Be it a quality read or a quality watch that you fancy most, either way you probably heard of the "Out of Africa" book (by Danish author Isak Dinesen) or the same title Oscar-winning movie, starring Meryl Streep & Robert Redford, shot in Kenya. And if you have, chances are that one day you might also want to prove yourself indeed having set foot on the African soil. In Nairobi, you will find tons of artifacts to attest to that and just as many more to impress your dear ones back...

Do not use my patterns for commercial production! (i.e. to sell on etsy etc Nederlands onderin Loxodonta and her big brother Elephas are two happy elephants made of african flowers. The pattern includes photo’s and written instructions on how to make the flowers and how to join the flowers together to make your elephant. (note: the pattern is for 1 elephant, it’s up to you how many you want to make. The difference between Loxodonta and Elephas is due to different yarn weights). Meterage & sizes: The size of your elephant depends on the yarn you use. If you are unsure of the amount of yarn you will need, I’d advise you to make a flower hexagon, and weigh that after each round. Multiply the amounts by 39 as an estimate of what you will need for the finished elephant. Multiply the amount of the last round by 42 to account for the joining stitches. Use a crochet hook that is one size smaller than your yarn label advises, to make sure you don’t get big holes. As a guide Loxodonta is made using approximately 140 grams (435 m) of sport weight yarn. She is 20 cm high, 30 cm long, and 15 cm wide. Elephas is made using approximately 400 grams (660 m) of aran weight yarn. He is 28 cm high, 53 cm long, and 23 cm wide For the nerds among us: Loxodonta is the scientific name of the African Elephants (chosen because of the flower pattern name) and Elephas is the scientific name of the Asian Elephants (chosen because that shape is more similar).

I love rusks, but after you have made them a few times and realise how much sugar and fat go into them, you feel more and more guilty about eating them. I have experimented with many so called ‘healthy’ recipes and in my experience if you drop the fat content too much the rusks end up super hard. But I have successfully reduced the sugar in this recipe by 80% and added lots of fibre rich ingredients making it tummy friendly. And there is no compromise in flavour! The whole family will love them. Low sugar high fiber rusks 2 cups cake flour 2 cups nutty wheat or brown flour 2 cups bran flakes 2 cups desiccated coconut 1 cup oats ½ cup of toasted seeds (breakfast mix; omega mix; ultimate mix) 15 ml bicarbonate of soda 15 ml baking powder 15 ml cream of tarter 150g brown sugar 2tsp cinnamon 10ml vanilla essence 100g honey Non nutritive sweetner (the equivalent of 20 spoons of sugar) 5ml salt 400g butter, just melted 2 large eggs, beaten 800ml buttermilk Preheat the oven to 200˚C. Sift together all the flowers and add the remaining dry ingredients. Make a well in the centre and pour in the melted butter, honey, buttermilk and eggs. Mix to form a thick dough. Spread into a greased baking tin and bake until risen and golden brown, about 45 mins to an hour. Allow to cool completely before cutting into long thin pieces. You can speed up the cooling process by putting it into the fridge or freezer. Arrange spaced out on a baking tray or wire rack and dry out in the oven at 80˚C, for a couple of hours until crisp and dry. PS - if you want this recipe in a nice printable word format, please e-mail me at [email protected] and I will gladly mail it to you.
