History In Pictures - At exactly 5:12 am on April 18, 1906, one of the most significant earthquakes of all time struck San Francisco, California. Pictured above is the aftermath on Market Street, depicting some of the most horrific damages that were left behind. The estimated moment magnitude of the earthquake was 7.9, with a maximum Mercalli intensity of XI (which is incredibly extreme according to seismic intensity scales). - The earthquake ruptured approximately 296 miles of the San Andreas Fault to the triple junction at Cape Mendocino. The shocks were violent and lasted around 40-60 seconds, and were felt from southern Oregon to Los Angeles, and as far as central Nevada. - The earthquake spawned a large fire in San Francisco, which is known to be one of the tragedies that the public remember the most about. The damage caused by the violent shakes of the earthquake, however, was still equally as severe as the fire and did just as much damage to the fault. - According to reports, there were a total of 700 deaths both from the earthquake and fire combined, though apparently the number of deaths is commonly underestimated. Most of the fatalities happened in San Francisco, with 189 of them being reported elsewhere
