANGES: There is a 25% restocking fee and return shipping is the responsibility of the buyer. Simply Inspired Co. LLC is not responsible for any damage due to faulty hanging or surface damage (such as discoloration, fading, rust marks, etc.) caused by weather elements and/or high moisture areas in/on all interior and exterior surfaces. Buyer assumes responsibility for proper hanging of the product. PROCESSING TIME: Up to 3 weeks. Thanks for looking!

A decorative return air vent grille, why not? Do you ever start a small task and it turns into a really large makeover job? Oh, just me, ok!? lol! I decided to clean our return air vents and then this happened! I gave the entire hallway a fresh coat of paint and then we made this vent grille to doll it up a bit. I've had this idea pinned for ever, but now its finally come to our hallway in real life! Remember here when I showed you How to Clean Your Return Air Vent? If you haven't read that post, hop on over and see what could be lurking in your wall! Anywho, this is what our vent used to look like, now let's get on to the new vent grille. This is the decorative aluminum sheet we picked out. When I saw the name of the design I got all excited because ya know...Clover House...cloverleaf...yeah, imma a weirdo! Here's the link to it at Lowe's, but as I was doing my research I found it on Amazon for a cheaper price with FREE shipping! Darn my luck sometimes, oh well! This 2ft x 3ft sheet will make three (3) vent grilles which is what we have all in total! Perfect! Let's make the frame now. The overall size of our DIY grille is 12-1/2" x 24". We used some 1 x 6 scrap wood that was cut down to a width of 1-1/2" wide pieces. Cut 2 @ 24" long and 2 @ 9-3/8" long. We used our Kreg Jig Jr. to make the screw holes, these are called pocket holes. This is not required, but it makes the grille lay flat to the wall this way. The manual that comes with it gives specific instructions on how to use it. Its a very handy tool to have. You'll need some wood glue and this Gorilla wood glue in my opinion, is the best and its a vital tool when wood working. Getcha some! Add a small amount of wood glue to the joints before screwing them together. Be sure to wipe excess glue off before it dries. We used a 1-1/2" long wood screw to hold each joint together. My honey used an adjustable woodworking clamp to hold the frame together so it would stay straight while he got all the screws into the joints. Next he smoothed out all the rough spots with our Black and Decker Mouse Sander, another handy tool for woodworking! And a step I failed to document is that I filled in all the cracks and holes with DAP DryDex Spackling and nail hole filler. This stuff goes on pink and dries white so you know when its ready for paint...so cool! Next you'll need a pair of metal nippers. Ours are old and plain, but they got the job done. We used these to cut the aluminum sheet to size. Lay your finished frame on the metal to get a measurement. Mark a line using a black sharpie. Cut along your line using the metal nippers. Lay the cut piece on the frame and trim as needed. Grab your staple gun and attach the metal to the frame. Now its all ready for paint. I used a glossy white spray paint. I applied three thin and even coats making sure to let them dry at least 30 minutes in between coats. I ended up propping the whole thing up on top of an empty cat litter box so I could get to all the sides and edges. After my third coat of paint, I let it dry over night to make sure it was good and cured before we handled it. After I removed the original vent grate from the wall, this is what we were left with. Please see my post about cleaning the vent area in the link up above. You want to make sure the entire area is clean before proceeding. The darkness of the old original sheet rock paper was really showing through our new vent grille. I didn't care for it much, so I used some of my white trim paint (glossy) to paint all the visible areas of the vent opening. I thought this type of paint would be easier to clean in the future. Now its a little less "glowing" and I think it blends in better. Now for installing the new vent grille. My honey held the cover up to the opening to align it were it needed to sit. Next, using his drill and a small drill bit, he made a pilot whole on either side of the vent grille. He drilled all the way through to the wall so he had a marked spot to add the wall anchor. We added the plastic wall anchor because there was not a stud to hold the screw good and sturdy. After a bit of touching up of the paint here and there as well as dabbing some white paint on the screw heads, it was all finished. There it is, nice and pretty and showing off its lovely little clover grille! I think it turned out great! I spy two doors that still need to be painted, but let's be honest, the whole room needs paint!! The other two vents to replace are in the room with the non-painted doors and the other one is in our room to the left. All in good time though. *wink* Before you go, I'm thinking about a little makeover for the kitchen. Please take a look at my idea board right here. Let me know if you have any favorites because I'm having a hard time choosing! THIS JUST IN: Did you know you could use COUPONS on Amazon? "I WISH I had floor vents just so I could do this," said a reader when she saw this clever trick: This is so simple! While we love our air conditioning in the South, floor vents and air return vents can be eye sores...
Our luxury wood vent covers are made of solid New Zealand Pine and are already primed so you can easily paint to match your walls or trim. Each vent includes a 3-inch (3") deep metal box that holds a 1" inch standard air filter and locks the vent cover in place with our patented design. HOW TO DETERMINE YOUR CORRECT SIZE: Remove your current metal return air vent. Do not measure your current metal return air vent; this will result in ordering the wrong size MEASURE YOUR DRYWALL OPENING: Start by carefully measuring the width, then the height (W x H) Is your opening at least 1/8” larger than the size you plan to order? Example: a 20 w x 30 h requires a duct opening of 20 1/8 wide x 30 1/8 high. CHECK THE DEPTH OF YOUR OPENING: Make sure you have at least a 3-inch (3”) deep clearance inside the duct ( Confirm by removing the metal or filter) Review our sizes to select the one that fits: Sizes are listed by width first, then height (W x H) Choose your size width (W) Left to Right first, then height (H) Up and Down Order using width x height (W x H). EXAMPLE: a 20 wide x 25 high is a vertical vent with the louvers 20" in comparison, a 25 wide x 20 high is a horizontal orientation with the louvers 25" Confirm fit: Did you use the right orientation W x H? Is your opening 1/8” larger than the size you plan to order? For example, if you plan to order a 20 W x 30 H vent, your duct opening should be at least 20-1/8" W x 30-1/8" H AND 3” deep all the way around; Our vents have a 2 inch wide outer wood frame, similar to a "picture frame" Make sure that there is enough space free from outside obstructions like baseboards, door jams or decorative trim. Place your order! HELPFUL HINTS: Orientation Matters! Our sizes go Width (W) x Height (H) The slats or louvers go the Width measurement ( left to right ). Spring cleaning? Why yes, I believe I will! And I have been for the past several weekends. This is our freshly cleaned return air vent in the hall way. It wasn't always this pretty! Its a little bent up and mis-shapen (probably from cat crashes), but it looks way better than before I started! One day I plan on changing it out for one like THIS. We just have to find the cool hardware cloth first! UPDATE: We found the hardware cloth! Look right here to see what we made. Don't be scared, its just a really filthy dirty vent. I'm a bit embarrassed to show these next few pictures, but I felt like I needed to share with you so you can go check your vent and make sure its a healthy vent too! A short story. We have three cats. They run through our house like maniacs! On occasion one of them misjudges and ends up running into things, like vents. The other day I heard a loud boom and went to investigate and this is what I found. Um, Eeeeeew! Gross! One screw on the left just fell out of the drywall and was hanging there, the other one on the right, firmly holding on. Oh screwdriver? Where are you? This is what I found when I removed the vent! WOW! That is a lot of dirty dust bunnies! Or should I say dirty dust kitties? It was a good inch thick on the bottom. Oh shop vac? Where are you? This has got to go NOW! I vacuumed all the "kitties" out of there and even found several pieces of dry wall. Really? Messy contractors! LOL! Next I broke out the Clorox wipes and cleaned the wall where the vent had been resting. Don't mind all the scrapes and bumps, we will be painting in here soon I hope! NOTE: DO NOT use Kaboom bathroom cleaner on your metal vent! Not good as you can see! I'm sure soap and warm water with a scrub brush would have done much better. I headed to our paint shelves in the shop and oh look! A vent repair kit! I primed the whole thing with white primer (a little extra on the area where I removed the paint while scrubbing) and then when that was dry I sprayed two thin coats of white gloss over the entire thing. I even painted the screw heads too! Aaaah! So much better! I told my honey that now that the vent is all beautiful and white, the wall and base board looks really awful and ugly! He said, "It'll just have to wait until the kitchen is done first"! You are so right honey! UPDATE: We've just added our new DIY Decorative Return Air Vent Grille to this space. Check it out here.
