22nd September 2013 Jamal's 10th birthday Jamal was turning 10. For me this was a huge milestone party... my first child reaching double figures:) We decided since he loved making things and experimenting we would design a Mad Scientist Party. There was a children's market coming up in the holidays so we saved up and went to the market knowing we would find lots of experimental kits. We came home with a car full of things and its didn't cost much at all. I ordered off the internet some Test Tubes, Beakers and Petri Dishes from a science shop. A lovely lady we know gave us lab coats, protective footwear and lots of gloves. Invitation Guests arriving Jamal's best friends came to the party. They loved being greeted by Jamal and being given lab coats, protective footwear, safety glasses and personalised name tags. Name Badges, I didn't add actual photos as they had the kids last names on them. We used the periodic table to personalise and make each name tag different from each other. A great learning tool. Each name tag was pinned to their lab coat. Then the Fun begins.... lots of Experiments! First we started by making Lava Cups. These were great and actually worked :) They reminded me of the old Lava lamps you used to buy. We had so much fun making Elephant Toothpaste. While the rain stopped for a brief moment we made the most of some experiments outside. First Mentos and Coke Geysers then we made some Smoke Drums A short video clip of two of the Mentos and Coke Geysers going off :) Smoke Drums Smoke Drums were made with regular garden buckets. I cut out a hole in the bottom and covered the top with shower caps. The experiment I found on the internet used a shower curtain but shower caps fitted perfectly and were only $1.00 for three. The buckets were filled with smoke from our smoke machine. When the kids tapped the shower cap rings of smoke came out. The smoke was strong enough to knock paper cups of the table. So much fun they were lining up for more smoke :) Another indoor experiment with Dry Ice. The place we got local ice from wasn't open in the weekends. We brought 5kg (thankfully they gave us a lot extra). When we got home Friday night it weighed just over 8kg, by Saturday night we had lost over 3kg. We were very lucky to have lots left for fun on Sunday at the party. The kids made exploding gloves. They put a few pieces of dry ice in a glove and knotted it, put it in a warm bowl of water. After a few mintues the glove had expanded and was huge, after a few minutes there was a huge bang! They also put dry ice in a bowl, rubbed dish liquid around the edge of the bowl and pulled a small rag over the bowl, huge dry ice bubbles formed. Potato and Lemon Clocks Next was Potato and Lemon clocks. We split into two teams and one made a clock out of Potatoes and one out of Lemons. Both clocks were a working success. Lastly Tornado in a bottle using a tornado tube, two empty bottles, water, dish liquid and some food colouring Food I love planning party food using a theme. We had green slime cupcakes, Popping candy in test tubes, Pizza Particles, Molecule Cookies, Atoms (Chocolate Lollies), Radio Active Jelly in Petri Dishes, Bacteria bites (Mini Savouries), Laboratory Mice, Brains and lots more. We used dry ice in the drinks and in beakers and test tubes to give off a real science feeling. You mix the colours together to make different colours. Seven. How did *that* happen? My "baby" is seven. *sigh* Ok, thoughts of baby blankets, soft fuzzy baby hair, tiny baby clothes aside, it's time for my boy to grow up (if he insists. Which he does.). And this "big" boy is into what most "big" boys (and lots of actual big boys) are into... Star Wars! So today we'll celebrate in a galaxy far, far away welcome, padawan I was inspired by Jennifer S on Catch My Party to make these. Who wouldn't love to get their very own lightsaber in the mail? I love how the party info is printed right on the back. I made mine simpler in front, as I had a LOT to make. Want to make your own? eat, you must For lunch we enjoyed hot dogs from the "Hutt Dog" station. Snacks included Wookie Cookies, Carbonite Jell-O and more. The Hutt Dog station! Not only were our guests given lots of toppings to choose from, we also gave some Star Wars themed ideas on how to prepare their dogs. Feel free to print the Clone Dogs, "Solo" Dog, "Chilly" Dog and Swamp Dog signs for yourself! My signs are displayed in Ikea frames. The water bottles are covered with glitter paper (it's from a roll of wrapping paper I got at Michaels). Then I got printable Storm Trooper labels from Clean & Scentsible for them. The Padawan Popcorn boxes can also be printed here. It's a great versitle little favor box! You can print it on any color paper to match your party. If you own a personal cutter like the Cricut, here's an SVG file of the box. My large "Hutt Dogs" sign was cut with my Cricut but the small food signs can be printed here. We enjoyed some Bow-Ba Fett Pasta (Ree Drummond's Kid-Friendly Pasta Salad made with bow-tie pasta). The pasta is in cups purchased from TomKat Studios. I chose them because they're lined with plastic so the dressing wouldn't leak through. We also had Princess Lays (potato chips) and more hot dog toppings. Stephen's cake and cupcakes were inspired by Takes the Cake. The letters, stars and lightsabers were made from fondant. The silver was all touched up with silver Pearl Dust to give them some sparkle. The Vader-Ade is simply red Gatorade. The Yoda Soda is green Hawaiian Punch and 7up with some green sherbert on top. I made ice cubes from both the Gatorade and Hawaiian Punch to keep the drinks cold without watering them down. Those fantastic C3PO Oreos pops were inspired by Kitchen Fun with My 3 Sons. They were a big hit! The Cloud City Pops are simply marshmallows on lollipop sticks, dipped in a milk/confections sugar mixture then into blue Pearl Nonpareils. The sticks are actually paper straws purchase, again, from TomKat Studio. Carbonite Jell-O. How awesome is that? I've seen it in a few places online but I'm going to give the credit to the first person I saw use it. Carli from Dimple Prints. Just fabulous! She also inspired the Death Star Krispies we'll see next... ....made with Cocoa Krispies, these things were SO yummy! I tried to add a little "sparkle" to them with edible glitter, but it just doesn't really show up. The jarred snacks up top include, Hans Rollos, Ewok Snacks (Teddy Grahams), Thermal Detonators (Whoppers) and Lightsabers (Pixy Stix). Ah, the Wookie Cookies. How can you not love that face? The brilliant mind that brought up C3PO Oreos, also brought us these fantstic cookies! Thanks Jill over at Kitchen Fun with My 3 Son! The Obi-Wan Kabob-ies were inspired by these from Sweet Cakes Crafts. The Tie Fighters were inspired by Clean & Scentsible (who also brought us the free Storm Trooper water bottle printables!). They're made from Oreo Crisps (the 100 calorie packs) and mini marshmallows. Another huge hit! padawan entertainment Even Padawan need some down-time! Ours had lots of fun activities to choose from. Make Your Own Lightsaber: Papertowel tubes, foam stickers, markers and balloon-animal style balloons made up this station. It was the BIGGEST hit! After decorating their papertowel tube, a grown-up slid a deflated balloon in and blew it up. Instant lightsaber! I got this idea from Jennifer S over at Catch My Party. (You'll remember, she also inspired my invitation.) Stellar Play Dough: Homemade play dough, with some added glitter (for that stellar effect), rollers and cutters made up this crafty station. This fantastic idea came from Tradewind Tiara (as do a few addition ideas you'll see coming up!). I used these jars for the play dough. And a word of advice on making the play dough, don't add the glitter too far in advance. I made the play dough about 2 weeks before the party and the glitter all dissolved! We tossed more in just before the festivities. Make Your Own R2 Unit: Cut almost entirely with my Cricut, we had blank R2 units with an assortment of cardstock shapes to add. I made one for display to help as inspiration. Feel free to download the PNG or SVG of the R2 unit for yourself! Thanks to Sweet Craft Cakes for this great idea! They're also to thank for our "Clone Army" idea below. The young Jedi Apprentice practiced their blaster training (aka: Nerf guns) on these poor, unexpecting "Clones". That'll teach them for crashing our party! what's a jedi apprentice to wear? Our dress-up station had it all! Character masks, Leia headbands and, (of course!) Jedi robes. Those absolutely fantastic masks were made by etsy seller BessiePooh. You can see all of her wonderful creations here. The Leia headbands were inspired by Tradewind Tiara (see, I told you you'd see them mentioned again!) She gives great step-by-step instructions on how to make them. The glue gun burns these babies gave me were totally worth it! Lastly, the Jedi robes. I made mine from "chocolate" broadcloth. I cut strips measuring about 16" wide by 48" long (adjust your length based on the size of your attendees). Then I cut a hole in the center for the kids heads. I then cut 44" strips of tan broadcloth for the belts. The ream was 44" wide, which is why I chose that number. *wink* Cute, aren't they? become a jedi, you will Having attended training himself this past summer, Stephen, now a Jedi, wanted to train his Padawan in the Jedi arts. (How cool is this photo!? Hubby took it with his new iPhone 5.) You never know when the dark side will try to tempt you, best be prepared. *wink* He stood before his friends, now dressed in their Jedi robes and armed with... you guessed it, lightsabers! These foam lightsabers can be found all over the internet at just about every Star Wars party out there. Their origin, impossible to find. Made from foam pool noodles, cut in half, mine are wrapped with 3 rows of silver duct tape and topped off with strips of black electrical tape. The original creator of these things: a genius. 7 year old boys LOVE to beat on each other. And believe you me, they did just that! Some double-fisted. Best idea ever. After their training, each new Jedi received a "graduate" badge. I put them into vertical badge holders hung from lanyards. The kids loved that they were each personalized. Here's a blank one for you to work with. All that practice (and Jedi training) paid off, because we *were* visited by Mr. Dark Side himself, Darth Vader! After a demonstration from Stephen, each new Jedi "battled" Darth Vader. He was a gracious loser, as he posed for this fantastic photo with them all afterwards. smile and say "chewy" What's a party without a photo booth? And who wouldn't want their photo with the infamous Darth Vader!?! (maybe a newly minted 7 year old, unaware that it's just his Papa in costume, that's who) Set against a black paper backdrop, covered with silver stars, party-goers had a board full of favorite quotes from the movie, along with their favorite masks to pose with. Next on the birthday to do list was the bag to put goodies in for the kids who attend. I found several ideas on Pinterest, again I figured I could do this myself. So I went to work on making these bags and cheap as I could. What you need: White Bag (3pk - Dollar Tree $1) Red Poster Board (1 Sheet - Dollar Tree $1) Black Poster Board (1 Sheet - Dollar Tree $1) White Cardstock Paper (30 cents Michael's) Paper Cutter Cricut Cutter - For Circles Craft Glue I took a large piece of poster board paper in red and measured against my bag then I folded it and used my paper cutter to cut it down into the nice square shape. I glued the red onto the top of the bag. I then took the large piece of poster board paper in black and measured out strips to go on the bag. I used the paper cutter to trim and make nice. I then glued the black onto the bottom of the red. I used my Cricut to cut out black circles in the 1 1/2" size. I then used the Cricut to cut out white circles in the 1" size. Using the craft glue I put the black circle down first and then white circle then on top. Bam Done, and I must say they turned out pretty darn cool! If you don't have a Cricut, first I suggest you buy one ... lol. But you can cut circles using a circle cutter or if you're talented you can hand cut them. Have a Great Day! Thanks for Stopping by! No need to grab your bug spray, we didn't invite the bugs. It's party day. Lou's camp out birthday party was this past weekend and we had a blast. Here's the invitations I showed last week: We put this on the door for all the campers as they arrived: Birthday Trail was to the right side of the house. They followed it to the party. We didn't want any lost campers. Lou loved the "Don't Feed the Bears Sign." He showed it to everybody. I made up the bunting by roughly sewing camping looking fabrics onto brown felt and then stitched those to the red and white twine that was pretty much everywhere. The trail led you right to his campsite. Welcome to Camp Luke. Hubby and I made the tent after seeing the one Ruby Ellen made at Cakies. It came together very quickly and was a perfect last minute make. The tepee was made by my super crafty friend Melissa. It was on my to-do list, but when she said it was available, I was all over it. The neighbors lost a tree a month ago or so (which landed on our fence) so we cut the stumps for the kids to sit on and has supplied us with plenty of firewood. I stuffed colored tissue paper for fire and the kids had a safe fire pit. These kids aren't even party guest. These are neighbor kids that saw the interesting things in the yard and came on over. Lou tested out all the stools and made sure they were level. I wanted to make sure the kids had plenty of time to just play, but also wanted one or two simple games. One was a fishin' hole. I threw a large piece of blue fabric over the pool deck and hid behind the water. I tied a clothes pin to the end of the line on lou's fishing pole. I was hiding on the other side to clip on some funny items. We had a sock, a diaper, a hat, toy snake, toy spider, etc. Then, after each child threw back that item, I clipped on a piece of candy. Some wanted to keep playing afterwards to keep getting the funny items. I had another parent take over then. Gotta delegate. I let Bee invite a guest, which was a great idea and I will remember to have the kids do that for other parties. Bee and her friend could participate when they wanted or go off and do some girl things if they wanted. Bee did not complain about not having anyone to play it. It was great. Plus this friend is a good buddy to Lou too. Memorial Day weekend ended up being a hard weekend to get our guests there, many were out of town or at their own cookouts. We ended up with a small but happy group of campers. It was a good mix of school and church friends. After the fishing game, it was time to eat. We had trail mix out. These tags were printed on some sticker paper that I bought at a garage sale last summer. We had sweet tea, bug juice (juicy juice fruit punch), and spring water. Gummy worms were out as bait. And sour bait of course. Hubby grilled hot dogs (Lou's favorite food). Lou also requested chips and dip, although I think Hubby prompted him. We had watermelon, campfire (baked) beans, and macaroni salad too. The tables were decorated with campish fabrics, burlap, acorns, pinecones and cuts of wood. Hubby even cut me some thin slices of large logs to use as 'platters.' It was really very hot and sunny, but not bad in the shade. I asked the parents to help carry the tables and chairs to the shaded pool deck. It was sort of gross eating by the unopend pool, but it was like eating by a pond. Tadpoles and all. After dinner, we had another game. We had an animal scavenger hunt. While we were eating, my sister hid stuffed animals around 'camp'. The kids had laminated cards and they crossed them off with dry erase marker when they found them. Here's raccoon hiding in the play house. The girls thought maybe they were supposed to gather them as they found them, but once we got that situated, the game went really well. I had only 4 copies of this sheet, but it worked out fine. The kiddos went around in groups of 2 or 3. When one group finished, they helped the other groups. I'll be keeping this game for school next year and maybe the nature center. While the kids were searching, the smore bar was set up. We were only working with two card tables, so we just switched food around as needed. This actually ended up working out well. The food didn't sit out in the heat too long and the chocolate couldn't have gone out any earlier or it would have been a mess. I had thought we would just smoosh the candle in a marshmallow, but it wasn't working. My sister and I Magiver-ed up a candle melted to a graham cracker. Nobody said anything about there not being cake. No one needed two desserts and smores were a given for a camp out. The kids cooked their marshmallows in our fire pit. Four seems to be an OK age to be able to responsibly cook their own marshmallow. None of the kids really needed help and they were all pretty good around the fire. Happy Birthday buddy! My sister was my photographer and when I loaded the pictures to my computer there were so many of this sweet guest's sister. Who can blame her! I have issues with opening gifts in front of groups. My issue. I put on the invitation 'Your presence is present enough' so no one would feel obligated to bring a gift. I've done this the past several years and it's about half and half then that do. Lou had every friend bring a gift, so I thought he should open them in front of the group. The kids love seeing what others give, so I guess I just need to get over my issue. There was plenty of time for playing after the food and games. The party was in the evening so I wanted to get all the 'stuff' done early so if people needed to leave to get to bed, they could feel free. We all actually ended up playing and chatting a good while. For favors, we sent home these flashlights. The tags read, "Thanks for making my day a bright one!" I made them in word and printed out on card stock. We also sent home these extra smore parts with a tag that said, "Enjoy smore at home." I shared them a few days ago too.
